>The one thing to remember with Java ferns, is that they require a regular fertilizer. Because they have no “true” roots, they get most of their fertilizer from the water column. If you want your Java fern to truly thrive, you should add a liquid fertilizer after every weekly water change. Tab fertilizers are useless with Java ferns, since they don’t have a proper root system to utilize them.

from here

>Java Fern should be placed on driftwood, rocks or directly onto the gravel (but make sure not to bury it in the substrate) that's why they don't need any fertilizer or root tabs
Any fertilizer design for aquarium won't hurt any live things however longest you using correct dose and maintain your regular water change..

Someone in that thread recommended Thrive. It seems normal, liquid aquarium fertilizer works, if necessary.

/r/aquariums would probably be more helpful with this specific plant. Hope this helps!

Also, nice plant. Didn't know these were a thing and they are super neat. Thanks!

Thanks! And yes, definitely some range in the terms.

The light is a Finnex Stingray, and I dose this excellent all-in-one fertilizer (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XK816RT/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) about once per week. I use R/O, so the combination of macros and micros in a little pump bottle is awesome. Aside from weekly ferts and a few ~10% water changes per month, the plants, shrimp, and HOB filter take care of just about everything. It's not too bad for a hobby that can easily soak up a lot of time and money!

I have sand substrate and use this fert. https://www.amazon.com/NilocG-Aquatics-Aquarium-Fertilizer-Specific/dp/B06XK816RT/ref=redir_mobile_desktop?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&ref=yo_pop_d_yo_pop_d_pd_t2

Thanks for all your input. I just wanna make sure I’m getting the best plants for my current setup. Recently bought some staurogyne repens and it didn’t work out, so I’m a little more selective now, haha.

U ever try this stuff? Says is completely shrimp safe...

NilocG Aquatics Aquarium Fertilizer Shrimp Specific | ThriveS All In One Liquid Fertilizer (500ml) https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B06XK816RT/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Q77XCbF3E9GGY

Oh surely its deficiency. I just wasnt sure how much of anything I should be adding before its over dose or how frequently I should be adding for it to work. under dose....over Dose...

my worry with Thrive is that it will increase levels and end up killing shrimp and possibly even fish.

This is the "shrimp safe" one which as i understand is just less SLAM DUNK nitrates. Even then I worry.

Do you use Thrive? Anyone you know use it with Shrimp? Fish fry and shrimplettes?

u/Terminal_MTS · 1 pointr/shrimptank

I wouldn’t risk it.

I use ThriveS, specifically made for shrimp
