I think he's exaggerating, but he also said external hdd, here's a 4tb for $135

>I have a suspicion the elements is a 2.5inch drive (laptop size) and not shuckable

Why?
I have evidence that it's actually a 3.5" drive.

Here's the amazon page for the 4TB Elements.

Here's the image of the back of the drive.

Here that image is, brightened.

That certainly looks like a 3.5" drive inside the enclosure. Everything lines up.
So what makes you think it's a 2.5" thrown into a 3.5" desktop enclosure with a power adapter? That seems unreasonable even without the pictures I've shown.

Just realized I missed the part that you already have a pi. In that case, get a couple of these, install openmediavault to your pi and put these in a raid 1. Once you have more money buy a third and keep a total backup on it, unplugged from everything in case of a disaster

Edit: also consider a pi4, the gigabit speeds and usb 3 support will make quite a difference

I have a Western Digital external hard drive similar to this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ODEGWN8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_G3MWCbMY5488S

It was easy to set up and I've had no complaints or issues with it.

Is this the hard drive you are referring to?

Looking at your budget I see Amazon has the elements on sale. A 4TB is under 100. You can shuck the element and install the HDD in your PC. If you had a few bucks over 100 the 6TB and 8TB are there too (109 and 139 I beleive).

Edit: you could also purchase this just to make a backup of your data leaving it as is as an external drive and in a month or 2 when you can afford another purchase it and shuck it for an internal hdd.

Edit2: if you are concerned about warranty then you do not want to shuck one of these as you void the warranty. However if you went the route of my first edit you could have all the data on that failing drive backed up externally and use that as a primary storage for that data set until you can afford to install a HDD. You really want to make sure you backup that drive that has smart errors quickly and this seems to be the fastest way within your budget to do it.
