A bit of a novel, but I hope you find this helpful, OP.
First, to comment on what happened on your call with Microsoft: maybe it's possible you just got one of the really bad reps? But then again, they got a supervisor involved and they still wouldn't just fix the situation for you? Especially seeing as you hadn't even used your subscription... that is pretty ridiculous. Well, I'm confident that you'll find the PlayStation experience an enjoyable one.
-----
Honestly, this is probably the best time to try out a PS3. We're closing out on this generation of consoles and some of the best games of the last few years have been PlayStation exclusives. Especially if you've been using an Xbox 360 this whole time, you're about ready to meet a whole new world of incredible titles.
Quick edit: Just wanted to clarify... I'm including links to Amazon just as an easy way for you to learn more about individual titles. But just as /u/undeadwolfy mentioned:
>You can buy most of these pre-owned at a decent price. Some are digital so they're not much cheaper but still great.
So first and foremost, I highly recommend anything by Naughty Dog -- they are arguably the best developer in the entire industry right now. They released four titles on the PS3: Uncharted 1, 2 & 3 (each game is a must-play), and the absolute masterpiece that is The Last of Us. You've probably heard plenty of praise for The Last of Us (and it is well deserved), but I would recommend saving the best for last. It's such an awesome game that, after completing it, nothing else I played interested me anymore. It took like a month to get back into the gaming groove, so I'd save that 'til after you beat the Uncharted trilogy. It's that good.
Aside from that, there are some other great titles I'd highly recommend. I don't know what kind of games you're into, so I'll just list all those that I've liked, personally:
Not to mention plenty of other great exclusives (Rachet & Clank series, Resistance trilogy, Valkyria Chronicles and more) and the tons of PS1 and PS2 games on the PlayStation Store for cheap, playable on your PS3 if you want to go old school. (Not to mention the many PS2 games being rereleased for PS3 in HD glory... I'd recommend Shadow of the Colossus, which happens to be free for PlayStation Plus members this month... hint hint.) Of course, all the multiplatform games are also here (Battlefield, Bioshock, Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, etc.).
That said, however, if you really want to jump in the game, PlayStation Plus is worth every penny -- a ton of free games each month (and we're talking major titles, in addition to a handful of indies), plus a large variety of other system-enhancing features and discounts. And if you're looking at getting a PS4, getting PS+ is a no-brainer. For one, it is required for online multiplayer on the PS4 (no such requirement on the PS3, but hey, they've got to make their money somehow). But what's awesome is that one PS+ account will work across both the PS3 & PS4, and enable you to get free games for each console for as long as you are a subscriber, with free games on the PS4 appearing on day one.
Welcome to the new age. Now cue up some Imagine Dragons and get ready for a freaking awesome experience. We're glad to have you.
The previous posts have covered the exclusive PS3 collections pretty well so I'll focus on multiplatform ones. Several of these are a bit rarer since they seem to have come out later on and (maybe?) don't have as many copies out in the wild. Also, check out Glyde - they have a lot of great games for cheap, and all the games I've bought from them have been in better than advertised condition. Their shipping is quite slow though.
Ultimate Action Triple Pack - Sleeping Dogs, Just Cause 2, Tomb Raider. Great games here, and I've beaten all of them. If you like action check it out.
Ultimate Stealth Triple Pack - Thief, Hitman Absolution, Deus Ex Human Revolution. Not played any of these as I dislike stealth but you may enjoy them.
Bioshock Trilogy - You have two options here depending on how much you like the series (and DLC). Bioshock Infinite black label copies (not the Greatest Hits ones) say on the box that they include Bioshock 1 on the disc, so you can either buy a copy of Infinite (+ Bioshock) then get a base game copy of Bioshock 2. You could even combine this with the 2K Power Pack and get Mafia II and Darkness II. Not played Darkness II but Mafia II is really good. The more expensive way (but you get the DLC which for 2 and Infinite is really good and helps to tie up the story really well) would be to buy a copy of the Bioshock Ultimate Rapture Edition that includes 1 + 2 and all DLC, then buy a Bioshock Infinite Complete Edition copy. Regardless of which option you choose, make sure to play the games in release order.
2K Essentials Collection (Bioshock 1, XCOM, Borderlands). Only game I'm personally interested in here is Bioshock but YMMV.
About the only other one I can think of is the Mass Effect Trilogy, which is pretty highly rated (and the only way to get a copy of Mass Effect 1 physically for the PS3) but it's out of your budget for now.
Did you like X-COM from 2012? It plays a good bit like it, so if you enjoyed that style gameplay you'd like VC. It also has some visual novel-like parts that are pretty nice, and has a really good cel-shaded art style. It's a great game, especially since you can pick it up for very cheap.
oh man let me show you something that will be your best friend for the controller. Just get them. http://www.amazon.com/Dual-Triggers-Playstation-3-PS3--Black/dp/B003S6RI2G/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1319567610&sr=8-1-fkmr0 comign fom the 360 it's great. Well just do regular cleaning on it it will be fine. I mean get some compressed air and blow it out a couple times. And if you have a marathon gaming session be sure to turn your system off for a bit and let it rest. I think if you've played for like 4 hours let it rest for like 45 minutes.
as far as pre-owned goes, your best bet would be Batman AA or GoW III, i'm pretty sure you can find them on amazon new at those prices as well.
found them, AA, GoW
even some older games like Mirror's Edge, Bioshock 1/2 are great purchases.
if you are into very challenging games, you can't go wrong with Demon's Souls
If you've been primarily gaming on the 360 up until now, it can take a little bit to get used to the PS3 controller. I also had the same issue. The fatigue issues go away pretty quick though.
As someone who also primarily played 360 before I got my ps3, I would highly recommend you get trigger extensions asap. They make the controller much more comfortable.
While linking accessories, I would also recommend a magnetized controller charge pad. I can't tell you how nice it is to be able to just lay the controller down and have it auto charged. No need to remember to plug it in, or even use a usb port.
It may sound strange that I am recommending a charging pad in response to your post. However, there is a reason! The magnetic charging pad attachment adds a little extra weight to the PS3 controller. Everyone that comes by to play games always comments how much nicer my controllers feel between the slightly heavier feel and added triggers.
Well, Newegg has em for $40 and the last time I checked, Best buy had a bundle of GoW/Uncharted 1+2 with a controller.
Edit: Just got an e-mail from Amazon so here's some third-party controller deals.
Splitfish Dual SFX Evolution Wireless Controller for just $23. I own one and it works pretty good, no dead zones but the button layouts feels awkward. Rapidfire was fun to use, only tried it on Mass Effect 3 though. It feels like a monster when you hold it btw. Here's the video review of it.
HKS Racing Controller for $36.09. This is strictly for racing games and I've never really tried it. HKS Racing Controller Review.
PS3 Eagle Eye Mouse and Keyboard Converter which is $49.88. I know you don't want to shell out too much money but if you want to play the PS3 with a keyboard + mouse, then here ya go. You can also check out the Tactical Assault Commander 3 but I wouldn't recommend it. Eagle Eye PS3 Review. Btw, if you do get the Eagle Eye, expect playing it like this. A better demonstration of Eagle Eye.
Play n Type Wireless Controller with Keypad for $38.03. I seriously don't like this controller, it looks terrible. Just get the official wireless keypad. It's like, what, $21 on Amazon? Here's the review of it, no such video demonstrating the actual typing though.
You can also check the third party controllers in Gamestop or Bestbuy like afterglow but I totally wouldn't recommend it. Like seriously. Shit's so bright even in daylight.
>he drive doesn't have to be an official Sony one right?
Nope, it can be any laptop HDD! Has to be 9.5mm though! Most are, but some 1TB might be 12mm and those wont fit.
I am using the WD Black 7200RPM 750GB
http://www.amazon.com/Black-250-Mobile-Hard-Drive/dp/B001CO3EKG
You could also get a cheaper 5400RPM drive (That type is in PS3 stock) or 5400 and something bigger like
http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Momentus-2-5-Inch-Internal-Notebook/dp/B007PG25UU/ref=sr_1_7?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1372845305&sr=1-7&keywords=seagate+momentus
or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148371
But seeing as something like
http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Momentus-Internal-Notebook-ST9750420AS/dp/B004MME0N0/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1372845305&sr=1-3&keywords=seagate+momentus
is not that much more expensive I would not go below 500GB.
Do NOT get the WD Blue series for PS3. From what I read when I was upgrading mine they have a too aggressive head parking "feature" to save power so the head parks and takes a while to spin up again.
Meh... Both 70 and 50 bucks as suggested in comments is a lot.
Buy something like this, connect the classical (not HDMI one) cord to PS3, connect audio cinches with that converter and plug any headphones without microphone you can find (I use ones that cost like 10 bucks). You need to select audio output to the regular cable, not HDMI, in the PS3 menu but that's a piece of cake ;).
I'm really surprised at how terrible advice you guyz are giving him. I mean, 40-50 bucks just to use headphones on PS3? It's ok if he wants to invest 40-50 bucks but if he wants it to be as cheap as possible, this is a very easy solution.
Edit: Now, you will need both RCA (cinches) females and headphone jack female. I can't find this option on amazon at the moment but you can do with female cinches and male jack as long as you buy female-female jack connector.
Oh, I just made a new thread about this without seeing yours. Here's what I posted in that one:
I'm looking at buying another PS3 and I've been checking around online. The best deals on new Slim consoles I've found so far are these:
320 GB Slim + PS Move on Amazon for $300:
The price keeps fluctuating on this one, but I've seen it as low as $302 recently.
Target's 320GB + MW3 bundle:
$269
WalMart's bundle:
Select the 160GB w/ extra controller for $259 bundle, select one of the 320GB bundles (MW3 or Uncharted 3) for $50 extra. So it's a 320GB bundle plus an extra DualShock for $309, and you can add in some GreatestHits titles for $10 a pop.
Any other good deals on PS3 consoles out there?
It seems like the retailers might be trying to sell off their stocks. Might there be a new bundle coming out, or is the PS3 slowly dying? With so many primo titles in the $20-40 range, now's a great time to get a PS3.
The GOTY is worth it if you end up liking the game, it does expand the game a looooot more. This deal contains the whole borderlands collection (With the exception of Tales), in addition it also comes with all of the DLC available for the 3 games.
Play the vanilla version first and see if you end up liking it, although at ~$25 (with tax) the triple pack is a great deal.
you are on the right track for sure. all you need is that video capture card and this is the most highest recommended HDCP splitter. I bought a cheap hdmi splitter that didn't do the job right and this one worked a treat.
this thing and the capture card is all you should need
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004F9LVXC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
best of luck
Unless motion control and backwards compatibility are a big deal for you think about checking out one of these to use with a Dualshock 4.
Magic-NS Wireless PS3/4,... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079B5KHWQ?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf
They work great with all "PS3" games but motion control doesn't work with it.
Grab one of those and a PS4 controller and that's the best way to get a brand new first party controller for PS3.
that drive would work, but honestly, if you spend $25 more, you can get a way nicer drive:
http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Momentus-Internal-Notebook-ST9750420AS/dp/B004MME0N0
750GB (not 320GB), NEW (not refurbished), 7200 RPM (not 5400 RPM) drive.
or for even better performance, spend a $1.50 more and get the 500GB hybrid drive:
http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Momentus-Solid-Hybrid-ST95005620AS/dp/B003NSBF32/
that's the one I am using.
The official PS3 wireless headset is far and away one of the best values for the money out there at around $100. Great sound, extremely comfortable, 7 hour battery life. If you don't want to spend that much I'd go with the either the Turtle Beach P11 or the PX21. Both are in the $50-$60 range but are also wired. But in all honesty I can't recommend SONY's wireless 7.1 headset highly enough.
There are users reporting that an SSD greatly improved their load times and such, especially in games like Skyrim. I don't think hybrid drives are worth it, I'd either go with regular HDD or SSD if you want to spend extra money (but get less storage).
5400/7200 rpm probably won't matter if you go HDD. I think initial drives for PS3s are 5400.
If you want a simple HDD this is my recommendation. Cheap and will get the job done.
If you want an SSD this is a very solid option.
From what I researched online this is the biggest drive you can get that will fit fat or slim. They do have faster models though that cost more. Sounded like they would cause your PS3 to over heat if you went with the quicker drives.
Here's what I just purchased last week from amazon. Working great so far for me.
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0053YLTBC/ref=pe_175190_21431760_3p_M3T1_ST1_dp_1
Bioshock is an FPS with a great storyline. Borderlands is also a good FPS with a much less good story. But hey, why not both?
/u/abs_boxing_tv .
i say ditch the dualshock 3 all-together.
it's hard to find official ones in decent condition now a days.
what i do is use a dualshock 4 (ps4 controller), with these little mods:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mayflash-Magic-NS-Wireless-Controller-Nintendo/dp/B079B5KHWQ
this lets you use ps4/xb1/xb30/nintendo-switch-pro controllers on the ps3 with full functionality. (such as rumbles/vibration and accessing the PS menu button).
you can still use the ps4 controller on ps3 without this adapter, but the 2 mentioned features will be MIA, along with random disconnects.
https://battlebeavercustoms.com/collections/ps4-thumbsticks/products/ps4-domed-style-replacement-thumbsticks?variant=831396239
they ship to UK, but it might not be worth paying extra shipping just for a simple piece of product. you can probably find domed thumbsticks for cheaper on ebay. Just make sure they are DOMED (which is what ps3 controller sticks are), and compatible with dualshock 4.
no matter what controller or mods you use, it will take some time to get used to, especially with a thumbstick-heavy game such as Fight Night Champion.
but in the end, i ended up liking this setup better for FNC than the original ps3 controller.
thanks to /u/kryp2nitev8 for this advice.
Yeah, I actually traded my old fat ps3 with partial ps2 compatibility for a slim ps3 just for this.
I still ended up using this remote though, it's nice because it has bluetooth for the PS3 and the other inputs are fully programmable. Even with that it's nice to be able to control the PS3 with either the bluetooth or with IR through the TV.
You can always look for and buy a physical copy. Borderlands Triple Pack would be the best deal. I think it includes all DLC as well.
these are pretty good, never had any major problems with them, work on PC too.
If you're willing to splash another tenner, you could get the upgraded versions
Edit: i noticed you said dollars, meaning you're in America.
Sorry about that, but those headsets are from a decent brand, and are fairly good.
If you're planning on getting a PS3, and you're okay with/want Move, buy the this one, it's the best bang for your buck.
Also, with rumors of the PS3 Super-Slim still floating around, I'd wait a little while before getting a PS3.
Pick up a product like Eagle Eye
I have heard good things about them
I just ordered this one today. It has good reviews. I will repost when it arrives if you like.
but if I got something like this I can just kind of plug and play?
what'd you pay for the system, and what kind?
first, before you buy anymore games, i strongly suggest you get a FREE amazon Prime subscription. don't know how? sign up at any community college, DO NOT register for classes, you are only doing this to get a ".edu" email address. use the .edu to register for an amazon prime account.
i'm not a fan of red dead redemption, though i loved red dead. also the mass effect series was one i had a hard time catching on to. rather than rank by number, i'll just put an asterisk next to my top choices.
This is the one that I use, and it has worked out great for me:

Yup, I bought mine from Amazon, and it works great.
I've had this one in my Slim since about June last year:

Not sure where you're located, but maybe look up that model with the stores you regularly use? I know a lot of people on the official PS3 EU forums use the same model. They recommended it to me in the first place. ;)

That one. It was recommended by another redditor I believe. Works quite well.
I also have a set of Tritton AX720's and they are the nicest headset I have ever owned. I previously had the Turtle Beach P21's and they were not nearly as comfortable as the Tritton set, even though the Tritton one is heavier. The P21s also had a super annoying hissing sound when the volume wasn't even turned up that high.
Yeah, the Trittons are $50 more, but it's money well-spent IMHO.
Amazon wasn't nearly as kind as I thought. Their only 160GB bundle that isn't exorbitantly higher than other retailers (seriously, how do they get away with this) is that Harry Potter Blu-Ray bundle, and the person I'd be getting this for would likely be very ambivalent about receiving that.
Apparently this one works at stripping HDCP: http://www.amazon.com/ViewHD-Port-Powered-Splitter-1080P/dp/B004F9LVXC
It's the one i purchased, so when it arrives i'll tell you if it's true.
If you have a blue line in port on your laptop, you can get an adapter [like this] ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0018MI5F6?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00 ) and plug the red and white plugs from the PS3 AV cable into the respective female ends on the adapter going into the line in on the laptop.
You then have to go into the sound settings on your PS3 and choose to output audio to the AV. You may also have to turn on the playback audio from the line in port using Realtek HD audio manager on your PC.
This is how I personally do it with my desktop PC and PS3.
it wont work you have to remove the hdcp with something like this. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004F9LVXC/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Hey dude I ordered this hard drive from amazon it works fine so far for my 80 gb ps3 :P. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00C9TECFO/ref=shptrk_scth
Well, these were my last two options: this and this
Before I got the HDMI cable I did manage to program the AUX on my Bravia remote to partially control my Onkyo. But the problem was it wouldn't power it off only on. Its something to do with the universal codes. You could give that a shot, if that doesn't work the remote Nabrok referenced may be a good option for you. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002LARYGA/ref=cm_sw_su_dp
I'm thinking about getting one myself even though I don't really need it purely for the Blutooth option. Woo no line of sight!
I use an Elgato HD60. Your going to need an HDMI 1x2 splitter to remove the HDCP like this one as well.
Well you can shell out $60 and use this.
If you already have a PS4 controller, get one of these. It lets you use any controller (including the PS4 controller) on the PS3 without making some features like the PS button not work & it lets you use them wireless with vibration. Even games that don't support PS4 controllers will work with this adapter. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079B5KHWQ/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_OsZcBbM816X4J
Nope he was paying attention. $50, all digital content (even collector's stuff), all on disc, for all three games.
I snagged one for Christmas and I've been playing it since.
your best bet is to get this dongle: https://www.amazon.com/Mayflash-Magic-NS-Wireless-Controller-Nintendo/dp/B079B5KHWQ and use a DS4. It works flawlessly for me on my PS3 and I don't have to worry about fake or broken controllers.
Here it is. I bought it off of Amazon.com, not Newegg. Sorry.

You may be able to connect your headset to the monitor with one of these: 3.5mm to RCA female
I ran one of these to the line-in on my computer and set HDMI for video on the PS3 and Audio Input Connector / SCART / AV MULTI for the audio.
your receiver doesnt have RCA inputs? or are you using desktop speakers?
either way:
amazon
Valkyria Chronicles
This one?
Mayflash Magic-NS Wireless Controller Adapter for Nintendo Switch PC NEOGEO mini https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079B5KHWQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_fnk7CbRC39XT8
Can you turn on the console wirelessly?
I use this and the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, this has changed my PS3 gaming immensely.
I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on this
http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Drives-Notebook-WD5000LPVX/dp/B00C9TECFO/ref=lh_ni_t?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
just buy the adapter and use your pc stuff ?

can i use this with this to back up my 160 gb hdd?
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004F9LVXC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
this is what i use to stream rocksmith and other games with my hd 60s. never had an issue with it besides forgetting to plug it in!
1TB HDD
It does, you just need a specific HDMI splitter (I'm a Let's Player)
https://www.amazon.com/ViewHD-Powered-Splitter-1080P-VHD-1X2MN3D/dp/B004F9LVXC
You're gonna want a powered splitter, I have this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004F9LVXC/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i02?ie=UTF8&psc=1
And it works fine. I use it on a monitor, and a television with noticeable extra lag.
There is no console on the market today that allows the end user to swap out, install, or otherwise upgrade the memory of the system.
As for STORAGE, you can easily upgrade the HDD in the PS3. More easily than even possible on the Xbox. $44 will get you a 500 GB HDD that you can install into your PS3.
A 12 GB HDD will not work well at all, simply because you have to install nearly every game to the HDD on PS. That sucker will fill up fast.
Oh and every modern PS3 is equipped with WiFi and an Ethernet IO port.
