I have one of these aerators, and it does wonders for Scotch.

tl;dr version is that the aerator kind of smoothes out and evens out the proof, which is why I only use it every now and then for stronger drams.
Have you tried the spirit aerator? It opens bourbons up quite a bit without have to wait around 20-30 min
