Could use some kinda dodgy adapters to turn the WiFi card slot in the gaming machine into PCIe x1, good for close to 10Gbit but not quite, assuming BIOS actually lets it go into PCIe 3.0 mode.

There are some USB 3.0 to 5GBe dongles now, which would be compatible with some 10GBe devices on the other end, still a bit expensive though https://www.amazon.com/Type-C-5GbE-Adapter-QNA-UC5G1T-QNAP/dp/B07RKLQPLP

ive yet to figure out why they don't build like ANY nas that natively supports m.2 and 10gbe. That said, the 1019+ is clearly not MEANT to be that fast.

The 1019+ uses Celeron J3455 which only has 6 pcie 2.0 lanes and 2 6.0 sata connectors which means they are already using PCI lanes for a sata controller. I'd guess your cpu would choke out before your network connection got even close to saturated with 10GbE even if it wasn't bottlenecked by PCIe 2. The biggest problem though is that I'm not aware of a single 10GbE NIC uses less than 4 lanes and the ONLY one using 2.0 lanes is the old single port sfp+ E10G15-F1.

Now you can find 2.5G nics that only use 1 lane, but they are usually on 3.0, on 2.0 I'd bet they still can't get that fast and you aren't really gaining much over dual 1G for all that modding. The bigger problem is as far as I'm aware they all use aquantia chips and I don't think Synology includes those drivers in their distro, its mainly intel, Mellanox, marvel and their own brand stuff.

Before you go down that road, I would at least try enabling the experimental smb multichannel functionality and lacp (need it at both ends or 10gb on your computer) and I believe windows 10 or some other client that's using the latest versions of SMB. I'd be surprised if it even hit their claimed 225MB/s as that was likely done with SSDs or faster drives under ideal circumstances.

If you want 10gbe, you gotta move up at least 1 model to like DS1618+ or DS1819+ or even just get a DS1817 which already has the dual 10GbE built in and is. rated to speeds. that warrant 10GbE.

A more realistic option you could try (though might still have driver issues) would be one of these:

While the onboard port is usb-c, it includes a C to A cable so clearly that's not a blocker. I'm sure eventually Synology will release their own to compete. The cpu in the 1019+ DOES support usb 3.0 and while it might not max out 5gb or even 2.5gb, it's probably going to give you the most throughput possible with a 1019+ (if it works).
