Well, you're right about how many people screw up and spend more for very little benefit, but I'm more focused on what is the best advice you can give someone that doesn't have either yet and wants to play modern games.

As far as fairness in comparing them, I was dismantling a post that only discussed price while cheating on the prices.

However, if you want to add having a Windows computer for non-game tasks to the requirement of playing a modem AAA game like fallout 4, we can have that discuss that comparison and I find that both options come out basically even today.

If you put care into selecting your deals, you can get an 3-4 year old business PC that has come off lease for under $150. Desktop or laptop examples

Combine with an Xbox one for $310-320

Resell the gears of war download code card on eBay or CL for $10-20 and you've spent $430 and have a brand new console with a warranty and a PC that will do pretty much anything the $500 PC build will do other than modem games. Reselling the gears card is not much different than doing rebates on PC components.

Yes, you will have to pay $40 for XBL each year but you'll have the latest generation console for the next ~6 years which is guaranteed to run the latest AAA games. That's $240 for online play over 6 years. On the $500 PC alternative you will need a new video card every 2-3 years depending on how cheap you go with them if you want to play new games at good settings. If you spend $170 on a graphics or graphics and RAM upgrade at 3 years, it's effectively the same cost.

I'd recommend the console and cheap PC alternative to many families because their kid can play halo and play online with more of their friends. This is something plenty of kids and adults will care about. Popular PC games are on sale more often but if you wait for demand to die off you can save money on Xbox games too. Number of games and types of games that someone will buy can make a big difference in how much one would save on the PC side over the life of the system.

Over a decade ago when I was a teenager, I went to a flea market (AKA swap meet) with my folks and while we were walking around looking at things, I spied a copy of the Interplay 15th Anniversary Anthology in what looked to be new/like new condition. It had Redneck Rampage on it and I'd enjoyed playing that game when I'd borrowed it off someone a few years earlier, so I decided I had to have it. Spent what little money I had and I remember flicking through the tome that was the manual for all the games on the ride home (I would religiously read the manuals for any game I got before playing). While looking through, I saw there was a bunch of artwork of some cartoony looking dude with a gun in one section, so I ended up reading the manual for that game, Fallout 1. It sounded intriguing and awesome, so I installed it and dived right in.

I'd never played an RPG before, so I made a few mistakes creating my character and struggled at first, but I was so hooked on what I was seeing, I persisted and persevered. Nothing I'd played before was so dark and gritty with how it presented it's world and your place in it. Eventually, I finished it and while browsing the web via a dialup connection, I discovered there was a second game. I immediately looked up a copy of it on Ebay, gave my parents the money for it and got them to order it for me. When it arrived, I dived into that and was similarly hooked.

I played both a fair few times, especially Fallout 2, over the years while waiting for a third game. I was absolutely devastated to hear that Van Buren had been cancelled. Eventually, Bethesda bought the game and FO3 was announced, so I pre-ordered that shit. While it absolutely had flaws, I actually enjoyed FO3 when I got my hands on it and thought Bethesda had made a reasonable attempt to make a game in the spirit of it's predecessors, but in a new style. Of course, New Vegas came out and improved upon what FO3 had done and I loved it.

I've always found post apocalyptic media interesting and have much love for it, as I enjoy the dark, gritty, desperate nature of it. Post nuclear war, zombies, whatever, it's all good to me, I even love the localised post-apoc like style of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series. If you hand me something and tell me it's post-apoc, I'm probably going to enjoy it.

It's actually out now. The hardcover is out of stock on Amazon but there are digital editions. http://www.amazon.com/Art-Fallout-4-Various-ebook/dp/B017L0J1FQ/ref=tmm_kin_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1449762475&sr=8-1

I agree with you on skyscrapers, but I've found a few that play around with verticality on the outside (which is pretty much new to the newer Fallouts imo).

The point about raiders is a good point, too. Personally I was hoping to see something like raider subcultures, like raiders wearing different kinds of armor or subtle differences at least like armor color based on where they're found.

Sorry about the watermarks, I can currently only edit photos using my phone. I didn't mean for them to be xbox huge. :s Also, I took most of these with instagram in mind, hence why some of these have weird spacing on the sides. ANYWAY. The recent poll results have inspired me to try and be more active, so here's a bunch of crap I've been working on since the beginning of the year!

  1. Boone's beret - The beret was purchased here, and the patch from halogo, I've purchased several patches from his store and definitely recommend it! This set was given to my friend as a Christmas gift, and I didn't know how to attach the patch onto the beret. I just wanted a quick photo of it, as modeled by Dogmeat. ;p

  2. Joke/Drinking costume accessories - Something about Gucci and basic bitches. For a joke costume I put an embarassing amount of time putting all this together. The Nuka-Cola/Minnie Mouse headband is some cheapie $1 headband I got from LA's Fashion District, the bow is made out of confetti dot (this shit is awful to sew btw, ugh) and hot glued on. Muggy is printed out, with clear laminate on top, and a craft foam and foam board backing. I did a few coats of glitter top coat, because why the fuck not?

  3. I Survived 2299 and HAVE A DAY shirts - I Survived 2299 shirt is from /u/Mr_Milenko, if you want your own send him a message, he might be willing to do another run. The HAVE A DAY shirt is fabric paint and hand cut stencils, cropped by me because I will live and die in crop tops (or graphic tees). It's also part of my joke/drinking costume in the previous photo.

  4. I Survived 2299 and HAVE A DAY shirts - just the back of the shirts.

  5. Vault 21, 13, and 101 water flask/canteen covers The photo makes the colors look REALLY dark, sorry! The one in the top right corner is my original, top left is the remake which is much better sized. 13 was done for an art trade, and 101 is for my (eventual) Lone Wanderer costumes.

  6. Enclave shirts - I made custom shirts, one as a birthday gift and one for myself, seeing as the official Bethesda store doesn't carry 3XL or women's extra small. Fabric paint and hand cut stencils again.

  7. Custom name tag for everyone's favorite BoS Procurement Specialist - I had this custom made from AlphaEngravers, to go with my costume, because why not? (Uhh, I'll post that here... at some point.)

  8. More HAVE A DAY shirts done as art trades - I didn't expect to get so many requests for this shirt! ^^; 'HAVE A DAY' is also stenciled on the backs of these.

  9. Custom Vault 0 water flask/canteen - I made this one for one of my instagram giveaways, the winner wanted Vault 0 to go with his Zero (Borderlands 2) costume! I use only 18oz flasks, so there's a bobblehead for scale, which was purchased from Bethesda's official store.

  10. #JustCourierThings - I'm making a new Courier backpack, and hopefully I'll be able to bring it with me to WonderCon. The Mojave Express patch was sent to me by Chris Avellone and Obsidian Entertainment, yeah no worries it's just there for show and won't actually go on my bag. ;p Vault 13 is from CoolPatches, Vault Boy* is from PatchsPatches, and the 'New Vegas' patch was purchased here with the shitty hand embroidery added by yours truly. ;p The Sunset Sarsaparilla pinback button is from TheGeekEmporium, and the rest were made by me on ArtsCow.

AAAND JUST FOR FUN here's a photo of Tim Cain enjoying the Vault 13 flask I posted here back in December, no big deal. I totally did not freak out, nope not at all. Anyway, thanks for looking/reading!! Hopefully my post covered everything but if you guys (and gals) have any questions, ask away~

OP, I understand you have a lot of passion and you want to drive that passion into making this project, but please understand that everything about this reeks of failure. No proof of concept, no proof of investment, no idea of what the scope will be, and no experience in actual modding. I understand that you, and a lot of other people, have the same sort of vague goal, but without proper management your project will have a massive turnover rate, never ending scope, and won't ever come close to being released. You need to first build up your management skills and your experience so you are credible when you want to start a massive group project like this one.

What I recommend you to do is to immediately stop working on this project, and go develop a few small mods by yourself. This will help teach you how a project cycle goes, what works and what doesn't when it comes to pacing and scope, and overall give you some experience using mod tools so you are more credible. After you feel like you are ready to start working on a team project, I would recommend you first read a book or attend a class on technical communication and group work. I recommend Markel's book on technical communication and Wolfe's book on how to work in a group. Both of these books will give you a much better idea of how to manage a group and what to expect with a project. Even then, I would still recommend you to work with a group to create multiple smaller scale projects, until you are finally confident enough in your management skills to tackle the mammoth that you are suggesting today.

That's awesome! Rehab is bullshit. At least for most heroin addicts. I think it might be beneficial for other addicts, but I'm not sure. I guess I shouldn't speak in generalities. In my experience rehab is bullshit. I went to a $30,000 month long rehab and it didn't do anything for me. All they did was try to get me to be into AA/NA. According to studies AA/NA has a 5-10% success rate. That is the same rate for going cold turkey with no treatment. AA is free and the rehabs are making so much money just for telling us we need to go to meetings. 85% of rehabs are abstinence only/12 step based.

There is a really good book called The Sober Truth: Debunking the Bad Science Behind 12 Step Programs and the Rehab Industry. Honestly I haven't gotten around to reading it all but it is a really good book. Also, I just want to say that I know 12 step programs have helped some people and that's great. The problem is that it doesn't work for most people. And those people are not given any other options because the majority of treatment centers just focus on the 12 steps.

Anyways, I'm really glad subs are working for you. Why are you paying cash for the visits and the scripts? No insurance? Are you on the films?

I cut and pasted this comment from one I made a while back. It's very condensed, but if it looks like something you'd like to try I'd be happy to give much more detailed steps. I learned completely on my own watching Youtube videos. There's a learning curve but it wasn't bad. Just expect to make mistakes.

  • Found a pepakura file
  • Bought foam mats from a hardware store (1/2" thick)
  • Printed out the pieces of the file using the pepakura software and then transferred them to the foam
  • Cut out
  • Hot glue
  • Sand down (you can sand down the foam itself or apply body filler Bondo to smooth out edges)
  • Apply plastidip
  • Paint

For all the bells and whistles I had to get creative and find random things around my job (I work in an industrial area so I had a bit of an upper hand there) as well as use ordinary items from the hardware store e.g. the light and tubing.

First off, you are good peoples.

Secondly, the best place to check would be Etsy - there are handmade Fallout items on there for just about everything, from clothing to household items. You could ask him in general about the game(s) and see if he mentions any particular favourite characters/factions and get merchandise associated with them.

Or you could go the official route and consider:

I don't know of very many mods but when i switched to largely pc gaming i bought an xbox adapter and it's been great, works especially well with fallout since the developer supports controllers for the PC version. http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Wireless-Gaming-Receiver-Windows/dp/B000HZFCT2 I'd recommend checking it out.

u/Impertinent_Buffoon · 1 pointr/Fallout

The best of the prices are from Refurbished PC and JSM Computers. Check the shipping price on both to see which is better in that regard.

Consider this if it runs New Vegas poorly, but it may not be needed.

Now, you could also pick one up from Best Buy, Walmart or wherever, but I would not recommend that, overpriced, and full of bloatware (useless programs you don't need) for both. All this is assuming you live in the United States, if not, I am clueless as to where to buy it from.

u/orlock · 1 pointr/Fallout

Because it would be really interesting?

I'd love a fallout set in Australia for example, with more or less the same alternate history branches meaning that all the grand engineering schemes Australia was thinking about in the 1950s such creating the Inner Sea came to fruition or, perhaps, charvolants travelling between settlements, a la Blue Tyson

Or a Britain that looked as if it came from the Ladybird books of my childhood now looking more like Neverwhere. Possibly with Borribles thrown in.

There's nothing particularly exceptional about American ridiculousness.

u/databeast · 3 pointsr/Fallout

I'm actually English, and so wasn't really introduced to Mormonism properly until I moved to Denver Colorado many years ago. Over the years, looking at modern America, it amazes me how much of American culture is influenced by Mormonism, despite their status as something of a marginalized group.

I love pointing out to 'prepper' types how most of their doctrine comes from Mormon self-sufficiency doctrine (a good example of this: one of my favorite books on post-apocalyptic food self-sufficiency: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0394492285)

Tl;Dr when it comes to the post-apocalypse, the Mormons have always been front-and-center in terms of practicality.

u/Nf1nk · 2 pointsr/Fallout

I am late to the game here but.

There was a 2nd edition version of this book as well. Building settlements has been part of D&D for ages. Surviving after the fall of civilization will require some sort of shelter.

The actual mechanics of this can be debated, but having an option where you can put down roots and do more than just survive is a nice and good thing.

The BGM that plays when the radio isn't on is called the Original Soundtrack.

Never heard a didgeridoo in any of the music in F4's OST.

it seems those prices are only relevant for those two days of the year. And I've managed to find an xbox one $320 USD. so you were almost right.
