I've been doing something similar to yourself though less in a consolidating manner than just upgrading my tools. I have a lot of Wera kit and can't say enough good about them though I've heard equally good things about Wiha and others.

On the multi side, something like this kit might suit you.

I have this kit which has the same small driver handle but a selection of regular short bits. It has the added benefit of a small but strong and very well made ratchet handle and sockets. If you need something along those lines as well the extra cost is worth spending.

As for regular screwdrivers I have this set but you may find their regular non-insulated ones cheaper.

The blades are top notch and the handles I find very comfortable in the hand. Everyones different though so you're probably best to try some out in a shop somewhere if you can get hold of them.

GearWrench 35pc micro driver set I have one of these and it comes in handy all the time. I'm a professional mechanic and this kit always comes with me on service calls.

or

Wera Tool-Check Plus Bit Ratchet Set with Sockets - Imperial Basically a fancier more indepth version of the GearWrench set. I don't own one, but its on my list and would likely replace the GW set at work. I'd bring the GW set home.

or

Knipex Alligator Plier Set What can be said, Knipex makes the best pliers. You can grab hex heads, turn pipe as it grips like a mother, and any other thing your sweet little heart desires.

or

If you want to save up a little more cash, these Knipex Plier Wrenches are awesome or so I've heard Also on my list of stuff to get. These play a similar role as adjustable wrenches.

Craftsman is junk; Husky is decent; Snap On is overpriced.

I re-tooled last summer from my old Williams set. Here's what I wound up with:

-Snap On GF80: 3/8" drive ratchet, got it off ebay for $50. I probably wouldn't buy again, but it is very nice.

-Pittsburgh Pro extendable 1/2" drive and flex-head 1/4" ratchets: Less than $20 each, and they are 90% as good as the Snap On. I would probably buy the 3/8" instead of the Snap On, if I had to do it over again.

-Pittsburgh Pro 1/2" drive impact sockets: These boys have taken some abuse at this point, and other than the etching having been stripped off of a couple (see abuse above), they are still in great shape. $25 for shallow, $32 for deep, Metric or SAE.

-GearWrench 3/8" drive impact sockets: $60 for a pretty complete (8mm-19mm + 21mm, 5/16"-3/4") set, and they are very thin-walled so you don't really need chrome.

-Pittsburgh Pro 3/8" chrome (shallow only): $9/set for 12-point sockets, which is the only reason I got them.

-Pittsburgh Pro 1/4" chrome sockets, shallow and deep: Overpriced, really, but I got the color-coordinated ones which are pretty cool. I might go for a cheaper set if I had to do it again. $8-9/set.

-GearWrench Long Pattern Wrench Set: I got the 22-piece Metric set (6mm-32mm with some skips) for $97; I haven't bothered to get the SAE set, I just have a handful of Pittsburgh SAE wrenches on a wrench ring.

And a big rally box to put it all in. I bet you could get all of it for under $500 if you use coupons at Harbor Freight and shop around for the GearWrench stuff.

-------------------------------------------------------------

I also got a DeWalt cased set to keep in my trunk:

https://www.homedepot.com/p/DEWALT-1-4-in-x-3-8-in-Drive-Polished-Chrome-Mechanics-Tool-Set-200-Piece-DWMT75000/206510555

But I had to add some wrenches (it has 10mm, 11mm, 13mm and 14mm; wtf?!) to my trunk bag to make it "complete," and even then it has some oddness to it (3/8" drive starts at 14mm, so you'd better not have any really tight 12mm bolts...) so it might not be what you are looking for, but they make a few different sets.

----------------------------------------------------

Other things I considered:

https://www.amazon.com/Williams-50614-2-Inch-Socket-146-Piece/dp/B00HR1Q5F4

$320 for a complete Williams socket set, but the wrenches are about the same...

---------

This might be the "bang for the buck" winner, simply for the completeness of the socket sets:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LYZ2IJ5

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MDO6L90

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OZJN3PQ

$270 ($180 for 1/2", $88 for 1/4" and 3/8") for a staggeringly complete set (10mm-32mm in 1/2" drive, shallow and deep, with no skips!) and then $42/set for the wrenches, 8mm-22mm.

---------

https://www.amazon.com/KD-Tools-KDT-80942-239-Piece/dp/B00OL2XFLO

GearWrench socket, wrench and allen key set, $210 for a whole bunch of tools, although they aren't the high-tooth-count ratchets.

--------

https://www.harborfreight.com/hand-tools/hand-tool-sets/301-pc-mechanics-tool-set-63464.html

Then there's this thing. It is actually quite well reviewed, and surprisingly complete on the socket side, if a little short on wrenches. It's usually on sale for $160.

---------

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0056E11QW

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BT0AYG0

...and then there's the dream: If I could get away with having this stripped-down of a set... $600 for a very nice, but fairly bare-bones set. No deep-well, no 3/8" drive at all (hello, super-tight 12mm bolts!), and only great big long extensions... if you never need to get into really tight spaces, maybe. The 3/8" drive set is another $260 on top of this, and still doesn't have short extensions or deep-well sockets.

u/pnapod · 0 pointsr/Tools

I don't like harbor freight because they skip sizes and they don't have a complete set that I have found of metric and standard and shallow and deep well.

You didn't say what drive size you're wanting, but if it's 3/8” then I would recommend this gear wrench set off Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UM688Z6/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_apa_i_FqJaBbDMPHTZS

I bought it a month ago for $90 and it's on sale now for $65. It is a great set. Includes a nice case and both standard and metric deep/shallow. As well as a couple extensions and a universal joint. Also, one thing I like is the size is stamped on there in an easy to read label.

u/PhysicsDude55 · 1 pointr/Tools

Yes, those hex bits will work in a regular drill chuck, or a hex chuck.

I'd recommend getting this set, with an impact driver and drill. Impact drivers are generally easier to use for stuff like screwing in screws, and you can leave the drill for drilling. You'll want a drill with a regular chuck so you can use regular drill bits in it. I've never been a fan of the hex drill/drivers, I'd recommend getting an impact driver instead.

Hex shank drill bits are usually not that great. The Bosch ones are probably OK, but generally round shank drill bits are better, and by far more common.

Bosch makes good tools and good bits. I think you'll be happy with them.

u/BasicBrewing · 4 pointsr/Tools

If you're putting together furniture from a store, you'll probably want a set of allen keys around. I recommend Bondhus. Very solid tool for the price. I like the ball ends and prefer having them loose rather than swiss army knife style. There are better brands, but I don't think the added price is worth it for the home user.

I don't think wrenches are much use to most home users - especially if you have ratchets already. Might pick up some channel locks (or equivalent) and vice grips. Save some money and adds versatility.

Hammer, again for a home owner, doesn't make much difference. I'd probably suggest picking up one slightly smaller than you think you need. You'll likely be doing work that requires more precision that power in most cases.

Screwdrivers, it may be worth investing in a decent set. BUT if you (or somebody in your household) is prone to losing them or using them incorrectly (like as a pry bar or breaking up ice, etc), expensive screw drivers would be wasted on you. I'd start with a basic set you can get at the local big box (Kobalt is on deep discount at Lowes right now; Husky is a solid choice at HD; HF Pittsburgh will do most of what you ask of them) - all at a good price. Might also be worth picking up a cheap-y driver with interchangeable bits to keep in the junk drawer. Might just end up using that more than anything else.

Pliers, I don't think I would splurge on either. You will use them, but the difference between something high end vs entry level homeowner stuff will be lost on most folks. Not worth the extra money, in my opinion (and like screwdrivers, depending on who is using the tool, these are the second most likely thing to get destroyed being used incorrectly or lost). One other tool that might fit in this category are some wire strippers. I would spend a little extra money for a good pair. Lot of folks around here like Klein. Solid brand, solid tools. Little bit pricier. I have some Southwires which are a bit cheaper, but alot of guys get on for being made in China or inferior compared to Klein. I'm definitely not a pro, but I've not had any problems with them including wiring up a generator on 10/3 UF-B wire and doing a full electrical install in an office/shed.

u/midshipmen89 · 1 pointr/Tools

I use this set everyday at work. I paid about that much for the set, and it was worth it. I didn't think I would use all three of the handles, but I like having the option now. I definitely use all of the extensions, even the flexible ones, despite them not being able to handle much torque. The 30 bits it comes with are decent, about the same quality as the top brand from the big box stores, but I replaced the ones I use most with Wera.

The Snap-on examples are nicer. They feel better, and will probably last longer, but not for a couple hundred bucks more.

u/GillicuttyMcAnus · 1 pointr/Tools

I bought a cheapo Wen off of Amazon. For the price of a Dremel^^TM accessory kit, I get a whole tool, accessories, and flex shaft (the accessories were so-so, but with the money I saved I was able to buy other fittings for it)... For what I need a rotary tool for, this one fits perfect. I've used many Dremel^^TM brand tools before, and this one is just as good.

Here's the thing with rotary tools tho, they're light duty. They're great for small/odd jobs, but if you're doing anything more than a few minutes work, an air die grinder and/or cut off wheel will be about 1000x better.

What do you need a rotary tool for?

u/steinauf85 · 1 pointr/Tools

both have been linked in this thread.

you yourself found the hex shank bits:
> I’m assuming my only option is impact ready like this DEWALT DD5160 Impact Ready 10 Piece Titanium Drill Bit Set https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017KUENH8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_BH57AbSDWFX1B

and the top comment linked you to the keyless adapter:
> That chuck only accepts 1/4" hex bits. You'll need something like this in order to use twist drills, or you can buy 1/4" hex/"impact ready" drill bits like these.. The other style you are used to is called a keyless chuck.

u/NomarGarciaVega · 7 pointsr/Tools

Not op, but its nice that it comes with the wheels installed. Wish that there were swivel casters only in the middle and handle end.

The top drawer is able to hold hansen socket trays 1/4 through 1/2, also able to hold [this pliers organizer.](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00SA23E80/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01__o00_s02? ie=UTF8&psc=1)Still getting my garage in order and tools transferred from my smaller craftsman boxes. I'm liking it so far, one small gripe is that the long top drawer cant be pushed in from the corners, you have to push it in from a couple inches in.

DEWALT DW745 10-Inch Compact Job-Site Table Saw with 20-Inch Max Rip Capacity - 120V https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000HXT2N6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_geUlzbS7H4WS2

I have had this saw for about 4-5 years and I'm continually impressed with its performance. It's small/light enough to be picked up with one arm, yet powerful enough to rip 4x of nearly any material. I strongly recommend it. I had used a Rigid saw before (comparable model) and this saw leaves it in the dust in every category. My 2 cents, good luck on your shopping!

Ergodyne/Arsenal 5872 Wrench Roll may fit your needs. I have the ballistic nylon tool roll version (they make a canvas one as well) and it is way beefier than the canvas one from Bucket Boss (1680D ballistic nylon vs 18oz cotton duck).

My tool roll doesn’t have elastic down the middle like the CLC one but that shouldn’t be an issue if you’re getting the wrench roll specifically.

Here are some suggestions of good brands but substitute with lesser brand as you see fitted:

u/Petermoffat · 2 pointsr/Tools

I was on the point of getting the Veto, but the cost to get it here was as much as a cheapish rollcab..

Ended up with one of these

https://www.amazon.com/Stanley-Fatmax-Tool-Backpack-1-95-611/dp/B002ST7FHC/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?keywords=stanley+fatmax+backpack&qid=1559064168&s=gateway&sprefix=stanley+fatmax+back&sr=8-4

And it is awesome. Plenty of space and the inner tool storage is removable. I’ve used it almost daily for about 6 months now and it shows no signs of wear. It’s loaded with about 15kg of tools.

I’m sure the Pro pac is in another league, but for almost a tenth of the price, the fat max is really very good

u/NYstate · 2 pointsr/Tools

On Amazon the Wen 2305 and up have pretty good reviews. Same with the Black And Decker one you suggested.

WEN 2305 Rotary Tool Kit with Flex Shaft https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003BYRFH8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_U240xb88A6B97

This Dremel looks nice ($75-$120+). Idk, I'll pay for whatever is best. I want to make sure all my silver is shiny so when I die it will look pretty while my copse turns into worm poo.

u/dan_blather · 1 pointr/Tools

My girlfriend won me this Crescent set at a silent auction a while back. It's only $50 more on Amazon, has good reviews, and the quality of most of the pieces is surprisingly good - solid, high polish, mostly Taiwan. I use it whenever I have to carry tools somewhere, and I'm too lazy to pick and choose out of the roll cab.

u/rompenstein · 9 pointsr/Tools

Here's what I would personally recommend for a decent minimum starter set, assuming you're just looking for general homeowner/handywork tools:

u/silentsinner- · 0 pointsr/Tools

12v would be more suited for light duty mobile work like that. 18/20v would just be extra weight to haul around. Here is a good comparison of the different 12v drills: http://www.protoolreviews.com/buying-guides/best-12v-cordless-drill-roundup/25102/

I've got the Bosch drill and pocket driver and love them. Almost never use my 18v Dewalt tools any more. They reviewed the brushless version. I went with the brushed because it has more torque. $168 for the combo https://www.amazon.com/CLPK22-120-12-Volt-Lithium-Ion-Batteries-Charger/dp/B005GT0IWK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1473956737&sr=8-2&keywords=bosch+12v

I can also recommend Bacho's driver, been using it for years

And in the UK, Halfords are pretty awesome for spanner’s and sockets & have lifetime guarantee at a fraction of snap on

u/Hawk427 · 3 pointsr/Tools

That chuck only accepts 1/4" hex bits. You'll need something like thisin order to use twist drills, or you can buy 1/4" hex/"impact ready" drill bits like these.. The other style you are used to is called a keyless chuck.

u/SgtPackets · 2 pointsr/Tools

Those Offset ratcheting screwdrivers that take standard bits are pretty frigging useful.

I use this Bahco set myself:

I like it when people post these, everyone had to start somewhere!

This is my mobile kit I keep in my truck:

Crescent 170 Pc. General Purpose Tool Set - Closed Case - CTK170CMP2 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00F4AVRGW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_.yeDDbYB96QT1

If you hold out you can get it for ~$60
It's not a full compliment of sizes, but great for most repairs on the go!

u/achtagon · 2 pointsr/Tools

Multi bit sets are good for infrequently used square or torx bits but you want a good basic screwdriver set. See: http://www.amazon.com/Wera-Kraftform-Screwdriver-Lasertip-6-Piece/dp/B007NLPJN2?th=0

Also get a socket set and vice grips, pipe wrench pair for plumbing, and a small, medium and large crescent wrench.

u/lavardera · 1 pointr/Tools

This heavy canvas looks strong, but I'd rather have a strap with buckle than a tie cord.
This one comes in canvas or poly but still has a tie cord.
This company make a nice leather tool roll, I'm not sure if they make a wrench roll but you could look up the company easy enough.
This company Bull Tools has a lot of different sizes in heavy canvas

I have the older iteration of this set in the trunk of my car. I've done most easy repairs and maintenance with it (tune-up, brakes and oil and transmission pan drop) it has a pretty thin profile and the case sucks but this one seems to be better from the reviews.

There's plenty of options that don't cost as much as the Snap-On. I'm not sure why you thought I was recommending the Snap-On. Since you mentioned Canadian prices check this out. It's actually a better ratcheting screwdriver (48 teeth and knurling with a better bit-holder) than the Snap-On. Only difference is COO of Taiwan (as Snap-On Industrial Bahco brand) vs Snap-On USA COO. The price on it keeps dropping too as seen here

u/jacoblb6173 · 2 pointsr/Tools

Look into getting one of those plier organizers. I got one from amazon. Changed my life. Super cheap too. not an associate link

Also what brand are those hose pliers? I think I need some.

u/Homeoftheben · 15 pointsr/Tools

Always great to see the yellow stickers!
Just a heads up too, this was on slickdeals today as Amazon's deal of the day:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002NYD1W/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1

u/Spraypainthero965 · 3 pointsr/Tools

You'll want to have a 6-in-1 screwdriver, a 12V drill and impact driver and some pliers:

  • Tongue-and-groove aka channel lock style
  • Needlenose
  • Lineman's
  • Diagonal cutters aka dikes

For the hand tools it doesn't matter what brand you get if you won't be using them every day. For the drill and driver I'd go with 12V Bosch or Milwaukee. This kit is cheap and reliable or you could go with this kit if you have use for the compact sawzall.
u/anonymousQ_s · 2 pointsr/Tools

Yep, but actually a good deal according to camel camel camel.

You can also cut up a standard kitchen dish drain for the same effect, but this rack is stronger.

u/bassjam1 · 3 pointsr/Tools

If you plan on driving screws more often than drilling holes, I'd recommend an impact driver instead of a drill/driver. I have the 18v Bosch combo kit: impact and drill/driver, and I find that I use the impact weekly but the drill only gets used every now and then.

https://www.amazon.com/Bosch-PS41-2A-12-Volt-Lithium-Ion-Batteries/dp/B003LST02W

Getting both in a kit isn't much more.

https://www.amazon.com/Bosch-CLPK22-120-Lithium-Ion-Batteries-Carrying/dp/B005GT0IWK

As far as brands, it's hard to go wrong with Bosch, Makita, DeWalt and Milwaukee. Pick whatever has the best price this week.

u/dmscheidt · 3 pointsr/Tools

Rearranging things to fill in the new drawers. Finally can get the pliers in one place, or most of them. There are some in boxes and pouches, because that's where they should live, and a few that won't fit.

Big kudos to /u/PM_YR_MOOSE_KNUCKLE for recommending the pliers rack. Putting them on their side makes storage so much more efficient.

edit: some day, I'll remember how to link stuff

Unless the Ridgid warranty has changed, it's pretty useless for the homeowner who occasionally uses a tool.

It's been a very good deal for me, though. When a battery goes bad I take it to the authorized service center and drop it off. A few weeks later I stop by again to get my replacement battery. (Even if they have a battery in stock, they can't give it to me if I'm invoking the lifetime warranty.)

The only reason I do this is that I have other batteries and I have other drills. It's only a minor inconvenience if the battery or the drill is out of service for a few weeks.

If I could only have one drill, it would be a Bosch 1/2" corded. Next I'd get the Bosch 12V driver/impact driver combo - relatively inexpensive and plenty good enough for just about anything a homeowner would ever use it for. It's $100 on Amazon:

I bought the first link (1/4th and 3/8th set) and 3rd link (wrenches and knife) so far you talked me into it lol. (all i have money for right now), i'll be getting impacts in the future but my impact gun is a 3/8th drive so i was thinking these
