I buy my supplies on Amazon. (I loathe shopping with a passion, so online for me - even Peapod for groceries.) My elder guy will ONLY eat Oxbow Orchard Grass Hay so my choices are more limited. Amazon also has very good deals on Care Fresh bedding and both the Oxbow and the Care Fresh are Prime.

For the housing, cages are WAY too expensive in my opinion. This has been a great solution for us. I cooked up this system when my elder gal was paralyzed and not able to use the litter box as well as she used to. We also needed a "squishy" floor for her and Poncho's arthritis.

First layer (on top of hardwood floor): Whelping Mat - get a few to rotate. They wash up great in the laundry and we actually also use these for camping. They're soft but do absorb water (mine splash in their water dish more than drink it) and dry quickly.

Second Layer: Rubber Mats - they have these at our gym. THEY ARE AWESOME. We got a set of 6 for the rabbit area and then I bought 12 more for our workout / weights / stretching area. They clean up great with some of this Seventh Generation Spray - this spray was recommended by the coach at our kettlebell gym - it disinfects without the use of harsh chemicals or antibiotics so it's much safer for bunnies AND people. This stuff is awesome for cleaning ANYTHING.

Then we put some carpet squares, a huge "litterbox" (I use a low 24" x 36" rubbermaid w/o the lid - much better & cheaper than a "real" litter box. Oh, and of course toys.

There are all kinds of Puppy Play Pens on Amazon too. Look for Prime so you don't have to pay to ship it. If you have an enthusiastic young bunny, get the 48" H pen. It seems excessive, but my parents had a 3.5 pound little dude who could EASILY hurdle the 36"H one.

I have also used the Whelping Mats (there are smaller size ones) on top of the rubber tiles and under the litter pan to collect any "misses" - our boy bunny likes to "aim high" and overshoots sometimes.

Overall, it's very customize-able, portable, and MUCH MUCH easier to clean.

We have a dust buster ($27 for a wet/dry on Amazon) that's AWESOME for picking up stray pills, pellets and hay. Just save some chopsticks from takeout to clean them out when they get stuck inside. Do you think that would help?

Molly LOOOOVES the cool terrazzo floor in our place - she doesn't like to run on them as much though she'll explore, she's a curious lady. She just flops on the slippery surface and then watching her try to get up again is hilarious.

It looks like an awesome setup for him and it's clearly working for you too. Yay! Thanks for the update.

I go by the rule, not enough room for a cat=not enough room for a rabbit.

I used about 8 of these to make a huge pen that keeps them from all the dangerous wires and chewing the walls, keep them together with zip ties. These are nice because you can do any size, shape and height you want. (I also went and ordered a couple more that I haven’t needed yet because back ups seemed like a good idea if I felt inspired to make it bigger in a whim)

storage cubes

I have this litter box(pricey but worth it)

litter box/feeder

And two of these water dishes because the bottles aren’t as easy for rabbits to drink from. These are non flip and very nice.

bowls

Hope this helps.

Edit: I use the storage cubes to make walls but not levels or tops to the pens, I space big enough to frolick in better than having a place to go upwards.

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/Rabbits

It sounds like you have it figured out.

My only suggestion would be to get a better cage/pen. A cage small enough to fit on a standard dresser would not be large enough for a rabbit that will be alone, and in the cage, for large parts of the day (which I am assuming he will, since you will be at school or sleeping for most of the day). Also, most commercially available, indoor rabbit cages are not nearly large enough for bunnies. The ones that are designed for outdoors, such as hutches, can be plenty large, but have wire bottoms which is terrible for bunny feet.

If you were to get a sturdy expen, which will cost you a bit of money, it will probably be Lhasa Apso proof. Since many ex pens are actually designed to keep doggies inside, they are probably able to keep a well trained, small, dog out.

Just make sure he has enough space to jump and run about a bit while you are gone, and enough toys to keep him busy.

I've got mine in a large IRIS pen, which keeps my black labs out. Something like this, with one of the expanders, would allow you to build a nice, 2'x4' ex pen that is very, very, strong, and big enough for your bun.

u/DinkaAnimalLover · 2 pointsr/Rabbits

I might suggest just purchasing this xpen https://www.amazon.com/MidWest-Foldable-Metal-Exercise-Playpen/dp/B000H8YTJI or these storage cubes https://www.amazon.com/LANGRIA-Storage-Organizer-Products-Portable/dp/B06XR71YW1?ref_=w_bl_hsx_s_ho_web_13643573011 or even this if you are really short on space https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0098L1Z9C/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. These could be use temporarily now and even after you move...

But if you absolutely can't maybe just remove the ramps... you don't want the bunny falling off, it has happened and could lead to really bad things - not worth the risk since ferret cages are built much higher up. You could use self adhesive carpet squares to make it grippy, but I think it is honestly dangerous. You clearly love your baby a lot and I just want him to be safe. :) I hope you don't take any of the advice the wrong way....

u/sirbearus · 1 pointr/Rabbits

Thank you all again for the great suggestions. In the end this is what I bought.
Regalo Easy Step Walk Thru Gate, White, Fits Spaces between 29" and 39" Wide
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001OC5UMQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1
It was super easy to put up and the buns are too big to get through the slats.

u/mcKempt · 3 pointsr/Rabbits

So I got this for her cage: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XTWZ857/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It arrives in 2 days. I realized her cage is extremely small for her size so I had to get something large enough that was cheap since the spay she's getting on Friday already is costing me a nice chunk. I can get more stuff next month (I have to buy college books later in the month so I'm like mega broke as it is)

As well as some fleece blankets. I was planning on doing bowls for water and kibble, with trays for timothy hay. Is that stuff ok?

I think she is a Netherland Dwarf? Perhaps around a year of age? My sister bought her from a pet store like 1.5 months ago on sale with no documents. If anyone can I.D. that would help me a lot! She weighs 2.8 pounds when I used a human scale.

She doesn't really have a name. I've just been ironically calling her 'Bunny'.

Edit: Should also note that I've been letting her free roam for about 8 hours today (she just came home with me last night) and has been pretty curious about my cats. No problems so far with the kitties; they seem to enjoy the 'new meat' lol (I'm kidding, they seem to like her)

Second Edit: Also, anyone have any sort of product they recommend for cord protection? I was looking at 'CritterCord' on Amazon but it seems like bunnies ate through those anyways. Should taping on the wall work?

u/speakstruth · 2 pointsr/Rabbits

I also really love xpens. I didn't see any negative reviews on this one about welding. You might want to consider a plastic one though if you're worried. :)

How big is the room? It might be more cost efficient for you to get a roll of chicken wire and brace it with some boxes.

If your living room has carpet for flooring, I'd also lay down some tarp or plastic under whatever divider you use since your current bunny may start peeing along it to mark her "territory." Baby bunnies are generally friendly with all other bunnies though so you probably don't have to worry about aggression from them too much. Do you know their genders yet?

u/triggerscold · 2 pointsr/Rabbits

my bun pretty much doesnt like anything. baby keys, tp tubes, cardboard, slinky etcetc. we have tried them all. when we give her wicker balls they are destroyed in under 5 min. when we give her the stimulation puzzles or cups shes done with it in under 30 seconds.

what has been working to get our bun playing around is:

a cardboard box filled about half way with shredded paper. we sprinkle in a few pellets and she will dig around for a while.

a drink carrier with a few pellets sprinkled into it. makes her work for them.

a cardboard tunnel maze setup that was easy enough to build and she will play in it for longer than 5 minutes.https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07Q14MY9L/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

bamboo has worked well at getting our bun to chew without letting her chew on things she shouldnt be eating.https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01NAQFWGE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

our bun is only motivated by food she doesnt play for the sake of play most of the time. other than the maze which she has recently just taken to chilling inside.

u/SuckinLemonz · 1 pointr/Rabbits

It is not the best situation, but if you get them a sun-lamp (sold as "SAD lights" on amazon) or "full spectrum light bulbs", that will help a LOT. If you get the sun lamp, be sure to protect the cord so they can't chew it. Also, you can get multi-vitamins from oxbow and those will help too.

You can also get a portable play pen to set up outside for a few hours every day so they can have sunlight. Make sure to get one with a top AND bottom so that they don't escape or get attacked by animals.

u/NettlesRossart · 2 pointsr/Rabbits

For my two buns, I got a large gardening tray from amazon. It's about 20x25, in 6 inches deep in the back, but only an inch deep in the front. They can walk easily (they are lazy and will pee next to boxes that are high). It was maybe $22. Best litter box I've ever had

I found it through amazon, while looking for a litterbox with low sides. All I could find were dog boxes (meant for puppy pee pads), when I came upon these. I bought the more expensive one ($29, the other is $18), sine it is nice and big for two bunnies. I spent at least that on three for four litter boxes over the past year trying to find one they liked that they wouldn't destroy. This one is super heavy plastic.

I have a small and a large of these:

https://www.amazon.com/ESK-Collection-Playpen-Exercise-Kennel/dp/B00SFA8KBS/ref=mp_s_a_1_9?keywords=dog%2Bpen&qid=1564278473&s=gateway&sr=8-9&th=1&psc=1

Easy for travel too! They have zip tops, and fit into a slim carry bag. I’ve had them for 5 years now, and they’re as good as new if a bit dirtier!

u/iliketobake · 2 pointsr/Rabbits

Bunnies are pretty easy to please. My bugs also love toilet paper rolls (stuffed with hay!) or just about anything else they can destroy. You don't have to spend a lot of money to make your little bunny happy!

I get something similar to these from my local rabbit rescue and the buggers DEVOUR it! I also buy plain, untreated apple wood blocks/branches at my local farmer's market later on in the season. They sell it for making fires, but I buy it for them to eat.

u/tinycatface · 2 pointsr/Rabbits

I like this one for my one dwarf rabbit but also have this one at my partner's house when the bun is staying over there. I got the large for the second one, FYI - the others are a bit small.

Both are big enough for my bun to run laps, hop about and binky - the one without a bottom is more customizable but the other is easier to store and travel with.

u/aaahmanduh · 6 pointsr/Rabbits

They're made from wire storage cubes like this. and zip-ties. They're excellent for making play pens too!

u/apandadrinkingmilk · 3 pointsr/Rabbits

There's a lot of info online you can find. Wabbit wiki is always a great source: http://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Grooming

Some bunnies take to it easily, others way less so. Thrasher is on the difficult side. What I do is put him on a folded up towel on the Kitchen table (somewhere he is unfamiliar with). Then I sort of wedge him under my armpit and hold him in place with that arm. With my other hand I cover his eyes and pet his face. My partner than takes a paw and frees it as much as she can to clip. Read more about identifying where the quick ends, but a good way to double check is to do the press-press-clip method where you squeeze the clippers a couple times and only snip if he doesn't flinch.

I like htese nail clippers: https://www.amazon.com/CleanHouse-Pets-Clippers-Safety-Stainless/dp/B07D9CLFYD/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=rabbit+nail&qid=1555001824&s=gateway&sr=8-5

u/a-20 · 8 pointsr/Rabbits

Looks like the Iris Pen. My gals have the larger version since they have a second level to their box home.

We got ours at Target online because it sometimes goes on sale for the weirder colors. The pen is super nice because you can get additional panels for a modular setup.

u/punkitschparty · 2 pointsr/Rabbits

I bought this 24" Tall Playpen for my rabbit to keep her in a specific location or to keep her out of places (e.g. away from cat litterbox) and has worked well except when you are trying to keep her in. She has the strength to move the playpen. This works well as a gate as well, which is how I use it to keep my rabbit out of the cat's litter box.

u/DarkQueen83 · 1 pointr/Rabbits

Hmm, my idea would be the get a wood chew ball like this and try putting treats inside it so Rabbitface has to chew through it to get the treats. Love that name by the way!

u/adhoc_lobster · 2 pointsr/Rabbits

You can also make a climbing tower for your rabbit out of those metal storage cubes. Like these. One of those cubes is perfect jump-able rabbit height. I cover up the platforms with cheap carpet squares.

u/HappyDays19 · 1 pointr/Rabbits

As for water, here is what I use: E-Z Crocks . As for pens: I got 2 of these for each of our 2 rabbits. We stacked them on top of each other so they were tall enough (so total of 4 sets of paypens from amazon). We r in an apartment and they take up our dining room but totally worth it so they can have lots of space.

u/Seal_Point_Lop · 1 pointr/Rabbits

You're welcome. I really like the nail guard. It helps me to gauge how much nail I'm trimming. The only bad thing I've experienced is pieces of trimmed nail getting stuck in the guard/pivot area sometimes. Still, the clippers have lasted and continue to work great, no split nails or accidents from cutting too short.

These look similar and are a little cheaper: https://www.amazon.com/CleanHouse-Pets-Clippers-Safety-Stainless/dp/B07D9CLFYD/

u/crustation · 2 pointsr/Rabbits

The mesh part is probably just a storage cube set. I did the same thing with my bunny.

https://www.amazon.com/Whitmor-Storage-Cubes-Stackable-Interlocking/dp/B000LRBSFI/

The teal panels are also storage cubes, I've seen the exact same ones at Walmart. The storage cube option gives you more flexibility in designing their little home. If you have no Walmart I'm sure stores with college dorm essentials will stock them for real cheap.

u/pharmaconaut · 9 pointsr/Rabbits

To add a helpful suggestion, this x style pens from Amazon are both cheap are safe for rabbits: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IX6S8YI/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Get the 24 inch version, and go over to uhaul or johanns, better yet both, and get some uhaul moving fabric (recycled denim) and some fleece to put on top. Super cozy, and will protect from accidents.

And get a cheap 6 dollar open top litter box, and some pine litter. You'd be amazed how quickly they pee train themselves. :) Rabbits don't generally pee on the floor, but if you are still nervous, get some pond liner. It's thick plastic, and you can cut it to size underneath the fabric

/u/ruthbigsby is commenting on the fact that wire bottom cages cause sore hocks (word for rabbit feet) which is an infected inflamed foot. Super unpleasant for both you and the rabbit.

Cute babes!

u/floodingthestreets · 1 pointr/Rabbits

Our more athletic bunny has the taller version. She's escaped from plenty of the standard sized x-pens, but this one is holding her in just fine without a top.

Amazon has what I assume is the same thing.

I notice the customer images for this one shows several converted in pet cages.

It's that with a DIY coroplast floor. We're going to double it when Pumpkin gets bigger.

u/Heyoz · 1 pointr/Rabbits

I use these to make my pens, though they won't work great as dividers (atleast not straight dividers) as they need a bend in them to keep them from folding over.

Two packages would make a decent size pen for two baby bunnies, you could even make a second level!

u/AccioWine · 2 pointsr/Rabbits

Storage Cubes, twistie ties, and binder clips! I've been using this set up for years, and never a problem except -

Only once has a bun ever broke out (and that was this guy); the night before something outside frightened him and he flipped out for a bit and pushed one panel out of the clip and I didn't notice. I got home from work the next day and he was chillin' under the coffee table.
