https://dashcamtalk.com/ is a great resource for dash cam info.

I just purchased the Powerucc Panorama 2s (although it's no longer available from Amazon directly, so no more Prime at the moment) and have been happy thus far. Only real complaint so far is that it's not as easy to take the whole camera out, you have to completely remove the thumb screw and bolt. Some of them have a simple button to press to remove the camera while leaving the mount. So if you live in an area with high crime or you're worried about leaving your camera in your car during hot summers or cold winters, you might want something different. It hasn't negatively impacted me, but it's definitely something that would be a deal breaker for some.

Also, despite being on the middle to upper-middle end of dash cams, I was not super impressed with the video quality, but I do need to spend a moment seeing if there's a problem with mine or there's a setting I should adjust. It's decent, and night videos are surprisingly good, but I was hoping the quality would be more similar to a GoPro. If GoPro made a version designed for cars (with auto start/stop record and overwrite for old videos for continuous recording), I'd be all over that instead.

What I do like about this model is that it supports up to a 256GB SD card, whereas most of the dash cams I looked at support maximum of 32GB SD or microSD cards. Huge storage isn't necessary, since it overwrites in a loop, but it's nice to have if you're a data hoarder like myself.

A LOT of people have been recommending the G1W (also recommended on dashcamtalk.com) because it's only like $50 and is the best bang for your buck, but I wanted something a little higher-end. I figured, like all other electronics, you get what you pay for. Without more experience with different models, I can't say whether that's absolutely true or not, but it generally is. If you go with the G1W, be aware that there are some fakes for sale on Amazon and elsewhere online. I would recommend buying only directly from Amazon themselves, then at least you can return it if it's crap.

Oh, in that case, here is a review I made for the dashcam I currently use. It's a dual lens cam that has 1280x720 resolution for the front and 720x480 for the rear cam. It uses the Allwinner F20 CPU, which is a bit outdated, but gets the job done. I am still on the lookout for a camera with the same form factor and features, but better overall video quality. Here it is on Amazon for a great price.

Also, here is a very good review by Techmoan, who has quite a few dashcam reviews that are very good - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X16kiyDtTms

If you had something else in mind i.e. single cam, higher quality, different size/form factor, etc. just let me know, and I can make other recommendations as well.

It might seem surprising, but its true. If you read modern literature or papers on sleep you'll find that the consensus is that energy conservation is not the purpose of sleep.

Pulled from first paragraph on Wikipedia:

"Sleep is sometimes thought to help conserve energy, though this theory is not fully adequate as it only decreases metabolism by about 5–10%. Additionally it is observed that mammals require sleep even during the hypometabolic state of hibernation, in which circumstance it is actually a net loss of energy as the animal returns from hypothermia to euthermia in order to sleep.

Sleep is a heightened anabolic state, accentuating the growth and rejuvenation of the immune, nervous, skeletal and muscular systems."

This book is a relatively easy read and has a few sections dedicated to modern-day debate of sleep: http://www.amazon.com/Brain-Rules-Principles-Surviving-Thriving/dp/0979777747

Search for "HD Car DVR 2.5 TFT LCD 270° 6 IR LED" on ebay, you can grab one for $20. Mine shipped from hong kong. It is cheaply made and has some rattles sometimes, but that is only on the video itself. It works very well and takes some pretty clear video for the price. You can set it to record until out of space or set it to record in 5 or 10 minute intervals and it will delete old footage as it runs out of space. I put an 8gb sdcard in mine and it lasts a long time.

Here is how it looks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DuvGjOMmxSo which imo is pretty damn good for $20.

Looks like the same one is posted below from Amazon as well by TwistedMexi. http://www.amazon.com/2-5-inch-Vehicle-Recorder-Dashboard-Camcorder/dp/B0053DDNW6/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1376583384&sr=1-1&keywords=dash+cam

They are made of similar types of glass but the thickness and curve will be different. Front wind shields are made of laminate glass and the rest of the windows are made of tempered glass. Also, a fixed and curved glass will have significantly more structural integrity than a movable flat one.

It only looks like it comes apart easily because the method used to break it could only be accomplished with a partially open window. With regards to the safety in breaking auto glass in emergency situations I highly recommend having one of these in your glove compartment:

Get a pair of Dashcams...

-------

When does the chip fill up? Never.

It just starts over after about ~30 hours in 1900x1080 x 30FPS

Longer if x 15FPS

Even longer if 1280x720 x 30FPS et.al.

And if I turned off the "Parking mode" motion sensor probably a few days.

I've had it last at least a week, before overwriting the older footage with some settings.

It uses the 12V accessory (cigar lighter plug) so if you want to have it 24/7 you'll need to hard wire to a fuse (I used the door fuse) or you could also use the below device that checks the voltage and when it drops to a set level, it shuts off or can set it to shut off after a period of time.

-----------

From a previous thread here is my setup;

Front is Finevu CR-500HD

Rear is BlackVue Wi-Fi DR500GW-HD

To keep it 24/7 live/motion sensor I use this.

But the BlackVue UPS is the same, so either/or.

As far as one over the other?

The nice things about the BlackVue are both a built-in GPS and WiFi.

I have this just under my rear brake light (top of back window version) and I can use my phone iphone/android/tablet to view what is shown/stored on the camera. WiFi is not that strong and sometimes you have to sit next to the garage to be able to view away from the car. (Originally had it above the rear-view mirror, but moved it to the back for a better view, still have the mount up there and I might install a 3rd cam so can see the interior again)

And the GPS is built in so when I take out the 32GB chip it sync's up with a map to show where I was driving and how fast (moving map style)

Drawback? It is wide? i.e. the FineVu is a bullet type of cam and basically you see a lens, the BlackVue is a tube that covers the same width as the brake light so it shows more.

I like the FineVue as far as stealth but the BlackVue for the features.

The FineVu has a connection to add a monitor to view onboard images. And you have to buy an external GPS for the FineVu @ ~$40

Basically it is better to remove the 32GB MicroSD chip and view it on your computer.

Neither (at the time of purchase) can handle the 64GB MicroSD chips

They both loop the storage, i.e. after x amount of space, it writes over the older saves.

And depending on how you set up the sensitivity is how much it captures. e.g. if you have it on super sensitive, you'll get many 'Events' that never erase (like potholes/speed bumps) instead of regular capture/parking mode that gets overwritten on a space basis.

Both images are just as good.

Oh, and not a good representation of quality as I had to squeeze from a 32MB AVI to a 2MB GIF file and drop some frames, but here is a sample of it capturing a car crash on the left.

They're foscam ip cameras. I like them alot. I got mine on sale for ~60 a couple years ago. I don't know the exact model number but it is the kind that pans and tilts. Setting up email notifications was a bit of a pain but after setup works perfectly. So yes, after last night I definitely recommend them.

Edit: I found them on amazon.

>I'm talking like, 'dawn of man' era, not a post-french revolution state.

The "dawn of man" era is what Hobbes and his predecessors refer to as the "state of nature". Even though Hobbes is writing during the 17th century, he is concerned with establishing how the very first political organizations formed out of the state of nature. Essentially Hobbes is saying that primitive man would make a rational choice to give up a few rights to secure others. Even if you are a primitive man you can realize the benefits of increasing your security through political organization.

It has been a while since I have read the Leviathan so don't take my brief account of what he says as correct. You can read the whole thing for free on the internet http://oregonstate.edu/instruct/phl302/texts/hobbes/leviathan-a.html#CHAPTERI. However, it is somewhat of a tough read because of the outdated language. Robert Nozick's Anarchy, State, and Utopia is a much more modern book that addresses your concern in the first chapter. It is also one the most influential books of the 20th century. http://www.amazon.com/Anarchy-State-Utopia-Robert-Nozick/dp/0465097200

>religion was good.

It very well might of been, but I'm just saying that there are aslo other very good reasons to form political organizations and laws.

Aye, this just reminded me of a book I just finished reading. It's called Sergeant Rex and it's about a military working dog and his handler, Mike Dowling and their experiences when they were deployed with the USMC in Iraq. Very good read, if you're a dog lover and interested in military books, I suggest anyone and everyone to check it out. It's given me a whole new appreciation for working dogs and just dogs in general.

I bought this one a while ago. It's not phenomenal quality, but it's good enough to distinctly make out the license plate of a car in front of you. It's great for the price and the charger it comes with has an insanely long cable. I snaked it around my car so it doesn't dangle randomly. I can post a video tomorrow if you want to see the quality.

Dash cams are so cheap and easy to setup that I don't see a reason to not use one. If you end up in a situation like this, you got hard proof. The one time it does happen, you'll regret not having it (similar argument to make for winter tires).

I got this one setup in my car with the charger nicely wrapping around the side of the dash, under, and plugged into the charging outlet. As soon as it detects power, it starts up and records until the SD card fills up (deleting oldest videos if SD card fills up).

Another nice thing, is that most of these cameras also come with a GPS, which can also be used to show location as well as your current speed in the video. Can be useful if someone says you were driving too fast and came out of nowhere, or if you aren't sure the exact location something happened.

Definitely not questioning your story, but I am VERY skeptical. Sounds like an awesome product if it indeed does work.

u/snumfalzumpa · 2 pointsr/JusticePorn

honestly if that intrigues you, you should really read Suburban Nation. it's a fantastic book.

I got this:

http://www.amazon.com/Portable-Dashboard-Camcorder-Camera-F500L/dp/B007X4PUGU/ref=pd_cp_e_3

http://www.amazon.com/Transcend-Class-Flash-Memory-TS32GSDHC10E/dp/B003VNKNF0/ref=pd_bxgy_e_img_y

The F500L works well enough and is a highly popular choice. I only spent around $110 with shipping. Which I think is highly worthwhile investment. The only caveat is the power cable that came with it caused me a lot of radio interference. I got another power cable and it works much better now. It is a DC plug to mini usb so it was not hard to find a different replacement. (I am using one from a garmin gps, but I'm sure you could get one at bestbuy).

This one is also pretty cheap and gets great reviews. It's the G1W.

Just be aware that fake-but-hilarious amazon reviewing is a thing today. There's a billion of them. This could be real, though. Funny if it is, tho also sad. But decent chances it's just a joke.

Here you go. This is the one my buddy used. You can't read the license plate off of the video, but it works well for $20. It gets you the big picture. It sets thing up into like 3 minute segments and will over write the oldest one automatically.

This one is the best bang for your buck as far as quality and features go. http://www.amazon.com/Foscam-FI8910W-Wireless-Network-Camera/dp/B006ZP8UOW

Plenty of reviews and examples of video quality on youtube (LINK)

They're very good cameras and you can remotely control the pan/tilt angles from your phone/tablet/work computer if necessary.

You can buy (or build) a DVR unit to record video streams. Never install cameras without a recording solution unless you have a very specific reason (like checking on a baby). You simply cannot be around 24/7 to watch it. And "I saw X happen" doesn't help you legally, but "I have video of X happening" does.
