It helps to know what something is worth and if you don't, look it up. You can get burned by impulse purchases.

About a year ago, I'm at a Goodwill and its 8:30 PM, they close a 9.

I see a beautiful coffee table book called The Navy by Rear Admiral W. J. Holland.

GW wanted $25 for it. It also had some light wear damage and dirty brown scuff marks on it, Formula 409 would have easily taken care of the dirty scuff marks.

Coffee table books can be very expensive..... I'll have to look in to this! It could be a schweet score! I doubt that anyone will buy this book in the next half hour, it'll be here tomorrow.

I go home and start researching this book, first stop, Google.

The Navy. This book has a stuffed and padded vinyl cover, the Navy emblem is raised about 1/4 off the cover and is about 4 inches wide. Take a look at the image gallery.

Amazon had it for under $20, Barnes & Noble had it for $11.99 and if you did an online reservation for in-store pickup, it was reduced to $9.99.

I also see that they have a book for each branch of the service, I call a friend who is a retired Army officer and ask him if he wants a nice book on the Army and I deliberately don't tell him anything about it.

"I found a nice book you may enjoy, its on me, my treat.".

I reserve both books and about 45 minutes later, I get an email that my order is ready for pick-up.

I go to the customer service desk with my reservation printed out, my order is waiting at the check-out counter.

They had stacks of these books in perfect mint condition near the front of the store.

When it was my turn to see a sales person, the guy there asks me if I have a B&N frequent reader rewards card, I stated that I didn't. He picked up a card from the side of the register and scans it, an additional discount registers on the screen.

I thank him, pay for the purchase and walk back to my car.

Looking at the receipt, including sales tax, each book came out to be $7.13, brand new.

The look on my friend's face when I pulled the book out of the bag and handed it to him was awesome.

Be careful of impulse purchases, if you are not sure you're looking at a deal in your hands, do your research first. I'm glad I did!

I found a great deal thanks to GW! Too bad it wasn't at GW.

Hate to burst your bubble, but this is from a company called Eccolo. I know because I have one, haha. I absolutely love it and I've had it for about 12 years. I bought it through a watch company called Stauer. It's still available on Amazon, here.

Edit: Burst your bubble wasn't right to say. I'm glad you love it as much as I love mine. Enjoy. PS: The threaded binding around the edges wears away after decent use. I replaced mine with a brown shoelace and it looks awesome.

> For people and family photos, I love ISO 400 color print film. It's fast enough to let me shoot without flash in any light, and good enough to look good even if I have plenty of light.
>
>Any ISO 400 film will work, and you can get it anywhere that sells film. Fuji Superia 400 is my favorite low-cost ISO 400 film. It sells for about $3 a roll.
>
>Fuji 400H Professional is my favorite — but costs about $8 a roll. I order it online as I always have; good film always has to be ordered.
>
>If you're expecting to be shooting in very dim light, ISO 800 print film doesn't have much more gain than ISO 400, and you'll be much better able to stop motion. It has slightly less vivid colors and a little more grain, but that's much better then a blurry picture if the light is very dim.
>
>
>
> ISO 100 print film is even better if you're outdoors and don't expect to be indoors during the same roll of film, except that ISO 100 print film is usually optimized for nature and landscape photos more than for people photos.

Nice! I would still clean it, even if it doesn't look dirty. I mix a little dish soap (about a quarter size) in with warm water. I then use an old white t-shirt or rag to clean it -- I dip the rag into the mixed solution and then wipe off the entire bag, typically in a circular motion. I highly recommend this conditioner that I buy from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0042NI86E/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_image_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. I have used it on all of my vintage Dooney and Coach bags and all my leather boots. I again use a piece (a new piece) of white rag and apply the conditioner pretty generously -- but you don't want any globs anywhere and wipe off anything that's noticeably sitting on any stitching. I then let it sit for about 10-20 minutes and wipe everything off in a circular motion with a clean rag piece. You'll then want to allow it time to dry. I'd say mine are typically dry within an hour. If you find any spots that still feel oily, just wipe them off again in a circular motion. Hopefully this helps! It's a process, but I did this today with this one I posted and it looks so much prettier!

If you're interested in using the camera, film is still made for it. It's pricey but fun! Just make sure you read the instructions to get the best results!

Amazon link.

It looks like this was a big Christmas toy for rich parents in 2008. It originally retailed for $299.99.

Talked to a couple at their garage sale, and they said their son was afraid of it. They were asking $100 but we got it for $30. Pretty sure this is going to my boyfriend's sister's 3 kids. Regardless, it was funny driving around with it in the back of the car.

I would highly recommend this. The coffee tastes better and it works great. Also environmentally friendly. There is a small gasket on the needle that needs to be adjusted for the reusable cups to work right.

u/booselordius · 2 pointsr/ThriftStoreHauls

Thank you! I actually just found the set on amazon! amazon link I'm excited to start using. The markers in the set are still fresh too. Looks like it was barely used.

I opened it up and someone else was eyeing it up and asked if I was going to buy it lol

u/Poofy_ · 1 pointr/ThriftStoreHauls

May I recommend this to complete it? I see he has a gun but yours doesn't. This is a little cap popper that is very clearly a toy if you want to get it for the costume. Still looks great though.

Safety razors are fantastic. You save so much money even when you buy the best blades. Once I got the technique down, I get virtually no irritation after a shave. With those stupid 5 blade razors I was guaranteed red bumps on my neck for the next few days.

Astra superior platinum blades are my favorite that I've tried. They're a little more expensive but the quality is fantastic and I get 3-4 shaves off each one.

This is actually a playmat for card games like Magic the Gathering and Pokemon! Although they make AMAZING mouse mats (I've been using mine for years)

For what it's worth, that looks like a SX-70. You might have luck with something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Impossible-PRD2783-Color-Polaroid-Cameras/dp/B00FMSZAOQ/ref=pd_sim_236_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=A1KEW9929JXHPDRH0A5V

Old Polaroid film is more expensive and a lot dicier proposition as to if it works or not after so many years.

I removed the former broken and bent clock movement and inserted a battery powered movement from a kitchen clock I already owned. I ended up having to cut down the hour, minute and second hands to fit the old vintage clock but it worked beautifully. I just used the old hands as a template.

Here's a tutorial I found that pretty much explains everything. Except I didn't have to buy a new battery movement and used a clock I already owned. The only difficulty I ran into was getting the old movement out because of all the congealed oil and bent movements. I had to take it slow in order not to damage anything. But once everything was out, it was smooth sailing.

I just woke up, but I'll get you a photo of the inside and back once I get out of bed today.

The price was way too rich for my blood, but as the parent of a dinosaur addicted toddler this was pretty cool to find kicking around.

Here's a link to some information about it on Amazon:

I don't think it was...though I obviously could be wrong, but I think that's a contemporary $100ish chair. Amazon sells one: https://www.amazon.com/Roundhill-Furniture-Contemporary-Tufted-Swivel/dp/B00QMK1SAS/

The locking mechanism on the stem where it connects to the base is a bit of a give away that it's a contemporary chair (vs, the more typical one-piece tulip bases of the past).

(In any case, $15 is still a great price for it)

u/RentalCat · 3 pointsr/ThriftStoreHauls

Hah! The film is more expensive than the camera! Good find. Also, the market value of the camera seems to be over $100!

It's anyone keeping track of potential profit in a hall of fame in this sub?

u/zirtbow · 8 pointsr/ThriftStoreHauls

Got one of these at GW myself for $13 a long time ago. I took it apart and replaced all the gaskets (around 10 hours of work). It's been my daily fix for about a year now.

You might have to change the group head gasket. If you put the portafilter in it and it goes beyond that circle alignment mark then the gasket is probably worn.

Also one of your biggest enemies is if one of the two boilers is leaking. The older models had a black EPDM gasket. Later they upgraded them to these red high temp gaskets. There is one screw on the back if you take that off then take the screws off the top you can look down at the boilers and see if they're leaking anywhere. Mine was leaking super badly from the frothing boiler and I could see the stain on the bottom plate.

Feel free to PM me if you have some tech questions about this. If your thermostat is bad though I can't help you there.

edit: Sorry to burst your bubble but they're probably closer to $750 now new for a red one on Amazon.

https://www.amazon.com/KitchenAid-KES2102ER-Espresso-Independent-Boilers/dp/B00LU3MOHS?th=1

Still a great deal though. Although I bring it up because I think a used one might be around $300 on eBay. I mention it because you seem to need a drip tray, red flow overflow indicator, and chrome drip tray piece. That can probably run $50+. Then you need a portafilter, gasket replacement, cup rail on the top... etc. So costs can add up quickly.

I got this off a neighborhood resale/posting website. He posted it 40 mins prior to me messaging him and I got it first. He told me when we picked it up that 6 people had messaged him about it after I had. :) I'll be using it to store my paints since I don't drink. Pic of the art on the inside. I found it on Amazon and it's worth $149.99.

Super late to this, but you can buy sanitizing spray similar to what bowling alleys use.

I bought this one and I guess it worked just fine.

u/aki1801 · 2 pointsr/ThriftStoreHauls

There are shoe disinfectant sprays, if you were okay with buying something. About $10 on Amazon.

I agree with this. Found a DE razor at an antique mall for $20 and use these razors. I bought a pack of 100 in August 2012 and am nowhere near halfway through them.
