For the HVAC system I bought some foam board and made a box around it. Foam board was just held in place with some staples and alunimum tape around the corners. I left space around the unit to access it, change the filter etc. Worked great!

I used to carry all my Hordes stuff in one(very large army, well, for Hordes). And you can always add boxes onto the top of the rolling cart and strap them on. It's cheap, sturdy, and customisable. Just not very pretty :)
Elmer's 5mm (3/16in) foam board is my go-to. White is cheapest, but multiple colours are readily available. You can order large packs on Amazon, or get single sheets in pretty much any store that sells office supplies.
