Single Joy-Con ones seem pretty universally called grips, too. A strap I would take to indicate the string section, which some of these grips have and others don't.

They should be charging when the system is docked.
If they arent, then something may be wrong.
You could try a charging grip, which should keep them charged off of the system.
Or something like a Nyko charging block which should keep them charged when not attached to anything.
Have you updated them to the latest firmware?
