I have a list by my home desk of things I can do:

  • Boost serotonin: reminisce about a fun trip or good time
  • Boost dopamine: create a bucket list or to do list
  • Boost testosterone: Starfish pose for two minutes
  • Boost oxytocin: cuddle for ten minutes
  • Boost endorphin: go on a walk

I like it because it's based on brain chemistry and they are easy to do and keep me from spiraling.

I also really liked this book Why Smart People Hurt and have really liked other things by this author. Specifically the parts about finding meaning and enjoying achievement because I feel like those are my main blocks to fulfillment.

Also this holiday I had a kind of break through for myself. It seems obvious but it really hit me hard. I was just relaxing and playing games on my tablet when I got the start of that "I'm not being productive" depression. Then I just thought to myself: I spend so much time being stressed, worrying, problem-solving, I work two jobs and have been in school, I'm going through a really tough period of my life--so what if I sit here and just don't be in stress for a bit? It really helped me put things in perspective and see another way to be kind to my mind and body.

EDIT: oxytocin. No, I'm not cuddling oxycontin.

On a similar theme there's a nice book on the problems of being smart, Why Smart People Hurt (<- that's an Amazon link - this subs' CSS hides links!), by Eric Maisel. Not being quite good enough for the intellectual problem(s) you've chosen to solve, problems with being understimulated, so you turn to drugs + alcohol. The book is quite unique, I haven't seen what it says anywhere else.
