Pretty darn accurate, just need to buy replacement batteries. Cut out holes (be very careful) in tin lids. Seal with aquarium silicon. I still haven't quite figured out an air tight seal though. I noticed some slight smell leakage. I will reseal them and hopefully that resolves it
I use these cheap hygrometers, which work fine once you calibrate them. (Note: hyg, not hyd -- that's something different, but related enough to be confusing.) There's probably not much difference between those and these cheap round ones besides the shape of the case.
To calibrate hydrometers, put a couple tablespoons of salt in a little glass bowl, splash just enough water on it to wet it (but not soak it), and then put that in an airtight container with hygrometers. After 8 hours or so, the air in the container will be at exactly 75% RH. The individual hygrometers will probably be slightly off 75%, but consistently so -- put labels on them that say "-2%", "+1%", etc. You could go through the process again to check them.
Burping the jars is about reintroducing oxygen during curing, not just releasing humidity. The bacteria breaking down the chlorophyll will switch to an anaerobic process once they've used up all the oxygen, and that releases ammonia -- it'll make the jars smell bad. You'll still need to burp jars periodically early on, even if you have Boveda/Integra packs managing moisture.
Congrats on your growing success and getting this far. Be sure you are looking at the trichs on the bud and not the leaves. Trichs on the leaves will start turning amber well before its "ready". Most will tell you its a personal preference as to when is perfect time to harvest. Ask your boyfriend what he means by "trippy". I read "strong" as leaning more towards couch-lock. 30% amber on buds would get you there. Good luck on the dry/cure. Get hygrometers to help on the learning curve.
