Money is a tough one. Having it makes for a better life, but the point of diminishing returns happens sooner than most people think.

I'm reading a book now called What I Learned Losing a Million Dollars. A recurring theme when he talks about traders he knew is the high they all got from making money.

The other side of that was when they did end up in a losing position it killed them, sometimes literally. Chasing money for moneys sake is unhealthy.

If you have a reason for making money like "I want a comfortable life where I can pursue my hobbies and interests" then it's easier to see the money has a means to an end rather than an end in itself. I see that with my career oriented acquaintances.

Sometimes they talk about staying in just long enough to make their "fuck you" money^1 but the amount they think they need keeps changing as they get more and more of it.

before* you hang up the phone. It's a different amount for everyone.
