There's a couple good books you can pick up to learn the basics. This was great for my last dog.
I think the best step is going to a dog training class with your dog. Having some guided supervision can be helpful, but make sure you go to a good class.
I would just pick up a book and follow that. Honestly all positive reinforcement methods will work it's all just about getting it all to work together. I'd take a look at Training the Best Dog Ever as it covers the a-z and goes week by week which makes it all a lot less overwhelming.
If that one doesn't tickle your fancy there are tons of others. I'd just pick one and go, the biggest thing is to just be consistent and positive.
