I was going to buy one of the more expensive branded foam mattresses, but my back went out and we needed a new bed now. We bought a cheap queen size this one on Amazon for less than $300. It's been almost 5 years and the bed is still wonderful.
My back just started acting up again, but it appears to be a pinched nerve this time. Pretty sure the bed isn't at fault.
we just got a guest bed mattress from Amazon. Queen size, memory foam - $250 including tax. It's not quite as good as our super-fancy mattress (that we overpaid for), but it's way better than an air bed!
We have prime, so it came in about 2 days.

Second buying one on Amazon! Didn't think I liked memory foam either but I stand corrected. We got this one, basically a knockoff Casper: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00Q7EPFT4?psc=1&ref=yo_pop_mb_pd_title&th=1 .. pretty sure mattress stores are exclusively for money laundering.

For a bit more you could go with this and this. We have both in queen size and we love them. Even ended up getting our kid the twin size ones.
