I would go more neutral, beige, brown. Size looks like you need bigger thinking 8 x 10. Measure and use the 3D app. I think 5 x 7 might be too small. The 3D thing helps give you an idea. From what I’m seeing is the brown couch, some red orange, some red. If you throw that into a rug it could get overly busy unless you find something you love. It needs to be big enough. Safavieh Hudson Shag Collection SGH280A Ivory and Grey Moroccan Ogee Plush Area Rug (8' x 10') https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00PP4RJ6E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_zvJVDb8XCJHS4 ok so here’s what to think about. What length of rug do you want? Plush, Berber, thin and hand woven? How do you clean it? This matters because longer may not let a room a work. Kids? Stains? Pets? I like shag but didn’t buy shag. Why? I’ve got a cat that rarely gets sick. Cleaning that out of shag sounded horrible. Think about stains. So if you tend to spill things and stain things don’t go really light. The lightest I go is ivory. Really Dark can make the room look smaller but if your choice is dark or stains go dark. Amazon and Wayfair (they seem a bit higher than amazon) have 3D view or virtual view. Use that to at least see how rugs look in the room. It gives you an idea especially if you’re going out of your comfort zone. Something like this is lower pile. Unique Loom Autumn Collection Checkered Abstract Casual Warm Toned Multi Area Rug (9' 0 x 12' 0) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01NCI6TR4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_kFJVDbB905ND1 it looks like you tend to stay with warmer colors. A cool colored rug would be tricky. I would stay warm. If you change colors often don’t pick a rug to match the room just go neutral. Sculpted rugs have designs cut into the carpet. Large sculpted usually look nice, smaller not so much. Certain sculpted look tacky. In general I would say yes to something like this. While there may be some guides as far as what to avoid like a tiny rug. It needs to be functional, your style (picking something that you don’t hate is different than you love, you’re spending good cash get you love), something you can vacuum. It’s going to be big enough taking it outside and shaking it is insane. Some prefer safe. Safe would be lighter brown or neutral like the following.

Just some links and suggestions to help you narrow it down. If you buy non prime from amazon you can message them to clarify if they charge return shipping if it doesn’t work for you. At 150 and over price tags some will offer it if you ask.

This picture is sexy. I love the hanging plant. As many have said, contact paper over the cabinets would be super easy here since they are so flat. Just take off the hardware and replace it. Is it gold hardware? I like it.

Instead of wallpaper I would do some removable adhesive tiles, like this or something with slightly more color or contract.

Relaminate the counter tops if you have the time, money, and skillset. Or hire a professional. If you do that, maybe leave the cabinets white. They are kinda nice looking.

I've been eyeballing things on Wayfair for a while but haven't bought anything yet. Have you been happy with the furniture you've got from them?

Do you like the Asian-influenced items? You could have a mandala or lotus tapestry draped across the couch(or chair when you get it). https://society6.com/product/flower-of-life-batik_tapestry?sku=s6-6718942p42a55v412

I had another idea, but it's because I'm a cat person (so not really design-related at all). You could get a large cat tree :) https://www.amazon.com/Modern-Design-Furniture-Climbing-Scratching/dp/B07R4Q8YWN

such an inviting space :)

I agree with downsizing the bed - it definitely dominates your long skinny room. We actually replaced a newish expensive posturpedic with this reasonably priced mattress and couldn't be happier. You don't need a boxspring.

You can also get wallpaper to mimic that feature wall:

If I were you, I'd splurge on lighting (task light for reading, mood lighting, etc) and getting a nice dock and speaker set up for your phone / music. Be sure to include artwork that is important to you, and bedding that you love.

Ditch that dark corner shelf and get some nice over-toilet storage (one | two) that you can organize with baskets, bins, folded towels, etc. Weed out any bath products you're not using.

Replace the curtains with something more modern and light (one | two)! You could even just put some privacy film over the window so you don't lose any light. Add a hanging plant or lantern (to warm up the lighting) to the corner above the toilet, and a tall laundry basket or wastebasket next to the sink.

As others have mentioned, a rug is a great idea - they also make ones that fit around toilets (one | two).

This rug would look great! It’s lighter so it will be pretty neutral other than brightening up the space.

I love all these tips.

Accent Wall: Would you suggest a lighter or darker color for the accent wall? Would a light or a dark blue work well? Or is it too difficult to say? The master bedroom is painted a lighter color blue and it works well with those floors.

Bar Cart: Something like this? https://www.amazon.com/Baxton-Studio-Lancashire-Metal-Kitchen/dp/B00VMIERSU/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=buffet+cart&qid=1565634770&s=gateway&sr=8-2#customerReviews

Chairs: Going to keep what I have there. I like the industrial look of them. Which means I'll need to update the lighting fixture that I have there.

Oh! I like this idea. But I love day beds.

Darker cover, throw blanket, and some pillow covers. I’ve bought these and I’m happy with them

Thank you so very much for taking the time to write all this out. Proved to be very helpful. Ended up going with this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VSQZ2BK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_13XVDb9761FHB

Excited to see how it looks! Thanks so much!

I also have a long narrow bedroom (sort of similar), so I mounted my tv and also turned my entertainment center into a floater. Im gonna link you to the tv stand I have so you can check it out but with the colors I think I see, sorry its hard to tell, it looks like it would also go well in your living space

It's very sleek and hardly in the way taking up minimal space, then I also bought 2 16" heavy duty L brackets to mount it to my wall, and it looks awfully good with a mounted tv above. There's also a white version of it

  1. Declutter

  2. Get some frosted window film and apply it to the glass doors in your desk cabinets. That way you can hide away your clutter without anyone seeing it.

  3. Whatever the ribbons and stuff on the wall are, they need to be moved. You might consider putting a big slab of cork board where they are hanging too...to give you a spot to attach important papers, reminders, photos etc etc

  4. Your bookshelf is overloaded at the top, and virtually empty at the bottom. Evenly distribute the weight so that the boards don't sag. Fill in any extra space on the shelfs with the knick knacks that are currently cluttering your desk.

  5. mount a hook somewhere to hang your earphones

  6. Consider getting a monitor mounting arm for your PC monitor. The Amazon Basics Single Arm monitor mount is 100 bucks, but its built like a tank. Being able to move the monitor and have it floating gives you more usable desk space and it would allow you to move your monitor directly in front of your webcam in case you needed to show someone something on the monitor during a video chat.

  7. I would consider replacing the desk lamp with something that puts all the light directly on the desk. You have a floor uplight in the background giving you plenty of indirect light. You don't need to stare at a lit up globe all day on your desk too

I love all of these suggestions. The only thing I'd piggyback onto this is a really comfy fuzzy throw.

This is my current favorite. Maybe in the Dark Rose? Depends on which colors you want to pick up from your rug.

  1. It seems you have enough room for a small cafe like table which usually has two chairs. You might be able to fit something a little bigger. You can place it right in front of the sink area. It's too bad who ever designed the space didn't think to extend the counter top in front of the sink a foot or so more. Then you could buy three bar stool height chairs and use that for dining/seating.
  2. You don't mention a TV so I'm going to assume you're not going to have one. You could find an ottomon like cube to put in front of the bed. These usually provide some seating (for putting on shoes) as well as storage. Here is one at Amazon just as a suggestion: https://www.amazon.com/Simpli-Home-Bretton-Storage-Ottoman/dp/B079Y9L66P/ref=asc_df_B079Y9L66P/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=308631611034&hvpos=1o8&hvnetw=g&hvrand=10382805015300711790&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9067609&hvtargid=pla-293946777986&psc=1
  3. Looks like you have room for at least one night table right outside the closet doors. They have ones with two drawers. Again, more quick storage options.
  4. You might also be able to find some kind of drawers that could fit in the area to the right of the closet. It would have to be low enough so as not to block those light/power switches.
  5. You will then have that big blank wall in the main area. The Kallax from Ikea is a good option but you might want to look at additional shelving or storage on that wall.

Do you mean like this ?

Actually this post got me thinking and now I’m thinking of doing this along the back window with a rolling cart in front. I think that will be a great use of space!

One tip for hanging tvs that I always like is hiding the cords behind the wall. This is a link that shows that product. https://www.amazon.com/PowerBridge-Recessed-Management-PowerConnect-Wall-Mounted/dp/B00GWGZKF6

As for a storage device, maybe use like a cube organizer or a traditional media shelving unit to hold that stuff. Something with doors is always nice to hide clutter from games. You could potentially hang that too if you want. Don't know how it would fit in with the room, just depends on the rest of the house.

Depending on the space you have, you can look at something like this. They come in all sizes. It's what I use for mine and love it.

I don't have any pictures of my furniture but here are some similar pieces I found online:

vanity https://i.etsystatic.com/7825084/r/il/30bf36/1645205487/il_794xN.1645205487_5260.jpg

mirror https://a.1stdibscdn.com/archivesE/upload/1121189/f_91066011511171514130/9106601_org.jpg

lamp https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075FGYWRB/?coliid=IW4A2SWQ74JJ9&colid=3514RPJIH72JQ&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

statement chair https://www.audenza.com/gatsby-pink-velvet-petal-armchair

and I'm going to have to get a new bedframe and mattress, but I'm thinking I'll just go with some basic white jersey sheets and either no bedframe or a black one without a headboard or end

Other than that I'm minimizing the amount of furniture I have. Books stacked in piles on the floor, homework done in living room, I want to pretend I'm a bohemian east coast scholar for a minute

i also have a ton of plants and artwork in peach/green/red tones (looks like this https://www.pinterest.com/pin/AcNxXbFB8GvUvXBYbZr0JC6Mcp6fp_nrspENVtuE57bKpzkKnXzzoaU/). I want to put in a projector screen across from my bed (so a big white sheet essentially)

Interestingly enough I was thinking about royal or sky blue shag too, kind of ironic/dramatic. The lighting in the room isnt terrible (it's in Oregon, so I mean, as not terrible as it gets when it rains every day) you can't see it in this picture but there's another window and a closet along the same wall. I think the drabness is just the colors that it's painted.
