I've had my HomePod since day 1 and I've never had an Airplay dropout.
If you're using your ISP's modem for wifi, that's where I would point my finger. I used to have tons of AirPlay problems even with Airport base stations, but moving to a Ubiquiti AP (which replaced two Airports with its one central AP) has made my whole house AirPlay rock solid.
