This article was awesome. I thought it was going to be just about sex, but it was so much more. The author, Gay Talese, mentioned briefly that he is publishing a book based on his time and encounters with Gerald Foos (the innkeeper). It's coming out on July 12, and I pre-ordered it immediately after finishing the article. Here's a link to the book for those interested.
For people rightfully freaking out over the creepiness here, I hope you're heard about Gerald Foos and the Voyeur Motel.
> Talese disclosed that Foos was a long time voyeur of people staying in his hotel, having installed grilles in the ceiling of most of the rooms that enabled him to view his guests without their knowledge. Foos' observational focus was the sexual activities of those staying at the Manor House.
There's some significant controversy over alleged embellishment on the voyeur's part, though secret viewing areas in the motel definitely were constructed to allow full view of various motel rooms. There's a book out, and a Netflix documentary (which I need to watch), and also a lengthy New Yorker article.
First paragraph from the New Yorker article:
>I know a married man and father of two who bought a twenty-one-room motel near Denver many years ago in order to become its resident voyeur. With the assistance of his wife, he cut rectangular holes measuring six by fourteen inches in the ceilings of more than a dozen rooms. Then he covered the openings with louvred aluminum screens that looked like ventilation grilles but were actually observation vents that allowed him, while he knelt in the attic, to see his guests in the rooms below. He watched them for decades, while keeping an exhaustive written record of what he saw and heard. Never once, during all those years, was he caught.
Oh, and one of the kickers is that the writer of the article and book knew about this as it was ongoing for like 30 years and didn't tell anyone.
I suggest you read the Voyeur's Motel:
