They might be a bit young but Paul Jennings has some great books for kids. Short stories like one where they have a spaghetti eating competition right when the main character finds a remote that works in real life, so the person who throws up their spaghetti then has the remote pointed at him and 'rewind' pressed. Or one where the boy can't stop saying 'without my pants' after every sentence. They made a tv series out of them when I was a kid, much loved Aussie books. Amazon link They're quick reads, but kinda gross and unusual and cool. My daughter was behind in her reading, and I found that when she was able to read a book easily she was more motivated and seemed to enjoy it more. She's been really into the goosebumps books. I've actually seen her reading without me telling her to, finally at age 11!
