i have the optical drive on my desk since my case doesnt have a place for it
i have this drive with this sata to usb powered adapter, literally haven't had a problem with it for over 2 years now
keep in mind also that the original quality rips off the blu ray are going to be massive in file size, i'd very much recommend picking up an external HDD as well to store files if u plan on running something like plex, or go balls deep and build an entire server like i did
3x of these for $60 total, if you have the USB ports and power strip sockets for them: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GLL41MA/
Or 3x of these for $33 and add a 12V 6A power supply: https://www.amazon.com/Anker-SATA-Portable-Adapter-Supports/dp/B014OSN2VW/
Or if you don't mind plugging in drives as needed, just get 1.
Something like this...
https://www.amazon.com/Unitek-Adapter-Converter-Optical-Support/dp/B00GLL41MA/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1549732557&sr=8-5&keywords=usb+sata
They have some without power but they are for 2.5" drives. You will need one that has power. Or you could by a dock like this https://www.amazon.com/10Gbps-Single-Bay-Dock-SATA-HDDs/dp/B00XLAZTWA/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1549732639&sr=1-2-spons&keywords=usb+sata+dock&psc=1 or a new enclosure like this
https://www.amazon.com/ORICO-Toolfree-External-Enclosure-Support/dp/B00GAML7OK/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1549732670&sr=1-3&keywords=3.5+sata+enclosure
*the above links are examples, I am not saying these are the best quality or best price.
This is the sort of adapter that you'd be looking at if internal connection and external mounting isn't an option. I have no experience with that particular one, but it includes the requisite 12V power adapter, and its reviews seem good.
You could get something as simple as this to access the drives. https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-SATA-Drive-Adapter-Cable/dp/B00HJZJI84/
Edit: That adapter will only work for laptop drives. You will need something with more power for a 3.5" desktop hard drive. Something like this fore example https://www.amazon.com/UNITEK-Converter-Adapter-Cable-Drive/dp/B00GLL41MA/
Or if you want a more permanent solution you could get an enclosure. Which is basically the same thing but in a box. Just make sure you get the right size for your particular hard drive.
Edit: To answer your other question. I'm not really sure what you mean by "the Bookmark", but in theory everything should still be on the drives if you know where to look.
I just bought an adapter myself for same purpose. There’s cheaper ones out there, some cheaper ones use usb as power this has a dedicated supply
UNITEK USB 3.0 to SATA Converter Adapter Cable for 2.5 3.5 Inch Hard Drive Disk with 12V/2A Power Adapter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GLL41MA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_cJXgAb8TM20ZB
Google "UHD Friendly Blu-ray drive list".
Those the models you want. The cheapest one I know of is the LG WH16NS40:

Personally, I am not a fan of USB powered Blu-ray drives. They are so fuckin slow and expensive.
Get a SATA drive and a powered SATA to USB adaptor like this:
https://www.amazon.com/Unitek-Adapter-Converter-Optical-Support/dp/B00GLL41MA/
It is so much cheaper, faster, and more flexible.
There you go: https://www.amazon.com/UNITEK-Converter-Adapter-Cable-Drive/dp/B00GLL41MA/ref=sr_1_12?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1520961749&sr=1-12&keywords=sata+to+usb
Assuming it is a desktop you would need an adapter like this to connect it. Once connected it will appear just like a normal USB drive and files can be copied that way.
Try this one, it is similar to what I have been using for years. You then just need a USB-SATA cable, like this .
Wow remind me never to buy a Mac. This would be better since it can handle 3.5 drives as well.
