>I recently moved to a new home and now have gigE internet service. Unfortunately, my old router and WAP can't handle the speed (Wireless-N Airport Extreme). To fix this, I about a TP-Link Archer C7, and I'm still not seeing the speeds that I want, but I'm still not happy with my performance.

Awesome. You made my shitlist of people I'm jealous of. lol Except that extreme router. lol

>When I connect the modem directly to my computer, I'm seeing 980 Mbps.

Seems about right.

>When the Aiport Extreme

Gonna stop you right there. Throw that thing away and bury it at a crossroads at midnight.

>and separate gigabit switch are involved, I'm seeing about 250 Mbps,

Exactly.

>and with the Archer C7 and gigabit switch, I'm seeing about 780 Mbps down.

rubs eyes How is that possible?

>So, I'm looking to take the Archer C7 back

Good!

>in favor of a USG and Unifi WAP. On average, what speeds should I expect from a USG?

I know I'm gatekeeping lol but it's A.P. The wireless is implied. This is where the questions start however.

  1. What sort of modem do you have?
  2. Does your ISP support direct fiber hand-off?
  3. What sort of budget are you playing with?

    >I need 1300 square feet of WiFi coverage.

You need unifi mesh to make things less labor intense. That or two unifi AC pros for solid coverage. You can get away with one (placed in the center most part of your home) if you absolutely had to do without.

    You'll also need the following:

  4. 10Gtek for Ubiquiti SFP+ Direct Attach Copper Cable x 2 (you can return the second one later
  5. Unifi Key
  6. Ubiquiti SFP Module

The concept is. You either buy a Ubiquiti Edge Router 4 / a Unifi Security Gateway with an SFP WAN. and have the ISP give you a direct fiber hand off and use one of the copper GTEK SFP patch cables to patch you over to a unifi / ubiquiti switch (please make sure this is either POE / not). This is a cost consideration. Hook your AP to the boona end of the switch and presto blamo you have just shy of a 1 gig internet access internally.

Good luck! Comment if you have any questions.

For people looking for sim free and unlocked options I can recommend this Netgear modem
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N5ASNTE

I have used it along with the $10 Tmobile plan at a few places around here and it works great. If you can get decent LTE signal from Tmobile you can get some remarkable speeds https://imgur.com/a/JlpeHh7

Hi.
Thanks for all the help!
I ended up ordering this: https://www.amazon.com/Dual-band-Wireless-Dual-core-Processor-AiProtection/dp/B07K1QC9FX
It should be more than good enough :D I'll also get it wired (through the wall or something) this week!

u/Investinwaffl3s · 1 pointr/Ubiquiti

Well, with RAID-1 a controller failure (on the 2.5" enclosure) - you should still able to pop that M.2 drive into another system and read the data back as normal.

2x M.2's are going to be expensive, BUT

I just found a 2x 2.5 to 3.5" RAID adapter. This would be much more ideal for Protect but I am not sure if it will support 2x 12.5mm drives like the 5TB Seagate 2.5

These are what I swapped out my wheeled Navepoint 18U Rack Fans with: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MZ6VNII/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1. These should fit on the 12U and other models from Navepoint. I like that you can adjust the speed as well.

Note: I swapped out the included "USB" Power supply as it is rated higher than 5V, I guess to get more speed out of the fans. I decided to use an OEM Cell Phone charger which makes the fans spin at a slightly slower speed and keeps the noise down as this rack sits in our main hallway about 12 feet from where I lay my head at night. Works great, keeps the air flowing and life is good.

PSA: I suggest putting a warning label on the AC Infinity USB Power Supply so it isn't accidentally used for devices. I'd hate for anyone to blow up their personal electronics.

Like a thermostat cover?

https://smile.amazon.com/Honeywell-CG511A1000-Thermostat-Prevent-Tampering/dp/B000BPGP6M/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1526416064&sr=8-3&keywords=thermostat+cover

Double check your dimensions based on your AP but I'd think something like that would work.

However, I've taken the APs apart, and if they're well mounted they'll likely hold up to most hits from most objects.

I'm using this to go from my USG-PRO-4 to a US-24-250W
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XHF7JSG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_eQjZCb6VNWZ8R
They are both plain SFP ports but this cable works great. Didn't have to configure anything!

u/pltaylor3 · 1 pointr/Ubiquiti

I really like these for fixing that problem. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N6CFES0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And I feel you on the old home, our house is 100+ yr old and I just paid some electricians to run ethernet all over the upper level. Was well worth the money to have someone else snake the wires :)

u/devious_panda · 3 pointsr/Ubiquiti

I actually use one of these in my network rack as well as a top-mounted exhaust fan. I have an Anker 5p USB hub that powers one of my smart hubs and then 3 Pi's.

Other equipment, from top to bottom:

Level 2: Unifi USG Pro 4

Level 3: kenable 24-port Patch panel (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07951MLD4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s03?ie=UTF8&psc=1 )

Oh, yeah just doing 1080p here. These are the ones I use, but they do have 4k ones that you don't need two ethernet ports for.

1080p w/o IR: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00G5RBX2Q/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

1080p w/ IR: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0764KX3JR/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The ones that support 4K are at-least twice the price basically and if you want HDR 4:4:4 and all that jazz.

I got this one for my project recently. Very good value. 55 watt load will last about 50 minutes.

u/muffinthumper · 1 pointr/Ubiquiti

What type of fan did you use? Will a Noctua 40mmX10mm fit your model?

Should I get a 5v or 12v version?

u/CygnusTM · 1 pointr/Ubiquiti

I'm using a DAC cable like this, and neither end is what I would call hot.

Thanks for the gold!

I am using these:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MRV4WA1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They are less expensive than MOCA and since I do not have MOCA for TV boxes, they work great.

u/SixSpeedDriver · 1 pointr/Ubiquiti

Believe it is an older model of this guy:
https://www.amazon.com/Tripp-Lite-Battery-Rack-Mount-SMART1500LCD/dp/B000DZRY9C/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1549348055&sr=8-4&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=Tripp+Lite+UPS&dpPl=1&dpID=41ATThlgN4L&ref=plSrch

Sits at the bottom of a Telco rack, with a 24port trendnet switch, an EdgeRouter, a 8 port POE ToughSwitch and a Motorola cable modem. Server is an old build with an i3 with a 500gb SSD and 4x3TB WD Reds.

u/jimww333 · 1 pointr/Ubiquiti

They were purchased as USB powered but I used an AC adapter so i can run multiple. They are pretty quiet. Needed b/c its in a living room small media cabinet.

They get a bit warm. I just added a few fans to aid the circulation a bit in the cabinet. No issues.

Update To Add I found an Amazon seller that had 8, I ordered one, checked stock and it said 6, as of 5 minutes ago they were down to 1.

I have a UDM-pro that will be connected to a US-16-150W via this DAC:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XHF7JSG/

BUT per ubiquiti neither auto-negotiation works nor does it respect manually setting the link speed on the UDM end:

https://community.ui.com/questions/DAC-not-recognized-on-UDM-Pro/7e9d495e-f7a5-4f92-941d-6c22763a03b7#answer/ba29de99-4b4e-4c70-91e1-b24ad9dabc3c

>Link speed selection doesn't work on UDM Pro yet and auto mode sets 10G for DAC. That's why it doesn't work with the switch which has 1G enforced
