If you're intimidated by these brackets, there are several other types you could use. Some are made to be adjustable in depth, which requires the top bar to be a separate piece. That piece can be turned to the side when mounting.

There are also brackets that extend well above and below the rod itself, so the screw holes are more accessible.

Take a trip to Lowes or Home Depot and find a bracket you like better.

Also, as someone else posted, you don't need the plastic anchors if you're screwing into wood. If, however, you're screwing into drywall, be sure the anchors are strong enough for your needs. The anchors supplied with the brackets may not be sufficient if you're hanging very heavy curtains, or you have a cat (or child) that likes to climb.
