For $5 more you can get a XPG GAMMIX 512GB S11 Pro from Amazon 99.99 -5 since its sold by ADATA should be no tax so works out to only $5 more.

I don't know a lot about SSD's but this one seems to be cheaper for the same speeds

[Here's a link to the Amazon listing you mentioned.]
(https://www.amazon.ca/XPG-GAMMIX-512GB-Gen3x4-AGAMMIXS11P-512GT-C/dp/B07KZXJTLN/ref=sr_1_8?keywords=SX8200&qid=1565098144&s=gateway&sr=8-8asd) Much better price. Thanks!

I'd like to note a better deal for $/GB, though: The SX 8200 is pretty much an identical drive for a great price- $150/TB. This is the Amazon listing.

I'd like to note this technical info from AnandTech. These two drives use the same controller and similar NAND. They're effectively the same drive, just the SX8200 is much denser for your money.

If you haven't even installed an OS yet then no nothing was written to the drive. Samsung drives have a "Samsung Tax" making the 970 EVO way overpriced for what you are getting since boot/game load times will be pretty much the same across many of the NVME SSDs out there. The Phison E12 based SSDs are one of the best price/performance ones out there and cost $60, $110, and $240 for 512GB, 1TB and 2TB in that order. The Intel 660p also would be a good option in for the 1-2TB drives since you will most likely benefit from storage size over pure speed and it costs $85 for 1TB and $180 for 2TB on sale. The XPG GAMMIX S11 Pro is also a good alternative to the E12 drives.

- There are a lot of option at 150$+, but at this point it is the Samsung. There is a also a ton of option near the 100$ price with different performance.

I recently got the GS65 Stealth Thin 8RE and installed the XPG Gammix S11 Pro 512GB SSD. For my day to day use, it is a very fast drive. I do recommend cloning your stock ssd to here to avoid some compatibility / boot issues.

u/SkyN3T24 · 1 pointr/hardwareswap

The ADATA XPG S11 Pro 512GB is a great performer, and better than the 970 EVO. I have one myself. I'd recommend it. Link

u/IVLEEEG · 1 pointr/hardwareswap

I have this, it performs like a 970 but is only $87 for 512GB, the 256 is only $50

> Also, from what I read those Ryzen 2xxx don't have an integrated GPU like the Intel choices... so that also add a bit to the costs.

Fair enough, I missed the lack of GPU.

> Any comments on the other component though?

For SSD, get the XPG GAMMIX S11 Pro for $120 and no tax. It's 512 GB, and only marginally slower than an 970 EVO - nothing noticeable. The only weakness of this drive compared to a 970 EVO is that it slows down more when full, so try to utilize say 90% of the space if possible. That's a $50 (and more depending on the GST/HST saved) savings with no noticeable performance decreases. Intel 660p (and Crucial P1) drives use QLC, which is a type of NAND memory that's denser, but slower as a result. They significantly slow down if doing any large writes, even more so if full, and have less endurance.

> I want reliable (for whatever reason I stayed away from Seagate, that might be irrational of course)

Seagate is very reliable - there was a batch of 3 TB
drives a while back with extremely high failure rates which might be the reason for your thinking. They fail equally or less than WD drives based on Backblaze's data so a swap to a 2 TB Barracuda will save another $45.

> For DDR4-3000+ speed, I see some model at 186$ for 32GB. Or 175$ for DDR4-2666 from G.Skill too. I really don't know if any of those will make any difference in practice and if it worth it to pick the cheapest to save another 40$. But that is a possibility.

I would go down to a cheaper DDR4-3000 CL16 kit. You won't notice much of a difference between 3000 and 3200, so this is an easy $30 savings.

Question, why would anyone get a SATA SSD over the below? The XPG Gammix S11 Pro is $90 with no tax which I think is a great deal? There are a lot of other NVME SSDs for the same price as the SATA SSD in question.
