One-bagging is easy if you're the kind of person who enjoys a basic, minimal wardrobe. If you're someone who likes tons of colors and patterns, it's definitely still possible, but can be a bit more challenging.

To one-bag successfully, you need clothing that's versatile, comfortable, easy to keep clean, doesn't wrinkle, and dries quickly.

  • Start with the basics: solid tees. Like practically everyone else on this sub, I love merino wool. I pack a few dark, solid merino shirts for every trip, usually from Ibex or Icebreaker. Add some packable bottoms. (For business travel, I like Eddie Bauer's Travex. For everything else, Prana.)

  • Add some accessories. If bright colours and patterns are your thing, pack a few scarves, and you can change your look with minimal effort. Properly tied, a scarf could be a belt, a vest, or an undershirt. Also, ditch heels for something like Yosi Samras or Tieks. They're more comfortable and pack down well, and there are tons of colors and patterns available.

  • Look into convertible clothing. Encircled and Angelrox both make amazing travel-friendly items that can morph from shirt to skirt to scarf with a few snaps or ties. Especially recommended are the Chrysalis Cardi from Encircled and The Wrap from Angelrox.

  • Pick up some travel-ready underwear. Exofficio is amazing, and goes on sale at Amazon pretty frequently. Just get a few pairs as and when you can. (It's also worth investing in a pair of Thinx.)

  • Start looking for solid toiletries to minimize what you need in your 3-1-1 bag. I use salt deodorant, since it's better for merino, solid shampoo and toothpaste, and bar soap. For skincare products, I like Lush's Full of Grace and Coalface, and a use a face scrubber Sephora. I picked up GoTubbs to store the shampoo and Lush bars, and Nalgene travel bottles for any liquids. If there's a product you like, buy a big bottle and top off your travel bottles before your trip.

  • Find a bag you love. (There are a million opinions on the perfect bag on this sub, but my choice is always Tom Bihn.) You'll need to decide on roller vs duffle/backpack, and figure out what size works for you. I would say you absolutely don't want anything bigger than 40 liters. Bigger than that, and you start overpacking. I use a 16 or 26L bag, no matter how long I'm traveling for.

  • Get the packing cubes! Just do it! Everyone tries to skip this part, and eventually they see the light. Packing cubes contain and compress your clothes, and let you corral smaller items like non-liquid toiletries and electronics. Personally, I like Eagle Creek Specter in the Compression and Clean/Dirty flavors. If I could have just one thing from this list, it would be packing cubes.

I'll break down my list and add some photos in another comment. Good luck!
