As others have suggested, our wiki has a lot of good info, but here are a few other suggestions. The best thing you can do is watch the Jackets broadcast of their games. The commentators give little tidbits of history and trivia and great insight into the skills and backstory of the players. If you want to get DEEP into the history, pick up the book The Chill Factor by David Paitson and Craig Merz. This goes a little bit into the short history of professional hockey in Columbus, and how a popular ECHL team paved the way for an NHL franchise and arena (and the intricate and complicated relationship with OSU). But don't feel like you need to be a hardcore fan. Take advantage of Student Rush tickets, see a handful of games, watch a bunch on TV, and just enjoy the game of hockey. We have such a short history that even if you just hopped on this season and didn't care much about the past, you would only be missing a handful of things.
edit: also, Bob McElligott's radio broadcasts accomplish the same thing as the TV broadcasts just audibly instead of visually. Commonly on 97.1 The Fan, or CD 102.5 if there is a conflict.
I read this book for general hockey info - it is beyond fantastic as a primer for all parts of the game https://www.amazon.com/Take-Your-Eye-Off-Puck/dp/1629371203/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1520231712&sr=8-1&keywords=take+your+eye+off+the+puck
Then you can read this one if you want to go deeper in the game mechanics - yes it is about advanced stats, but it really helps you understand the way the game works as they go through how these are effective: https://www.amazon.com/Hockey-Abstract-Presents-Stat-Shot/dp/177041309X/ref=pd_bxgy_14_img_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=177041309X&pd_rd_r=95WZ602VZZPEVN4HHYXW&pd_rd_w=W2ZUk&pd_rd_wg=F2J4k&psc=1&refRID=95WZ602VZZPEVN4HHYXW
These two are great books about the sport.
I was a baseball fan first and foremost too.
I love hockey because while it has the most action of any sport, it also has all the tradition of a revered national pastime like Baseball (just for our neighboring country). The history is incredibly rich and the cup is more sacred than any other trophy in North American sports.
As a beginner I soaked up a great book:
Hockey for Dummies - Written by our team president John Davidson!
http://www.amazon.com/Hockey-For-Dummies-John-Davidson/dp/0764552287
Don't be turned off by the "For Dummies." It's a quick read but goes over rules, strategies and history and can catch you up pretty quick.
Stanley makes a nice one. Check it out on Amazon. I like that it is easy to clean and fill.

Looks like Amazon.ca has them in stock http://www.amazon.ca/Columbus-Jackets-Reebok-Premier-Alternate/dp/B004C94TH0/ref=sr_1_sc_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1418402893&sr=8-2-spell&keywords=columbus+bluejackets+alternate+jersey
I would say your next best bet would be to call one of the FSN Ohio Blue Line stores, explain your situation and see if they could help you out. http://bluejackets.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=48204
These plastic bag flasks are awesome for more than just hockey games. And yeah, never had a problem.
