Just ask almost any semi-technical person or small PC repair shop to pull the drive and put it in a static control bag for you

after that it's just a matter of poking around.
I'm pretty sure that reader would use 12V and that adapter you sent would only supply 5V.

The WH16NS40 will do 4K as long as you roll back the firmware. If you wanna make the internal drive an external one of these would work. I use it to make internal HDDs external as well.

In the end, I decided to purchase a different product which works without issue on my Linux systems. Thus I conclude that the problem was in the hardware in some way. It could be the weak power supply for example, or something else.

External monitor would be the way to go. Beyond that, you could pull the HD and plug it into another computer. They make adapters which are cheap on amazon that allow you to plug drives into other computers via USB.

But make sure it is compatible with your drive before buying.
Remove the drive from your laptop and connect it via USB to a working computer. See if you're able to browse to your files.
