I like that book but I also recommend this http://www.amazon.com/Barlowes-Guide-Extraterrestrials-Science-Literature/dp/0894803247 Barlowe's Guide to Extraterrestrials: Great Aliens from Science Fiction Literature. This book is literally the most accurate depictions of aliens in my opinion. This will get you hype for the creatures in NMS.

Nah, I've got the solution. It's in the mail, literally, and let me tell you, it bizarrely took me more than two hours searching all sorts of random nonsense to finally happen upon the female-female microUSB coupler. They're incredibly rare, it seems.

So, five items total for this setup (already had first two).

  1. Charge cable that actually reaches to where you sit
  2. MicroSD card
  3. OTG Y-cable
  4. Compact microSD adapter
  5. This hard-to-find little bastard (female-female microUSB coupler)

Note all female Y-cable plugs like #3 just pass power. Only the male plug passes power + data. That's why the coupler is needed.

I'm gonna tie some nylon thread around the coupler, into which I'll have cut notches, with the other end tied to the Y-cable.

    End result will be:
    • "Great sunset..." > save screenshot
    • Plug coupler into Y-cable's male end
    • Plug coupler'd cable into 10-foot charge cable
    • PS4 sees microSD as USB storage (via extension cable)
    • Save screenshot to storage
    • Unplug from charge cable, remove coupler
    • Plug cable into phone
    • Access PNG on phone via OTG

I'll let you know how it goes...

If you can get an Alienware laptop with an i7 and at least a gtx nvidia card with 16gb of ram your going to be just fine with NMS. But your better off trying to build A PC if your willing to take a tower with you and a monitor plus k/m. Unless your not planning on playing Star citizen or Mortal Kombat your good with something that cheap and easy to travel with.

Amazon link: just scrape up a little more cash and you could get this AlienWare

No, the price of something shouldn't change whether you like something or not. However, the game being at a lower price could allow some people that couldn't before to buy it.

Because not everyone earns the same amount of money and has the same amount of responsibilities. Money isn't infinite, people have to make choices as to how they spend it.

You might have $60 on your wallet, and you might like No Man's Sky, but that doesn't mean you can buy it. There's a lot of other things you could do with that money, and some are more important. And so you find yourself having to make a choice, for example: Should I buy No Man's Sky or buy my ill mother's medicine?

An extreme example, of course, not everyone has to take care of ill relatives. But it illustrates my point: having the money to buy something doesn't mean that you can actually buy it, as that money might belong somewhere else we consider more important.

Back with my example: assuming your ill mother's medicine is worth $35 rather than your whole $60 savings, you still can't get No Man's Sky at full price. But if it were to be discounted to $25, and assuming that the game is second on your imaginary self-imposed priority list, then you could actually get it.

Well, that's how life works, but on a far bigger scale; we only have so much money, but a long list of things we want, some being very important, some not so much.

This is, of course, an overly simplified version of the actual Law of Supply and Demand. Which I highly encourage you to read upon. Learning Economics is something I would recommend to just about anyone.

Honestly mate, I couldn't say. I'm running a slightly faster CPU (i5-4430) and 16GB RAM. Perhaps that makes a difference. Or maybe the graphics card is just better. No idea. I just plug the things in and turn them on :)

Edit: The 1050 is this one for what it's worth.

In case you weren't aware, there's also a /r/PS4 subreddit. It's a pretty well-run sub, and they have a good a FAQ, and their own game deals sub. (For example, the Doom reboot for $30. Best Buy will price match, and if you have their Gamer's Club Unlocked membership, that's an additional 20% off, for a total of $24.) I haven't seen any deals for NMS.

I used some bracket pole mounts which are linked below to mount to the chair arm then used industrial strength velcro to attach the HOTAS to the mount for easy removal. It works great in Elite Dangerous, cant wait to try with my Vive in 2 weeks!

Two year VR owner here. One of these babies has helped me through sessions of Skyrim and Fallout 4. Great for when you're just going through your inventory: https://www.amazon.com/Adjustable-Sitting-Ergonomic-Stability-Standing/dp/B00HCLJDSK

Everything that everyone else is saying is all really great advice. Listen to it. Just keep your controllers charged while you're not playing. Have fun!

I just got this book, The Making of Middle-earth, the other day. I've yet to finish it, but so far it has spoken about Tolkien's history and his love of mythology. Including his naming techniques.

Here's the one I have. I freaking love it. Great picture.

I don't dislike woodgrain. I dislike making plastic look like woodgrain using stickers or other types of unconvincing fake veneer. ;)

It all comes down to the details.

For example:

  1. This is cool: SKINOWN wood skin for PS4
  2. But this is cringe: Pandaren wood skin for PS4
  3. But the same wood pattern that I think looks cool on the PS4, looks terrible (to me) on the Xbox One because it leaves so much plastic exposed: Gam3Gear wood skin for Xbox One (same pattern as SKINOWN for PS4)

See the difference? The difference between 1 and 2 is like the difference between pre-1.3 and post-1.3 textures in No Man's Sky. 1 looks like wood, but 2 looks like it's supposed to be wood. 3 looks like wood but the effect is ruined by the visible plastic that tell the viewer that it's not wood.

To me, it's all about whether it makes the thing look like it's legitimately made of wood, versus having a "fake wood" veneer. Looks "real" = cool; looks "fake" = cringe. Again, this is all just my own opinion. This is descriptive of my preferences, NOT prescriptive of what yours should be.

some guesses...

Re: music links as part of the wakingtitan.com info ... "Superluminal velocity: The apparent velocity of an object at speeds greater than the speed of light. " (FTL) Maybe we get the ability to FTL to another universe in the multiverse.

"Echo" may refer to caves/underground and cross-connect with the seemingly referenced "Ruins of Mars: Waking Titan" book -- Book 2 of a 3-book series, where ruins were underground.

Multiverse. If you subscribe at wakingtitan.com, you get an email from "Old Gods" -- plural. Atlas was one of several Titans. Perhaps the others will be in another part of the multiverse and the next update will give us ways to "get there." Pure speculation, but it's really fun.

Links related to Waking Titan...

Isn't it a bit unusual that each of the links to music have a number in them. Wait ... :) one has "6c" ... oooo ... some Hexed text? 65-6c-64-75-70. That almost looks like a network address. Or maybe they are all together: 656c467570 or broken up differently. And maybe either the titles or lyrics to the linked songs hold import.

Damn! This is very clever.

I'm wondering ... 16 tapes, but 15 icons at wakingtitan.com. The icons don't let you proceed all at once. You have to wait for a station to broadcast, for example. So maybe we get 15 different days of these clues to puzzle out, then update day is #16. Just a thought.

I am planning to get something like this one :
Just to add ventilation in the cabinet not changing the console. I just need to make sure the fan moves the hot air out.

That is the future. Right there. Oh... maybe some political stuff might be different, and I think the tech will actually be better than in the book - unless we blow ourselves up, or suffer an economic apocalypse - I am convinced that the gaming life in this book is what we will see and experience.

u/DeJeR · 3 pointsr/NoMansSkyTheGame

Just to start the thread of Ready Player One love.

I realize there is a ton of fantastic sci-fi out there, but this book has stuck with me more than any other book in my collection.
