If you don't have good headphones or play with sound, do that. The audio in the game is really helpful for hearing max's stomp around to an infiltrator uncloaking behind you. And with a good pair of headphones you should be able to pinpoint exactly where the sound is coming from. I personally use these and these.
My favorite Sci-Fi saga is Deathstalker by Simon R. Green, and it has an amazing audio production where everyone is voiced by different voices, and there is music and sound effects instead of just a single narrator doing all the voices. It is quite long though, much longer than most of the series' I've been through.
If you are looking for a laptop look no further!

I play PS2 on that nearly every day. Great laptop. It has an m.2 drive in it so you can put a SATA drive in it as well for additional storage. I have an Samsung 850 Pro SSD (SATA) in that slot and have all my games and stuff on that and use the m.2 drive the OS is on for OS stuff
maybe this adapter
Entirely worth the cost if you wanna play seriously and competitively. I'd consider one, but I'd rather save up for a PC because consoles kinda lost their allure for me.
It's supposed to be compatible with this Playstation Move Navigation Controller as well so you can keep analog foot movement, if you want.
It's no different than investing in a steering wheel for a racing game. Analog sticks just aren't very good for precision. Consoles are so similar to PCs now, they should just support M&KB by default to give players more options.
So on the recommendation of the Cobalt reddit community, I bought a new mouse to improve my aim, and my KD.
Join me as I unbox this beast of a mouse and take it for a spin.

Something like this. I really like the wrist rest, is much more comfortable. Doesn't work for people that like to have low sensitivity and move their hand a lot, but I've never been one of those.
>If the player so desired to do it
How is that different than using Recursion (or another overlay)? It isn't the default, so you have to go out of your way to set it up that way. There are also 11 other buttons (12 on my mouse) to account for. The goal is one handed operation for a bunch of different things. You can't one handed switch to your secondary while also squad chatting, strafing, and firing without having specialized hardware like a mouse with extra buttons.
It gives me an "unfair" advantage because I have specialized gear to do a custom job for me. I also use the Razer Tartarus, which gives me a ton of programmable buttons that no one else has unless they also have specialized hardware. It further helps me to multitask and split up jobs to different fingers that I wouldn't have otherwise.
I don't feel that these give me an advantage that is able to be calculated. Sometimes I goof up and pull out my med tool instead of my sidearm, because the buttons are small on my mouse. As nice as an overlay for 3rd person gunning would be, I don't feel that they would give a calculable advantage over someone with no overlay. That's the reason I even brought up the hardware, which you said yourself doesn't give an advantage.

This is the one I just got, it seems pretty good so far.
I have a Asus ROG G751JY, a couple of years old gaming laptop. It has i7-4720HQ, GTX980M and SSD. I run PS2 pretty consistently 70+ fps up to over 100 in smaller fights. On mostly potato settings of course.
Pros:
Cons:
I know this is a money thing, but a mouse with thumb buttons is so fantastic for this game. I have prox chat, squad chat, platoon chat, teamspeak, ability (F), and reload bound to thumb buttons on my mouse. It helps out more than I can express.
I also can't recommend this mouse enough, if you don't mind wireless (sensor on this thing is great!)
My build, for comparison purposes:
i5-4670k (OC'd to 4.0), 8 GB RAM (1600 mhz), GeForce GTX 780 3GB, and PS2 has it's own dedicated SSD. Last,
but not least, my monitors are two Asus VS247H-P as seen here http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005BZNDS0
Side Note: I used to run an RadeonHD card and ironically, dollar for dollar, got waaaay better performance
(for the price) than I do for my current nvidia. There are definitely diminishing returns IRT higher end video
cards.
Summary: I can run everything at its highest setting and achieve roughly 40-60 FPS in 24-48 battles. In
96+ battles, my FPS is roughly 25-50. I choose not to run everything at its highest setting for performance
reasons.
My actual, current settings: http://i.imgur.com/tNbbZ92.png
1) Determine what is most important for you: the gameplay or the graphics. You will find that many high-
skill players with beast rigs run PS2 at very low settings because--for them--the game is the thing. The
graphics are secondary. Some would make the game look like MineCraft if it helped.
2) Understand that what we call FPS is integrally tied to your monitor. The vast majority of current
monitors (such as mine) have vertical refreshes of 60hz. This means that the absolute most frames per second
my monitor can display is 60. Even if I get 200 FPS, my monitor will only show 60. Side Note: my monitor is
actually only capable of displaying about 56'ish FPS, because the monitor response time is 2ms. Response time
is how fast it takes your monitor to actually process the frames it receives. To achieve actual 60 FPS, my
monitor would need a "real time" response time.
3) Understand that your FPS in PS2 is a ping-pong game between your CPU and your GPU. By using CTRL-F10 in
game you can toggle on your FPS counter in the lower left corner.
Note in this pic at the warpgate: http://i.imgur.com/AKhw9l0.png it shows a "GPU" next to my FPS. This means that my FPS is hitting the limits of the video card (my CPU isn't holding back the FPS).
However, in this pic, in a 1-12 contested battle: http://i.imgur.com/ePp7DmM.png you'll see it shows my CPU as being the limiting factor. Having a beefier video card would be irrelevant. This is because out on the battlefield, my CPU has so much work to do processing bullets flying, damage taken, motion detector pings, etc.
Optimizing For Me: How I arrived at my current settings was due to my consideration that gameplay was king (goodbye flora!). Knowing that my monitor was capable of only displaying roughly 60 FPS, I aimed to kick my settings as high as possible, yet low enough that I can get 55+ FPS in even the most massive engagements. Hence my current settings.
Optimizing For You: Take 20 mins and experiment with all the settings and see what you can get. Assuming gameplay is king for you, set your Overall Quality to Very Low and Render Distance to 600. Using Fullscreen (as opposed to Fullscreen Windowed) seems to give some folks an 5-10 FPS boost when using a single monitor. It does nothing for me personally, but it can't hurt to try. Then, after you are in-game, bring up Windows Task Manager, go to Details/Processes and find your Planetside...exe process. Right-click and set priority to HIGH. See what FPS you get at WG and what FPS you get in massive battles at different bases (not all bases are created equal IRT FPS). If you get greatly in excess of 60 FPS, then consider increasing different graphics options (because your monitor won't be using those extra FPS anyways).
Things that produce the greatest FPS gain:
Turning shadows off.
Render Quality (huge FPS boost).
Render Distance.
Using Fullscreen mode and changing your display resolution.
Graphics Quality toggle (huge FPS boost).
Turning Fog Shadows and Ambient Occlusion off.
Things that seem to do almost nothing in of themselves:
Lighting Quality (always set to low).
Model Quality (always set to low).
> A Pentium G3258 along with an aftermarket CPU cooler will give you the best bang for your buck in this game, provided you overclock it. It sounds like you've either got a very low end CPU or one that isn't good for gaming (can't be overclocked, has lots of cores but low single threaded performance, etc.).
I agree with SharkSpider 100%. The G3258 might be considered entry-level, but it would still handily crush the fastest Core2Quad chip by any metric, and Planetside 2 doesn't heavily benefit from multi-threading currently. £53.93 at Amazon.co.uk, but a local retailer may have one for a similar price. A basic motherboard like the Asus H81M-D can be had for £45.57. Assuming you're already running DDR3 memory then you won't need to upgrade anything else.
As others have said, your GPU is fine.

this is a stick and throttle combo for 30-35 bucks and I love mine, it also separates if you want them to be further apart. (also for people that have a ps3 there is a switch to make it compatible)

Buy these. Also this and this, and don't forget these.
Rent this.
Drive around Vegas saying things like "Oh god... did you eat all this acid?" and "You people just don't understand! This car is property of the World Bank, that money goes to Italy!"
This one is pretty cheap and works well.
Don't use a laser mouse for fps games, it's not a good idea, the sensors have acceleration issues.
If you use high sensitivity and want a cheap mouse, something like this might interest you.
