The Portuguese: A Modern History, by Barry Hatton
Hattton has been a correspondent in Portugal since the 80s but did a wonderful job tracing portuguese culture and habits hundreds of years to realize that the national attitude pretty much remained the same. My favorite part was how passive the portuguese were during the Napoleonic invasions (spoiler alert: the royal family gave so few fucks that it immediately abandoned the country).
