    Light Novel Translation

    ___

Note that the above is actually almost entirely copy/pasted from the volume 1 discussion for the series, just with link changes. Here. By clicking the source button on any self-post or comment, you'll be able to see the raw text format allowing easy copy/pasting. Even now, you can simply copy/paste this comment and edit your post to instantly make it of a higher quality without much effort.

To explain the different aspects of the post:

  • Multiple Titles - When looking up a post, having multiple titles of the series in the post itself makes it 100% more searchable. Not everyone will instantly recognize the series by the English title as short titles are also pretty common like "Isekai Smartphone."
  • Purchase Links - Useful for directing people to where they can buy the volume themselves to read. If you can't make it convenient for someone, they might give up after 5 seconds. (Let's be honest, the J-Novel Club site still isn't the most intuitive site yet.)
  • Synopsis - Lure in new readers with a description of the series. Not every person will have read volume 1. New readers might just open the post to see what the series is about.
  • Database Links - Help users actually find more information on the series from various light novel database sites. They use these sites for tracking their progress and finding more information.
  • Previous Discussion Search - Help users find the older discussions for the same series. It lets them see what others have thought of the series or find purchase links for older volumes.
  • Version Mention - That little bit at the bottom about it being a Light Novel translation is helpful for users that don't know whether it's a light novel or web novel that's being translated. This is a must when there are multiple versions of the series being translated. It's even better if you include something like (LN) in the title too like the first volume's discussion.

Honzuki no Gekokujou (Ascendance of a Bookworm)
Ascendance of a Bookworm: Part 1 Volume 1 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Q32HSFN/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_XWt6CbJCY16SA

The first volume was just released digitally by publisher J-Novel Club, but there are many more volumes to come. Series is really well written and a breath of fresh air.

Also I really liked:

-Didn't I Say To Make My Abilities Average In The Next Life?!

-I Shall Survive Using Potions!

Both series are by the same author, and honestly, Survive Using Potions! basically reads like it was made from a rough draft of Make My Abilities Average using unused ideas because many elements are quite similar.
But both are really fun reads with wit, adventure, and a healthy dose of humor.

Make my Abilities Average has about 5 or 6 volumes released at the moment with more to come. Survive Using Potions! was released more recently and only has 2 volumes so far, but more incoming

Vertical:
I'd put a vote in for Flying Witch (I'm pretty certain that none of the written content is objectionable and the anime is clean as I watched it with my young niece), My Ordinary Life -Nijijou (possibly has objectionable content due to mean pranks), and The Garden of Words.

Warning: "Innocent World" is mismarketed by Barnes and Noble as a children's book. It is anything but!

Yen Press:
http://yenpress.com/books/by-rating/
All ages. (Although I'd object to Baccano due to Ladd: All-together now: "Thank you, ..., the star is here!").

Everything in Mature is definitely not recommended.

Youtsuba and ! (easy recommendation), Spice and Wolf,

J-Novel Club:
Everything but Smartphone (ecchi), Arifureta (very sociopathic protagonist, jerk to everyone), arguably Little Apocalypse (ecchi), and arguably Grimgar (permadeath). +1 for Realist Hero, Infinite Dendrogram. A subscription makes for a good Christmas present due to the content model (you should look it up elsewhere).

The Great Passage Amazon-sponsored translation is not a true LN, but it has an anime, and it's pretty great.

Absolutely definitely Kino no Tabi. The protagonist, Kino, accompanied by a talking motorcycle named Hermes, travels through a mystical world of many different countries and forests, each unique in its customs and people.

Someone just made a thread about Book Girl and it's worth a read (and purchase) if you like the summary.

Maoyuu Maou Yuusha has a male and female lead, but the premise is plenty interesting by itself.

If you're a fan of superhero stories, Worm is probably the best one out there with a female lead (even without, still one of the best).

P.S. You might want to give some more information about what genres or types of books you enjoy, so the recommendations are better. As you can see from the recs, even novels with female MCs can vary by a lot!

P.P.S. Totally forgot about Twelve Kingdoms, it's absolutely awesome.

Seconded and Thirded.

Cool, I have a couple of books in mind, but pardon me if I suggest something thick too...Sometimes I forget that not all Japanese novels are "light novels" =).

Anyway, my first suggestion is Slum Online.

http://www.amazon.com/Slum-Online-Novel-Hiroshi-Sakurazaka/dp/1421534398

To Quote from Amazon:

"Reality bites for college freshman Etsuro Sakagami, but on the MMO Versus Town he's a karate master who can handle anything. Who will be his greatest opponent-the seemingly invisible Slasher Jack, or his would-be girlfriend Fumiko? Etsuro Sakagami is a college freshmen who feels uncomfortable in reality, but when he logs onto the combat MMO Versus Town, he assumes the personality of "Tetsuo," a karate champ on his way towards becoming the most powerful martial artist around. While his relationship with new classmate Fumiko goes nowhere, he spends his days and nights online in search of the invincible fighter Slasher Jack. Floating in between real and virutal, at last, Etsuro finds himself face to face with his most powerful opponent..."

I suggest we start a thread to discuss...say about week from now on Thursday/Friday? I'm not sure how fast everyone reads but we can use this first time as a gauge or postpone if necessary.

If you'd rather start with something else \ more popular, or need help finding a copy, let me know!

I'm fairly new to LN, but I'll share some I'm enjoying. Fair warning: I'm a woman and thus am inclined to jousei and shoujo works.

Expecting To Fall Into Ruin, I Aim To Become A Blacksmith (Botsuraku Yotei Nanode, Kajishokunin wo Mezasu): MC wakes up after a fall at age 12, remembering his past life as a Japanese high school student, and recognising that he's been reincarnated into the world of his younger sister's favourite otome game, as the future husband of the rival of the game heroine, and thus destined to share her fate of becoming a ruined noble and living as a farmer. Since he's going to become a commoner anyway, he decides to get a profession and live comfortably, and so he apprentices as a blacksmith. At the same time, he tries to improve his marquisate's income and standard of living (because, he'll be living in it) by expanding and improving its chief industries. I like this story because the MC doesn't accept his destiny, instead going out and making his own fate. Manga adaption here.

Common Sense of a Duke's Daughter ( Koushaku Reijou no Tashinami ): MC is the rival character in an otome game, who recalls her previous life as a Japanese accountant after the events of the game. She's lost everything and is exiled to her home duchy, but her father gives her authority over the duchy, to see what she'll do. She starts a business, starts improving conditions and living standards, and 'discovers' chocolate, hair conditioner, silk and double-entry accounting. I like this one because the MC genuinely had her heart broken and she is trying to rebuild her life, find new meaning and move on. Manga adaption here; these are Amazon links to the English translations of the first four volumes.

Queen of the Scalpel: In her first life, she was a terrible queen, who committed many crimes and was eventually put to death by her husband the king. Reincarnated in modern-day South Korea, she became a gifted surgeon and dedicated herself to saving lives, atoning for her sins in her first life. After dying in a plane crash, she awakened to find herself back in her first life, aged sixteen. She grabs the chance with both hands: this time, she's not going to get married but instead live an honest and honourable life as a doctor, saving lives. But, as a young noblewoman, many people are opposed to her ambition, not least of which is her former father-in-law the king. I like this one because, well, who *hasn't* wanted to go back and fix their mistakes? Manwa adaption here.

I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years (SoL, basically “Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid in isekai form)

Average Abilities (Adventure, SoL, a humorous twist on the OP protagonist story)

So I’m a Spider, So What? (isekai, humor, starts as humorous and develops a shockingly complex and dramatic plot; the lead is female but it doesn’t really factor in the plot much so far)

I Shall Survive Using Potions! (humor, SoL; a very funny and feminist take on isekai, by the same author as Average Abilities)

All of these are licensed in English, all of the digitally and some physically available to purchase

(Edited links to show Amazon instead of NU)

Edit 2: thought of a couple more that need to be mentioned

Obsessions of an Otome Gamer (otome isekai, romance, drama; one of the better LNs I’ve read; inspiring lead character who takes charge of her own life and pursued her newfound passion for the piano, a real treat if you played/play an instrument)

My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! (otome isekai, comedy; absolutely hilarious story of a reincarnated “Villainess” character trying to prevent her disastrous fate, but is actually a lovable idiot. A must-read)

u/HentaiWritingPrompts · 5 pointsr/LightNovels

Yes, the author has a well defined eccentric style loaded which can at times be hard to translate, but both the quality of writing and translation is excellent.

Vertical is releasing the volumes in English. They are paperbacks with original artwork on the cover and VOFAN's cover is on the page after the cover on a coated page with higher GSM/thickness.

u/eldar666 · 1 pointr/LightNovels

I recommend you start with reading Kizumonogatari as it is the only translated volume that the anime hasn't covered yet(At least the bluray isn't out yet). It has an audiobook on audible as well. Great music and voice-acting.

u/DrSquirrelBoy12 · 1 pointr/LightNovels

Oregairu is good as some comments have mentioned. Otherwise if you like Monogatari and its writing style you will like Zaregoto. Vol 3 is going to come out in English this fall.

u/Compupaq · 1 pointr/LightNovels

I picked up Accel World, but haven't had a chance to read much of it. So far, it seems like a quality translation.

Also, the Sword Art Online light novel was released not so recently (April). I haven't read that yet, but I have read some of the Baka-Tsuki translation of it. When I get around to reading it, I'll actually be able to compare the two a little.

u/SINCEE · 3 pointsr/LightNovels

I'd say Spice & Wolf because it's a classic and The Irregular at Magic High School because it's fucking awesome.

u/Animes2Deep4U · 1 pointr/LightNovels

It has no official release, so the online fan translations I linked are the only ones that exist for it.

A single light novel volume that is licensed that you can buy though is [Bakemono no Ko] (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Boy-Beast-Mamoru-Hosoda/dp/0316270601/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1458357939&sr=8-2&keywords=the+boy+and+the+beast) in that case. And Another

Project Itoh's novels Harmony & Genocidal Organ are also good.

u/japzone · 3 pointsr/LightNovels

Amazon has them. If you want it for free, can't discuss that on this sub since they're licensed.

u/Timmaaah85 · 2 pointsr/LightNovels

https://global.bookwalker.jp/series/64742/

https://www.amazon.com.au/Rising-Shield-Hero-01-ebook/dp/B0193Z8FNG/ref=tmm_kin_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=

They currently have a free sample up on bookwalker, however you have just missed the sale that they did on the series.

Not sure if there are other digital reader sites where you can purchase the Light Novel.

u/LN_Life · 1 pointr/LightNovels

It's an official one. Thank you for your recommendation! Any links? Is it BAKEMONOGATARI?

u/xDarKraDx · 2 pointsr/LightNovels

There are some that have physical release and have only one or two volumes: Another, Your Name, The Boy and The Beast, and Your Lie in April

These are the ones that I have on top of my head right now.

u/acidtreat101 · 1 pointr/LightNovels

Because they are being released in the West you would have to buy them:

http://www.amazon.com/Sword-Art-Online-1-Aincrad/dp/0316371246

You can also acquire them easily on the pirate bay torrent site. I don't think the author has a planned number of books yet.

As for the last thing, just read the novel. Yes and no. That's not exactly right but the idea of time passing differently in the game is.

u/readher · 12 pointsr/LightNovels

A special box set with 7 books included released today.

u/TeddyVoid · 3 pointsr/LightNovels

Amazon France or Book Depository (free shipping) for Kizumonogatari, the rest of the series hasn't been confirmed for official release just yet. However it seems they are currently out of stock at the moment due to the high demand of the book so you'll have to wait till they re-stock again.

There is also a wiki in the sidebar for future enquirers like this else any light novels you'll be able to find on Amazon or Book Depository.

u/canadianaviator · 1 pointr/LightNovels

The Haruhi Series is really good. The anime ran from 1-4 with one chapter of 5. Here is the order

If you have seen Death Note then I would highly recommend Death Note: Another Note by NisiOisiN. It follows a case earlier in L's career. Its only one volume and I love it but you can only read it after you have watched Death Note since it uses some of the same characters.

If you enjoyed the anime you could check out Sword Art Online.

Since you already have Spice and Wolf I can't really recommend any other officially translated ones. You can try this blog for a list of the officially translated light novels.

u/Shirobane · 1 pointr/LightNovels

The physical release is unchanged at March 20th.
Weirdly, the publication date on Amazon for volume 1 has also changed to January 29, 2018 as well (it was December 8, 2015): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0193Z8FNG
