I'd ask what other media your kids are into. That can be a big factor in what comics you'd be into.

The Comic Book Code is effectively dead these days. Though some companies have their own systems, they're fairly loose, so don't take them to literally.

You might try some of the "Ultimate" Marvel books, like Ultimate Spider-Man in particular. This book is really clean and no graphic violence.

Bone is a good all ages pick, and I truly mean all ages. Though the art style is reminiscent of Charles Shultz "Peanuts", the plot is more in common with Lord of the Rings. For $30 you get 1300 pages.

There's a nice book (single trade paperback) called "I Kill Giants" that you may want to give a read before you recommend (as it includes maybe one instance of strong language. It's about a girl who has imaginary battles with giants which represent a larger problem in her life she's unwilling to confront.

Some of the New 52 is age appropriate and some is not. I'd steer clear of Batman, which seems like an obvious pick. Though it's a fantastic read, it's too violent for you to take to school.

Here are some other good picks which aren't racy and don't have any violence above "saturday morning cartoon" level.

Don't be shy about ordering used copies off of Amazon.com or gohastings.com either.

The problem I tend to have with non-Marvel or DC comics is that their production values just aren't as high. I guess I'm spoiled by the artwork there (sexist though it may be). :) Really, I haven't been able to afford comics in years, though. When I did, I tended to just buy hardcovers (like this one), since I prefer to read the whole story all at once. I also tend to prefer the "decompressed" storylines that work best as graphic novels.

Anyway, my daughter, if that picture doesn't make it obvious enough, hasn't learned to read yet, so her interest is limited to cartoons and absurdly easy to play video games (like the Flash games on the Sesame Street site and the PBS Kids site). She's been running around in Super Hero Squad Online lately, which is based upon a cartoon she likes watching sometimes (which has an absurd level of Bioware-veteran and celebrity voice actors!), but even that's far above her skill level. Still, she enjoys running around the city as Ms. Marvel or Firestar, picking up stars and getting them hotdogs from the hotdog stand. :)

EDIT:

> The pre order bonus armor for femshep is really bulky and not form fitting which i LOVE for my vanguard

This one? I don't have it and I'd never seen the FemShep version. From a Google search, it looks like it's very similar to the multiplayer female solider/vanguard armor.

Amazon falls into this category as well.

I wound up with 1-9 of these at my doorstep. It was super awesome right up until my bank statement came and I realized it wasn't a gift.
