one of the best non-fiction books i've read abt feminist theology is "when god was a woman," it's a fantastic history of the emergence of patriarchal religions.

i also just bought "womanspirit rising" which has been on a reading list of mine for years—i've read some of carol p christ's essays and loved them, and am excited to read the book.

I think the issue is with the semi-divinity of saints, including Mary. In Catholicism it's expected that you pray to your patron saint in addition to God and Jesus. It's been theorized by some historiographers that the inclusion of saints, particularly Mary, as (essentially) demigods into the canon was a tactic used by the early Church to convert pagan Celts, Goths, Gauls, etc; the various saints corresponded neatly to the pagan gods of various concepts (animal husbandry, war, dinner, whatever), and Mary fit in with the idea of the loving, nurturing, eternally pure mother-earth-goddess. Made for more peaceful conversion through.... um.... reason instead of force. Of course, if that didn't work, force it was!

I think the Merlin Stone book, "When God Was a Woman," goes into detail about this theory.

And if you just wanna get plain weird this book by Merlin Stone can make you wonder about everything.

Like there was a war and the bad guys won. After they won they made great efforts to erase a previously existing religion and to date (10,000 years) have been very successful at suppressing the past from pretty much everyone.

Like when you hear Syria you should think Inanna, not ISIL. No one talks about the archaeological treasures that get reduced to rubble every time we invade a country with artifacts. The artifacts never make it and all i see in common is that traces of the old religion are being erased, very consistently, and of course no one in media talks about it.

But that's just me.
