You probably have a partial clog some distance down the drain line. It drains fast until it hits the clog, then starts backing up and draining slower.

Thrift drain cleaner works better than any product I've ever tried. Use about 1/4 to 1/2 of a bottle, poke it down the drain as best you can, and follow it up with about a quart of boiling hot water. Let it do its thing, then rinse it down with hot water from the tap for a minute or so after to make sure it's all washed away.

This is the stuff my local plumbing supply stocks and recommends. I used it once and it is kinda awesome.

It won't clear blockages--it's just for dissolving gunk that's already on there. And you need to use boiling hot water. And ideally you'd get that all into the system somewhere after a P-trap. You can physically clean the P-trap better than any chemical.

But the Thrift was interesting. You pour the dry pellets into the drain, then chase it with boiling water. Then you actually hear/smell a whole lotta action. Then 5-15 minutes later you rinse it with more boiling water and then really rinse it with regular hot water. Get all that crap all the way outta your house.

But at the end of the day, physical > chemical.

I just use this. Works great!
