maybe you can buy those caps that go over them and mod it, less risky route and cheap too. something like this? , maybe get the black ones and fill in the inner circles with white paint since they won't wear much if at all.

I haven't tested them myself, but an user on the nvidia forums reported that he got some of those and they fit perfectly on the thumbsticks if you remove the original rubber and place them over the plastic. Here's a link to the original thread on nvidia forums:
