The glass version weighs enough that the spring assembly is not necessary. In my cheap setup the grounds get stuck and essentially act as the filter. The legit version has an etched section of glass to capture the grounds. I'm surprised the little glass bung works, it was going to be a one time test before seeking out a Cona glass rod. Another pot this morning went perfectly.

Side note: I'm not saying I have actualized this myself, but it is my understanding that the cloth filter is absorbing some of the oils, which is detrimental to your brew. You should consider getting the mesh filter (if you're not keen on the glass rod idea): http://www.amazon.com/Yama-Reusable-Screen-filter-Assembly/dp/B00T3MT37C/?qid=1425310938
