I was mulling over a few ways to do it, trying to decide how much effort I wanted to put in. I really liked the idea of installing a rocker switch into the side so I decided to grab some material and assemble it from scratch for some soldering practice. It's the same idea as those prebuilt inline USB switches, it just disconnects the 5V+ and passes the other three straight through.

It's a little messy on the other side still, once I get my 3D printer I'll be containing everything in a box to adhere to the base. Here's a few pictures if anyone's curious how that looks. ๐Ÿ˜…

A couple of you asked for a guide so I whipped this up. It's a straight forward and cleaned up version of the hack job I did.

Keep in mind that there are manufactured USB disconnect switches out there if you're uncomfortable doing any of the following or want to take the easy route. Just make sure you grab one that supports data throughput like this one. It should work but I can't vouch for the build quality. If you don't mind getting your hands dirty keep reading.

TOOLS

  • Soldering iron + solder
  • Helping hands (Not necessary but uh.. handy)
  • Dremel + 15/16" 420 cut off disc (or smaller)* + wire wheel (to clean up edges)
  • Simple multimeter

*I used the 426 disc which didn't allow me to get into the corners very easy

    PARTS

  • SPST Rocker Switch (There are round versions out there that simply involve drilling and using a nut which can simplify the process. The guide assumes a rectangle switch is used. If you choose a different switch make sure it's at least rated for 5V, 1A.)
  • Solderable Breadboard
  • Female Right Angle USB A
  • Male Right Angle USB A
  • 20-24AWG stranded wire (I used a cut USB cable)

    GUIDE

This guide assumes you own a Playseat with the base metal thickness of 1/16". Modify it as you need to make it work for your seat.

  • Remove the two seat bolts and two cross member bolts from the side that you wish to install the disconnect. (You can leave it on but the metal dust/sparks will get everywhere, and having it removed will make soldering easier).
  • Find a spot to mount the rocker switch that won't get in the way of the plate's lip or seat bolts. Use a fine tip marker to trace out the switch. Keep it precise, you can always shave the edges if needed. Cover the metal around the sharpie'd area to protect the metal from debris. Cut the hole with the Dremel and install the switch.
  • Follow this diagram for the wiring and test for proper continuity. The white, green, and black wires in the middle span across the middle from the female to the male connector. You can also run a wire to bond the two USB shells together.
  • Mount the board and reinstall the plate. Almost anything you can do to mount the board will be better than my hack job, I'll leave that up to you. :P Just make sure you insulate it enough so that it doesn't short. I used a wrap of rubber tape with green over top.

That's it! I'll be sure to update this guide with my STL for a USB housing once I get a 3D printer, though that might take a month or so.

I'm thinking I may grab one of these, and solder a mini usb connector on it.
