I recently helped a family member of mine extract one of his first successful grows and thought I’d share the process and pics with my fellow cannabis extractors.
My cousin has been open blasting to make his extractions but last month I finally convinced him to invest in a closed loop system like mine. He went with a Terpp Extractor and I set it up for him outside : http://i.imgur.com/J8ii0ln.jpg
We used a mixture of propane and n-butane, I like using a mix with some propane because it extracts better than pure n-butane in my experience.
First step: Get all the nugs off the plants. Here’s one of the plants: http://i.imgur.com/oLwtWBP.jpg
Second step: FREEZE the nugs, fresh off the plant. We used dry ice in a cooler for about 30 hours. Pic of the nugs : http://i.imgur.com/OWOSaX4.jpg
Third step: Pack column nice and tight with frozen buds and run the solvent through the system. Collect the oil when it’s ready (I like to gently scrape onto pyrex dish or PTFE sheets, try not to agitate it too much).
Fourth step: Put it on the heat. My friend uses this vacuum set up. It gets the job done. I like my vac oven because it provides heat in all directions, but I used a set up similar to this for a very long time, it’s a great budget way to purge your extracts.
This is the heating pad we use underneath the chamber. It stays at a fairly consistent temperature, we kept the heat at 95 degrees, bumping it up to 100 near the end.
Fifth step: Once the oil is melty and in a nice patty, put it at full vac and keep it on the heat for however long it needs. This is tricky, some strains are done in 24-30 hours. Some strains require a full 48 hours. I’ve gone even longer when there is a lot of moisture from fresh frozen or live resin runs. The reason it takes so long is because we are using very low temp’s to preserve the flavor and color of the oil.
At around 10 hours in I will “flip” the patty of oil, like a pancake. I’ll put a ptfe sheet on the top of the oil, flip it upside down, and continue purging on low heat at full vac, Flipping the patty will get the solvent out faster and more effectively.
Keep doing it every 10 hours or so until your oil is done.
This Durban Poison was in the chamber for 50 hours.
annnnnnnd boom : http://i.imgur.com/RmE8XAw.jpg
62 grams of fresh frozen nugs turned into 14 grams of fresh frozen oil.
As you can see, it stayed very sappy. Not very stable, but this happens a lot when dealing with fresh frozen or live resin oil. Maybe due to moisture or other factors like strain.
The taste is incredible, I’m a big big fan of Durban Poison. Very distinct flavor, super fruity and sweet. The effects are an amazing clear headed, sativa high. Good for day time smoking.
If you have any questions feel free to ask! I’ve helped a bunch of people here find and set up closed loop systems and with purging advice, I don’t mind PM’s at all :)
Thanks for the gold!
Just for that, here's a more detailed, complete list of what is needed to micron filter smaller amounts (1l solution), with links to the cheapest good option on amazon:
Vacuum flask - http://amzn.com/B005QDP1XC - This is just a flask with a tap for a line from a vacuum source.
Hand vacuum pump - http://amzn.com/B00657XV4O - This creates a vacuum, also is handy (lol!) when finishing extracts. Just take the tube from the end and stick it on the male port on the side of the vacuum flask. If you already have a brake caliper vacuum pump or electric pump those can be subbed for this.
Buchner funnel - http://amzn.com/B00BHLE6MO - a funnel, with a space for filter paper
Rubber collar - http://amzn.com/B0018S0WBK - forms a seal between the buchner funnel and the flask. Wet your finger and around both sides of the collar, place the collar on the flask, and the funnel on the collar, and firmly press them together. This will ensure a good seal.
Medium flow rate filter paper - http://amzn.com/B00YM3R7KW - and slow filter rate filter paper - http://amzn.com/B006T5AY24 - Medium is good enough for most, and takes less time to filter, but the slow will yield the highest quality. The slow filter paper link has multiple options, be sure to select "1.5 micrometer pore, 11cm diameter" to get the right size/type.
Once it's all assembled, just pour the extract/herb solution (slowly) into the funnel, while pumping away at the vacuum pump. The vacuum will keep things flowing and you'll be done sooner than if you just let it drip through a coffee filter.
Bonus tek - to make a vacuum chamber to polish your extract:
Take a small mason jar and make a hole in the lid, big enough for the tubing from the hand pump. Take a bit of that tubing, or similar from home depot etc, and hot glue it so that it goes through the lid and into the mason jar. Really lay on the hot glue until its gobbed up all around the hole, sealing it well. Let it cool. You can now place your extract on a small bit of parchment, place it in the jar, seal the lid, and hook the pump up to the tubing. When you pump and create a vacuum (as high as this model will go, just keep pumping until the gauge registers no change), microbubbles of solvent and air will foam up to the surface, smoothening and polishing your extract. Its not a necessity like it is with BHO etc, but it's still nice to do. I even do it to some of my rosin batches as it can help them budder up.
Butane torches, I've loved my Newport (it comes in other colors if gold isn't your thing). My guy has one of those and a Blazer Big Shot which is nice as well. Both have stood the test of time. The Newport you can operate with one hand, the Big Shot is possible to operate with one hand but slightly more difficult. I ordered a 6-pack of Newport butane with my torch and it's performed wonderfully. A cheap Bernzomatic torch from Home Depot will conk out on you, so just factor that in to whether you want to make another trip to pick up a new torch in 6 months, or buy a slightly more expensive one that'll last twice as long if not longer.
If you're going the propane route and have a TI nail, just make sure you don't overheat your nail. Titanium reacts with oxygen when it reaches a certain temperature, creating titanium oxide (the white coating you see on some TI nails) and titanium dioxide dust, which you can inhale and is definitely not good for you. You can reach this temp with butane or propane, but because propane burns about 1000 degrees (F) hotter than butane, you can reach that temp much easier. Those big blue propane tanks at Home Depot run about $5 though, if you're looking for a cheap and efficient route.
If you want accuracy and your trying to improve your return then you need to up your game. Depending on the product of your plates you can be sitting around 150 or 140 in reality where the plates touch.
So really grab a simple reader; and some K Type Thermocouples (if your going to make edibles these are priceless anywho) i'll link some off of Amazon that I got that work very good.
For example. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0083SZC6S/
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005GFHYA8
You don't need to ice bath them before usage likely; for usage just put them between the plates and that's your answer. As you get 2 of them you can put one on the top and one on the bottom plate.
Rosin tech is pretty amazing i've had some regular rosin rosin and then crumble and some Bubble Hash Rosin (which was quite frankly amazing Sour Diesel)
Wish I saw more Rosin in the stores lately; so much Hydrocarbon and Distillate (not that they are bad) (nor is distillate an extraction process itself)
Intro
Hey guys! I decided to write this guide because someone suggested I do it. Plus I see a lot of people asking how this stuff is produced and asking for tips and tricks, so I decided to write out all the knowledge I have that I can think of. This should be considered a guide on how to start from scratch, so if you have your own setup that works well you probably won't really learn anything new from this.
Secondly, remember that this is as much an art as it is a science, just like cooking. There are certain scientific principles we apply to get a better product, but in the end a good end result can come in multiple ways and is also all relative. Don't be discouraged by your mistakes and don't think your way or even this way is the only right one.
So without further ado, here's my guide for how to make BHO sap or shatter, mostly focusing on how to do it without a vacuum pump and desiccator.
What you will need
The great part is that a lot of this stuff can be got at bed bath and beyond. That would be my first stop.
*Out of interest of presenting all the facts, some people swear by concentrate pads. They're unnecessary though. Parchment is better in my opinion and you should get used to using it because it's much better for heat transfer in a vac. That's my opinion though, people vac with slick pads and slick sheets all the time.
The reason I put this as an addition to the razor blade/paint scraper section is that it's actually an alternative to using those, because you can blast right onto it. But again, heat transfer. you're going to get more temp variation here because you'll have to go a little higher than you would normally because the pad absorbs heat.
General concerns
I think overwhelmingly the biggest things people are worried about when it comes to butane is its explosion risk, which is considerable. This is why you should NEVER blast butane indoors. It only takes a presence of 2% butane in the air for it to be a considerable explosion risk, and it will pool on the floor being lighter than air. So beware of lighters, running motors, electronic anything, some people even say cotton.
Generally though we do not purge butane because of health risk. We purge for a different reason entirely: taste and quality. Butane is not very toxic at all, so there is no reason to fear the very minor amount of it found in even poorly purged hash oil. The vast majority of our process is not spent taking out large amounts of solvent, but residual amounts.
Process
Vacuum
Many people believe that it is absolutely necessary to have a vacuum pump. This is not necessarily true; it simply expedites the process of purging. Think of the purging process as “revealing” the flavor of your oil rather than explicitly improving it somehow. There are a set amount of molecules inside the resin. When you degas it, you are degassing butane and terpenes both.
You can test this is two ways. Weigh out the patty before you put it in the desiccator or degassing chamber. At the end of your purging you will notice about a 5-8% reduction in the weight of your oil. Second, when you open up your desiccator after degassing, you will be met with the stink of evaporated terpenes (since it smells like the bud that you ran). I cannot be sure, but I believe this proves that you are evaporating out terps at a steady rate in the vac.
This is all speculation, and seems like an obtuse way to look at the vac part of purging, but you can’t discount the fact that there is a set amount of cannaboids in your oil, and only a set amount of terpenes, so if they are evaporating at a higher rate, then you should want to expose your oil to less vaccing rather than making it the primary part of your process.
What I advocate is using your desiccator to purge out the residual solvent, not to take a shortcut with your oil. If that’s what you’re looking for, you can use it like that, but it will lead to more auto-buddering, less flavorful oil, and most importantly your process and philosophy will always be the number one factor in quality. Meaning if you want to take shortcuts all the time, you’re going to end up with poor or lesser quality oil and probably not know why.
What you want out of a vac is simple. As close to 50 micron rating or lower, two stage pump. CFM is not necessarily important, because of the tubing that tends to be used for most vac pump-desiccator setups. A desiccator may be glass, plastic, or stainless steel, however make sure you get it from a reputable source. No mason jar desiccators, that’s one way to get an implosion. Another is if you apply heat to the outside of your desiccator, especially when using plastic or glass (although steel still has a significant implosion risk).
The way I apply heat is by using preheated ceramic tiles underneath my oil, and heating it up with the heat gun on the lowest setting right before I turn on the vacuum. If you do not apply heat you are not purging!
i have made 16 batches of THC ecig stuff using alcohol, PG and PEG-400. i was going to wait longer to see how long it holds, but i'll share my initial results (because every batch ive made has had some problems down the line. i wanted to wait and see if this one stayed homogenized. the commercial opens i bought months ago are easily 6 months old, and still perfect):
when i heated it to let the shatter and PG mix faster, they always came apart weeks later. my best batch took 5 weeks to de-homogenize. my latest batch, room temperature. just setting 1g of shatter into 1g of PG and letting it sit. it's been 4 days now and it's looking very good. still some solid white chunks, plant waxes im sure. i used a very low quality shatter, i doubt it had been winterized.
i really wish i could find a place i could get PEG-400 that didnt taste bad. i got some from texlabsupply and it has a heavy plastic taste to it, can't use.
now, if you really want to step up your game, you'll try to replicate tetra labs gold oil. they add d-lemonine to it after they mix it up, 5% by volume. i think most THC ecigs are 1 part shatter to 1 part solvent (PG or PEG). so i was going to mix up a "pre-mix" for THC ecig use which was 10% d-lemonine. that way i can just squirt out 1ml into a bho container, and let it sit.
http://www.amazon.com/Blubonic-Industries-d-Limonene-Solvent-Dlimonene/dp/B009SSGW48/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1410549287&sr=8-5&keywords=d+limonene
i might go with a smaller quantity. if i used all of it up, it would denote i bought and consumed over 1 kilo of shatter. that would be a long fucking time.
edit: for the commercially bought thc ecig pens, indica ones always had a berry flavor to them. does anyone know what that might be? because i think d-limonene is some of the good flavors in some strains. if i could buy some and mix it in to add to the flavor? i thought i might be able to do this with just essential oils, but that does not sound like the case.
I purchased mine from the link below, you can build whatever syringe you want. (Highly, highly recommend at least 30ml or 50ml.) I have a glass-on-glass 30ml syringe with a metal luer lock.
http://www.zorotools.com/g/Glass%20Syringe%20Reusable/00141141/
And I get a 10 pack of filters from here:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005T45FZM/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
And you have it backwards! Here is how I use this syringe: Pull the plunger out, screw on a filter (skipping this = oil falls right out the bottom), pour from the measuring cup into the top of the syringe until it matches the 30ml line, then place the plunger back in, and begin applying pressure to pass the oil through the filter at the bottom. It is slow going considering I usually run batches of 200-300ml, but I cannot say it doesn't give GREAT results. It is a bit of an investment initially, but I only use one filter per batch, and the syringe is still working great after 5 or so batches, so I'd say it's a damn good one if you like pretty extracts.
Hello, r/CannabisExtracts! Visitor from r/microgrowery here. I'm wondering if you experts can help me dial in my blasting technique. Here's what I did:
How did I do? I haven't tried it yet, but it smells pretty strongly of chlorophyll. I'm afraid that this will be suitable for making edibles, but not so good for dabbing. Please give me your constructive criticism. Thanks, fam!
https://www.amazon.com/Industrial-Liters-Digital-Ultrasonic-Cleaner/dp/B01NCJ0N6O/
bought this so i could put my rig, bong down stems, and to make sure all my pipes fit in it. smaller ones are like $30 but are only good for little bowls or bangers, not whole pieces.
just put the dirty glass in a ziploc with hot water, put in the unit and press a button or two. i had an old pipe that was just filthy and 8 minutes left me with a bag of murky brown water and a pipe that rinsed out pretty much crystal clear in the tap afterwards.
For things that don't readily come off with alcohol and/or water.
These:
Alconox Powder Labware Detergent, 4 lbs Box https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FGDEP1Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_buPwCbCFF6J2R
100% Orange Oil d-Limonene HIGH PURITY Food Grade, Solvent, Medicinal, Cleaner, Degreaser, Limonene (32 fl oz) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009SSGW48/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_WuPwCb3DKT2R4
And/or an ultrasonic bath are what we use in our lab.
To clarify we do not specifically mix alconox and limonene. Not saying it will be toxic or have a violent reaction if the 2 mix, but typically we try not to mix solvents.
For stubborn stuff the ultrasonic bath works great.
I would avoid using salt as it can scratch the glass and if you are using tap water it's a good idea to rinse with ethanol or isopropyl afterwards to prevent hard water stains and to help it dry thoroughly.
If you can't decide which to try first go with the limonene. If it's still really stuck you'll probably be best to invest in a ultrasonic bath.

This stuff is truly amazing. I have used Isopropyl + salt, the 420 cleaner and many others. This stuff can't be beat. Just make sure to rinse with a small amount of iso to remove the chemicals afterwards.
If it's mostly for personal use and you might upgrade in the future to something bigger like a full oven vac ($1000-$3000+). Then it might be worth considering something cheaper
https://www.amazon.com/ABLAZE-Gallon-Stainless-Degassing-Chamber/dp/B071KZXVRR/
Could then save for a bigger system and still get at least a few good runs out of something cheaper. BVV are overpriced in my opinion
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B012CFTYX4/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_CB2IwbH651W8M. This is all you need in a vacuum. I've been working on both a bestvalue and a provac recently. Hands down the best value has an easier seal to deal with than the provac. The vacuum listed links an adapter. You might need this depending on the hosing you use

Eisco Labs Polypropylene Buchner Funnel, 13cm, Designed for 11cm Filter Paper https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BHLE6MO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_agAExb2YAPW8P
^^ a funnel like that? Then I use filters? Right now it's sitting in a glass container in the freezer, hopefully I used the right ratio of everclear to wax, lol.
Something like this would be a better option. Though it is about 3 times as expensive. I wouldn't go cheap on your pump though. You'll end up wanting a better one later.
You could try soaking it in something like PBW but I would bet that in order to get that off you would end up removing the top layer of the dish. If you don't mind that then you could use some soap plus some steel wool but honestly it's never going to be the same.
I would use the CBD along with 1/8th teaspoon DGL powder twice a day. This will heal any stomach with bad reflux in a few days. It tastes like concentrated root beer or licorice but it is the best herbal medicine I ever tried.

Newport Zero. I love it, but the tank is small so it runs out fast. However, I like having a small torch and can't get a bigger tank unless I want a bigger torch, so I'm cool with how it is. Amazon
Worrd thanks for the info bro, now I'm considering getting a chamber too just to be safe. What you think bout this?

I wouldn't worry, it'll just be wax, not shatter. As long as you ensure that you get your solvents out.
A ball valve between your filter and your vacuum flask will allow you to jerry-rig a vacuum evaporation chamber, allowing you to filter your fats, and then purge your goods in one step (though getting it out might be tricky)
There are some relatively cheap options for at-home filtration of winterized solutions these days.
Just a filter-flask with a nice fritted glass filter funnel (you'd have to buy a vacuum-hand pump separately for like $20)

Or an all-inclusive kit (though it uses a buchner and paper filter system)

This isn't the best way to filter, but it is a cheap way for at home small scale use.
Would this work?
I am interested as well.

/u/herrschnaufer is correct - freeze everything: iso, bud and any jars that will be used for the extraction. The reason for this is to lock water solubles to the plant. I freeze for 24 hours in a deep freezer. The other plus to this is that you can do multiple washes and if done timely enough, your product will still be amber.
Use 99% Isopropyl Alcohol. The 8% extra water content in 91% will mean you need to purge longer and will strip water-solubles faster than desired.
Use the finest filter(s) you can. I am planning on using one of these for my next run : 0.2um syringe filter
Here's my latest run, first wash and second both made from Mr. Nice Guy buds. The second run was intentionally turned from shatter to wax.
I dont think the can tapper would function properly with that ball valve. I think you need one like this
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0014JC9HI/ref=oh_details_o07_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
That adapter should work I think but I got this one and make sure you remove the internals that are not needed in our application and would reduce the flow of tane
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0056ODEP8/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
And this is my can tapper
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009XT7NY/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
When you use a can tapper correctly the puncture point is at the bottom corner of the can so all of the butane can flow out as a liquid. Since the flow rate is increased the pressure inside the tube also increases and with my setup running two can tappers I increase the pressure even more.
Also plan on pairing the pvac chamber with http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001P7C7QM/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1395938434&sr=8-2&pi=SX200_QL40
Can I get anything better without upgrading to a vac oven?
Or is the pvac and this pump pretty high quality
