From a retrogaming perspective, the feature set isn't worth the money. The only people who'd want it is if they really want the form over function.

You certainly could use a board like this and feed it from the 5V barrel jack. There are 5V input points on either size of the microUSB socket. The problem is that you would then need to carry around the bespoke 5V wall wart to charge it, instead of using whatever microUSB cable you have lying around. Your call.
