PART TWO -- wrote this before seeing your VIVE arrives... basically tomorrow

-=- recommended accessories -=-
get the Deluxe Audio Strap. this is a MUST HAVE.

https://www.amazon.com/HTC-Vive-Deluxe-Audio-Strap-pc/dp/B06Y2GDXMC/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=htc+vive+deluxe+audio+strap&qid=1555922928&s=videogames&sr=1-1

i don't consider this an accessory...this is just absolutely CRUCIAL. installation took me ~15-20 minutes after watching a youtube video on how to install as the instructions that ship with it are ...lacking. there's a video of a german guy who shows you have to install it easily.... this strap adds not only great sounding, adjustable and comfortable headphones but (more importantly) will secure the HMD in a way that makes the default strap seem laughable. this deluxe strap allows more comfortable wear of the HMD, better cord management and eliminates the need for supplying your own audio (be it earbuds or headphones) while i ordered all of these "accessories" and received them before my VIVE, i decided to try the original / shipped strap before installing the "deluxe" and words can't describe the difference in fit, comfort, and how great the audio from the adjustable integrated earphones sound. the headphones are able to "snap" in an upright position when you are either removing /storing the HMD or just need to lift one up to hear something someone is trying to tell you...

-=-2nd suggestion for "accessories"-=-

probably most important second only to the deluxe audio strap.... get these tripods. you don't want to mount your lighthouses to your wall... with these tripods you are able to place your lighthouses without drilling/mounting. it is way worth the investment as the stands are very secure, adjustable and the lighthouses screw directly into them. no other parts needed, just these two stands... you'll realize that you might have to fine-tune/tweak the placement of the lighthouses slightly, and with these stands you are able to make adjustments (not only in placement but with the ball/swivel you are able to change the angle/pitch etc.) which you couldn't do if you mounted them.

-=-honorable mention -- not necessary but recommended...-=-

when i purchased my vive i made sure to get a nice stand to set the HMD/controllers on... (...i went a bit overboard with other accessories and for brevity i'll only mention two more accessories that i think you should pick up) here's the HMD/controller stand i purchased for when either storing the vive or to set it on while taking breaks/cooling off... . it isn't an absolute necessity but it gives it a nice place to rest the HMD/controllers during breaks between play (you will sweat a lot even in a cold room, i know i'm out of shape but with titles like sairento, sprint vector, space pirate etcetc i take breaks just to let my face breathe and cool off.) this beats just setting the HMD on the ground or on a nearby table which could easily fall off.... your call, but -- again, protect your investment!

"Skywin VR cable management system"
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0733NN7G8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

-- these are simply pullies that attach to your ceiling, allowing the cable to be out of the way of the ground... personal preference here but i find these very useful (especially with titles where i'm moving around a lot... sairento, gorn, QuiVR etc) ... protip: i went to walmart etc, purchased -several- packs of 3M "Command" large picture and frame hanging strips 16lb "large picture hanging strips" and have them all over my ceiling at different strategic places (depending on if i'm playing a title that requires my entire room i.e having to move my bed for the max. play area, or if i'm playing a title that requires only the smallest room setup or even for sitting) so using the 3M strips instead of the adhesive that comes with the pullies in the kit, i'm able to switch around the location of the pullies to suit each above situation...also, they remove without damaging your ceiling... if you have any questions on this just message me and i'd be happy to elaborate.
-=-
last accessory suggestion -- after watching videos of people punching holes in their walls etc. i decided to grab these protective frames which have saved my walls and possible harm to my controllers when demoing my vive to friends (even though when demoing i always have chaperone on "beginner", floor bounds on etc) it -never- fails that they will try to throw a grenade and hit my ceiling, swing a punch while playing Gorn and instead of my vive controller slamming into the wall, the cage around the circular top part absorbs the impact and deflects/redistributes the force from one point of contact to several. just throwing this out there, just in case you or someone you are showing it to will be inadvertently throwing your controller into your wall

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XDLMYMQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

final thoughts/closing: hmm. well, i think i said a LOT here and hope that your experience with installation is pleasant. again, let us all know how your first experience went and feel free to ask any questions.

Holy shit for real? I was being a dick too man, I apologize. People who've bought into gaming headsets often don't like hearing they aren't the best investment so I guess I'm prone to being salty with them.

If you want my recommendation for VR with the Vive I've been recommending the HD 558s for a number of reasons. They are really decent quality overear open headphones and the material on both the ear cups and the headband should hold on to your head well in use in VR while you're moving all around. These headphones (along with the 598s) have an amazing soundstage for gaming as well. Because they're open you're going to be able to hear the world around you, this might sound immersion breaking but I think you'll find that it's not and it's the trade off with open headphones and having a good soundstage. It also has the added benefit of being able to hear people while in VR though.

Now, coming from gaming headsets the bass might sound a bit lacking or they might not seem to pop as much but that's due to a more realistic and neutral soundstage. I am 99% sure you'll get used to it. As I mentioned about the 598s are also great and maybe even a little better but the headband is made out of a pleather material that tends to slip, so I can't recommend them for VR.

The 558s are about $100 and are easily one of the best pairs of headphone you can buy at that price point. For VR I would recommend picking up this as the included cable is very long (great for couch gaming, not for VR).

For a mic in VR I'd say just use the one in the Vive. For desktop I use either my Blue Snowball or my Blue Yeti.

I'll just mention stuff I've tried myself.

If money is no object, multiple monitors or at least headless ghosts are ironically useful in virtual desktop applications like Bigscreen. I run 3x2560x1600 in one large screen. Bigscreen has an update coming for multiple monitors too. Big physical screens are nice for spectators/multiplayer.

Until the wireless adapter comes out, a decently long displayport cable and longer USB cable running to the link box to cover the large play area and if you have an original Vive, the new 3-in-1 cable with a sleeve.

I've been looking at [this overhead pulley thing](https://www.amazon.com/MDW-Retractable-Management-Headset-Adhesive/dp/B01M6EB8DM/
) but I haven't actually tried it yet.

Two Vives would be good, you can run them off the same 2 base stations and partition the space with chaperone. I run a Rift and a Vive in the same room.

Get an assistant/intern/wife/child to help you set up/put things away, maintain everything, patch/update, find new content, etc...

Accessories:

  • Wireless headset/mic and an anchor for it
  • HOTAS, pedals (CH Throttle, T16000M, driving pedals for Elite Dangerous)
  • Force feedback wheel/pedals/shifter (old G25 here and the Simraceway wheel - surprisingly precise handheld wheel you don't mount to anything)
  • Xbox one controllers
  • Steam controllers
  • X-Arcade/NES/whatever emulation controllers
  • Leap Motion
  • Charging stations and rechargeable batteries
  • Locomotion options like Omni (Virtuix still hasn't shown up yet) / PocketStrafe / Wii balance board w/ GlovePie hacks

You might want a good recording setup with mixed reality support as well.

    e: stuff I forgot

  • Transducer like a buttkicker for tactile feedback in seated experiences (mine is a DIY) / Subpac wearable for standing

Why not use the screw? There's tons of clamps with 1/4"-20 thread that are meant to put lights and such onto various types of poles for film and such. I use them myself to mount my light houses onto vertical braces from harbor freight. (They have a smaller footprint than a light stand or tripod.)

Here's some examples of the ones I'm using.
Pedco 1.5 Ultra Clamp

This will grip even onto a very thin pole. For the record I mount them to these poles. Harbor Freight 2 in 1 Ratcheting Cargo Bar

Here's some other excellent multi purpose clamps but they need a ticker pole to mount.

Limostudios Super Clamp It's a clone of the more expensive manfrotto super clamp. They fit on the blue portion of the brace, not the thinner silver extended portion.

These clamps are pretty universal and you can get a number of different attachments for them. You could screw the lighthouse right on there but you couldn't really aim it without a ball mount or you could get an arm like this or this though that second one might wobble with the lighthouse motor. Arkon makes a good very sturdy clamp I've used to mount camcorders on for years though I've broken lots of the quick mounting plates over time. The arm is much stronger than the superclamp arm I showed earlier. There's also small clamps like this one

Also for the thread as someone else mentioned there are adapters. This is likely the adapter you need as that's the other common screw size you see. but I can't really know without seeing the tripod. Personally I prefer to use clamps and mount to poles anyhow, it gives you a lot of mounting options.

Sorry I should probably update that post, I tested out another one and it was much better then the KlearKare ones,

here's an update I posted in a reply on the rift forum,

"As posted in the Vive reddit, this is what I got for my Vive, I don't know what the exact size for the rift lens are though but for the vive, 49mm and 50mm works best. And yes they do curve with the lens too
http://www.amazon.com/Healingshield-Watch-Protector-Guard-1-97in/dp/B00SJ22D1K - imo the better version, more clear and not a wet application, you also get 3 - downside, longer shipping time since it ships from international location.

http://www.amazon.com/KlearKare-Invisible-Protector-Military-Protection/dp/B00BUJ354I - also very good but is a wet application and you need to squeegee the water out properly or it'll remain blurry in areas - you get 2
After 2 weeks with kleaarkare first, I decided to buy the healingshield version above to compare it to and the healing shield one was more clear IMO."

> My assumption is that closed headphones adds more presence since it isolates you more from the real world.

This is true. But with closed headphones you get less sound stage and it feels more like you're wearing headphones than it feels like sounds are happening around you. Open headphones allow sounds to feel like there is some space between your ear and where the sounds is coming from. It's kind of a balancing act.

I'm going to be using my Sennheiser HD 558 for personal use. They're the most comfortable thing I put on everyday. I could probably wear them 24/7 and not notice them. They just kind of melt into your head and onto your ears... and they sounds great for the price.

I did buy a shorter cable and plan on ziptieing the Vive cables so I get a snugger fit without more cable flopping around. The cable that comes with Senn HD5XX headsets is at least 8 feet long. Great for at your desk, not great to be dragging around behind you in VR.

u/boredguy12 · 2 pointsr/Vive

just you wait. you may be interested in getting a /r/hotas setup to play warthunder (Free+paid DLC), DCS (also Free+paid DLC), elite: dangerous($30), star citizen ($45), mechwarrior 4 (free), star fighter arduxim ($5), or vector 36 ($25). all great games to play with a set up. You can get an entry level one for $60 (Thrustmaster HOTAS 4 is your best bang/buck/skill) The feeling of using a physical throttle and joystick to fly and turn make my greatest experiences in VR.

My dog chewed my cables and vive is sending me a free cable which is pretty awesome! But I. The mean time I made my own cable by ordering 15 foot usb hdmi and power cable. It's works great and have been using it for a week with no issues. One thing you need to realize if you buy a new hdmi cable is the size of the head needs to be pretty small to fit comfortably in the headset.

Here is the one that worked for me

BEFORE ANYONE SENDS THEIR BREAKOUT CABLE BACK, PLEASE PURCHASE ANOTHER IN THE MEANTIME WHILE STOCK COMES MORE AVAILABLE.

THIS IS THE CABLE YOU WANT: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B011M32RLI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Cable Matters Ultra Slim HDMI Cable with RedMere Technology - 15 Feet

This is the second cable I replaced. My 3-in-1 Breakout cable that came with my Vive had a bad HDMI lead. Instead of sending it back I bought a replacement cable locally. It only lasted a month before doing the same as the original. Finally, I found the best cable to replace it with. The Cable Matters HDMI lead I linked above. It is PERFECT. The larger end fits inside the headset just like the original. The cable itself is nice and smooth and doesn't get tangled up like other replacements. Take my word! I've been down this path. The cable is only $16.99 Prime shipped.

u/justniz · 5 pointsr/Vive

My office is 60ft away from my play area.
You need a very high bandwidth active HDMI cable for the Vive. I used this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0186DNDR4 It works great.

AVOID THIS: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00L9L6W0Q
Before I knew better, I fell for its suspect claims. It doesn't work with the Vive at all. I returned it and got the one above instead.

I also got this active USB3 cable: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0053YLYLC/ The cable works great (even without using the included PSU). I used USB3 both because I have no problems with USB3 to the vive, and I also wanted the extra bandwidth to be able to have a USB hub next to the play area so I could simply drop in a small table with a keyboard/mouse/joystick/steam controller on, to play seated games like E:D without also having to move/recalibrate lighthouses.
If you're OK with just USB2 you can definitely find a much cheaper active USB2 cable that would also work (at least for extending Vive-only).

u/CMDR_Woodsie · 1 pointr/Vive

Wanted to check back in and report how this setup works.

So I went with the route of HDMI for now, using this cable and this USB extender over cat5e.

Everything works wonderfully, haven't tried camera yet, but latency is unnoticeable for first tests, and I am incredibly happy.

I'll be ordering some bulk cat6 to try HDMI extender boxes with, and I'll report my findings later on.

I appreciate the help, again, this might work well.

u/PM0ng3r · 1 pointr/Vive

So your longest cable is the one between the pc and coupler I’m guessing? Whatever the 25 ft one is I would replace with active. The others should be fine if passive. I use the 4K cable I linked for my projector and is a good option but the redmere cable is what I used for my Vive.

I didn’t use the camera so USB 2 was fine for me and the USB 3 couplers were all pretty crappy at the time. I didn’t need to plug any external power into the USB cable but got that one just in case I needed the extra juice.

4K/60 HDMI

HDMI I used with OG Vive

Active USB Cable

You may want to start with new couplers first. I’ve had good luck with Monoprice and you could buy a HDMI, usb 2 and usb 3 one all for under 10 dollars off Amazon.

u/ShadowCVL · 1 pointr/Vive

Okay, here is the Good, ish news. This cable works at least for general steam vr app.

https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Ultra-RedMere-Technology/dp/B011M32RLI?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0

I only had a chance to test it on lunch so I didnt get to go in game, the cable is exactly 1 foot shorter than the 3 in one. It doesnt go perfectly into the HMD, the cable gets a little smashed when you snap the thingy on the front top back on. It worked fine, just a little tighter than I would like.

I velcro wrapped it every foot down the 3 in one so I now have a workable solution I will test after work.

It is super sad that it is cheaper to buy a 16 dollar cable, 2 dollars worth of velcro than it is to ship the cable to HTC, or even the time I have spent trying to get an RMA. I bill my clients 99 an hour when I do private consulting, 60 if we have a contract or volume business, if I billed HTC, they would owe me $792 at this point.

I will be submitting the chargeback at 5 Pac time today, unless some miracle happens. I think I will mention that the time they owe me makes up for the headset.

u/Clawdius_Talonious · 2 pointsr/Vive

well if you only need the 5m, you might consider sticking with it. At the price difference you may even give an inactive extension at that length a shot, I just can't say it would work or wouldn't definitively. Of course really you'd be better off with using a 5m A to A rather than any extension since you're extending the cables from the PC to the Linkbox.

I mean personally I went with a 10 meter USB extension and a luxe 30' active HDMI extension, but that was because I wanted to go up the wall, across the ceiling, and out to a pillar in the middle of my play area. www.amazon.com/Monoprice-Active-Speed-Premium-Cable/dp/B0186H2JMA is the cable I wound up with that works well for the HDMI. There have been a few threads for shorter runs.

This list may be useful: https://www.reddit.com/r/Vive/wiki/cables

Edit: Amusingly the 10 meter USB extension I use is listed as tested and not working, but it works fine for me.

u/Lettuphant · 2 pointsr/Vive

I am so pumped for you! I love GORN and Devolver are a perfect fit, congratulations.

Your trailer perfectly captures what this game can do; it's the reason I bought this!
It's the only experience that makes everyone lose themselves and punch my wardrobe.

I refuse to take a code; I want to give you money.

u/josiff · 1 pointr/Vive

I bought https://www.amazon.com/MDW-Updated-Version-Protective-Controllers/dp/B06XDLMYMQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1497313793&sr=8-2&keywords=htc+vive+controller+protector

I haven't used them yet, just assembled before work... The side sensors are outside of the cage... but if you bump something lightly it puts my mind at ease compared to just the controller taking the bump.

The plastic is a little flexible since it isn't as hard as the controller plastic... but I don't think it would save anything if you punched it through a wall since I don't think the plastic is really that strong enough.

If I remember to update this after I use them and bump something I'll let you know.

u/Ogg_Vorbis · 1 pointr/Vive

I don't know about him, but to extend my Vive by 30 feet to my front room I purchased this active HDMI cable and this Ethernet 4-Port USB Extender. I think the USB extender is more useful than an active USB cable as you have 4 different ports to add things like keyboards, mice, or racing wheels, and you also have the option to extend it further in the future just by buying another Ethernet cable.

u/thelegendofme · 1 pointr/Vive

My gf revealed that I'm getting an early birthday present and that it's a vive. That's good because now I'm doing research on how I'm going to set mine up. I'm looking at getting a long USB and HDMI cable to run downstairs from my main PC since my HTPC isn't powerful enough. The distance is approximately 9 meters (~30 feet). Seems like an active USB extender and Active HDMI cable would be fine for that distance. Unless USB over Ethernet would be better.

Another question is: if I take the mini display port on the link box and plug it into a TV (with an HDMI adapter or something) would it display anything? Would like my TV to show what the Vive is seeing so people can watch. But if that doesn't work I'll just use the steam streaming.

Edit: list of products I'm looking at, if anyone has opinions on it.

+1 for the over-ear, open-backed headphone. I use these, Sennheiser HD 558, and I love the quality of sound without the environmental disconnectedness of backed phones or plugs/buds. They stay on well, and the cable management is pretty easy, I just wrap up the majority of the cable with a twist tie, and let it hang over my back. Can't even tell its there. Plus, I can easily disconnect and use the headphones for non-VR stuff too.

u/socsa · 3 pointsr/Vive

You can get a 50' active USB cable from Amazon for $20. I've had mind for three years now, and am currently using it with my Vive. Granted, it is only USB 2.0, but still. $65 is pretty steep.

Edit - looks like active USB 3.0 cables are around $35 for a 33' cable.

u/MayBeTall · 2 pointsr/Vive

I bought these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XDLMYMQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They make the controllers very heavy. After taking both the protective shell and skin off the controllers it felt like the controllers had no weight to them at all. I took them off because I was having tracking issues and because I'm not doing anything but development right now. Most likely the tracking issues are my own fault - my setup isn't the best and I haven't taken the time to improve it.

I am 6'5" or so. I hit my ceiling when playing games, so the shell is great for protecting my controllers. I'd recommend them for problem games but not for full time use.

Edit: Not on topic but this is the best accessory I've bought. Two switches to turn the lighthouses off. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CWNMB86/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

u/RingoFreakingStarr · 7 pointsr/Vive

This smaller Anker one lasts me just as long as the one HTC shipped with the adapter; around 2.5 hours of continuous use.

This larger Anker one lasts me well over 4 hours. I haven't actually had it die on me yet; my longest playsession since getting the adapter has been around 4 and a half hours. It is decently bulky but it does fit into the included battery clip that the adapter comes with. It's just too large length wise so it will stick out the top of the clip. I wouldn't worry about it falling out of the clip though since it is a snug fit.

Also, this wall charger with QC 3.0 ports works with powering the wireless adapter. I've used it for when I'm doing sim stuff in the corner of my room. Having to plug in the wired Vive Pro cables for sim use is a real hassle so I just keep the wireless adapter on and plug the adapter into the wall charger. Works flawlessly.

u/Santiagodraco · 1 pointr/Vive

Sure. Here's what I'm using for my wireless setup:

Charger: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01IUTIUEA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Battery: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N3TVRP2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Vest (with front pockets to hold the battery, 2 at once if desired): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XF27TY5/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The vest is a MUCH better approach than a belt clip, imo. I don't even notice it's there even with the bigger 26k battery. Love it. I'm imagining when I finally pickup a high end gaming notebook and slide it in the back for fully untethered gaming. Of course I'd use the wired setup for that :)

u/zarralax · 1 pointr/Vive

I'm really confused on which cables to buy. I looked at the wiki and thread and I'm not even sure if I need USB 2 or 3.

So far in my cart:

Cable Matters SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Type A Male to Female Active Extension Cable 10 Meters/32.8 Feet https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DMFFL2W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Bmkqxb9XQSP4J

Will these work? So many conflicting success / failure posts.

Also do you extend from the PC to the breakout box? Or extend from the breakout box?

I wish HTC / Valve would bless what cables are compatible.

Thanks.

u/Ampsnotvolts · 3 pointsr/Vive

Exactly!
But honestly the small hangers they include are pretty good and running your light house up to a permanent place on the wall isn't a bad deal considering it gets rid of any space concerns.

But consider something like this as well - https://www.amazon.com/Etekcity-Household-Appliances-Unlimited-Connections/dp/B00DQELHBS/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1551114394&sr=8-6&keywords=remote+switch

So you can turn stuff on and off from one area and don't have to plug/unplug each lighthouse when you want to use or put away. Something like this lets you just control power remotely. I had AUKEY ones that apparently aren't sold anymore so I can't link them. There should be some better ones that are smaller in my opinion, but it made turning off the whir/whine sound of the lighthouses much easier than plugging/unplugging them over and over.

u/Omahaniley · 1 pointr/Vive

I do a VR night at a local pub and have used the mounts I'll link below also. They do a great job. Also if you don't want to use your stock lighthouse electric adapters (I can't use mine because I have them ran under wire covers) these work great also. Just will need an extension cord.

and if you REALLY get into it, here's the best entry level HOTAS,

Also when you run out of buttons or don't want to fiddle with alternative button/key bindings, (though you can, Elite is very impressive in this regard) Voice Attack makes for easy and customizable voice controls/macros on the cheap. There's nothing like approaching a station and telling your computer, "prep for landing" and having all your systems automatically switch. Love it.

I bought Sennheiser HD558's based on a recomendation in another thread. They were described as good audio quality, good soundstage, good enough not great bass. But extremely comfortable.

And that is what they are. My legs are worn out long before I even notice the headset. I'm not an audiophile, but the quality is great in my opinion. And they are just under $100 USD.

I highly recommend you grab this. You just press a button and the stations turn on and off. I can even use it way across the house. Makes turning them off freaking quick and when you demo to people it looks cool to just (already have PC on) turn on controllers and hand them the headset as you press 2 buttons on the remote to power on the base stations.

I've had them for ~3 years now for my front room which has lava lamps and other light up geeky stuff. When I got Vive on launch, these puppies were ready to help make startup easy.

I ended up getting a 50ft usb cable and 50ft hdmi last year after someone else recommended it as their setup of choise. It made setting up my vive much less of a headache and I use it every weekend now

This is the best option for now

It's a little tricky to install, but once installed I'm very happy with it. Get the 50mm version, you'll have to cut the nose part because this is intended for a watch, but it's the easy part of the installation

u/Vagrant_Charlatan · 15 pointsr/Vive

Agreed, ED and Onward are the only VR games I've passed 100 hours in. For those looking for a HOTAS and don't want to break the bank, I bought this one 2.5 years ago for $50... it's on prime for $39 now so there's no excuse! It's plug and play for most HOTAS supported games, like ED, as it's a popular one. The Throttle and Joystick do detatch, though there's a cord between them. This might convince you to upgrade for a bigger HOTAS, but it's more than adequate for my occasional Elite Dangerous sessions.

Edit: there's an upgraded version for a few bucks more. Credit to /u/stringentthot

I was originally aiming for 1060 and i5 (on a budget) but found they were just outside of how much I wanted to spend. Aiming for around 700-900. This is the one I was pretty set https://www.amazon.com/CYBERPOWERPC-Xtreme-GXiVR8020A-Gaming-Desktop/dp/B01HNBLHAA

I'm not going for the most powerful beast just yet, just trying to get in the door.

u/coreygriffin · 2 pointsr/Vive

Not to mention the TPCast is only ~$30 cheaper than the official first party supported adapter.

I have the Vive wireless adapter on an OG Vive with the deluxe audio strap and have noticed that it gets uncomfortable on my scalp about 2 hours in. I have a piece of foam between the headstrap and the adapter to absorb the heat. When I say uncomfortable I mean I notice it's getting hot, it's not exactly giving me 3rd degree burns.

Also the official battery does not last 6 hours (at best you're getting about 3 hours), however you can use 3rd party batteries that support QC 3.0. I have a Anker battery that costs less than the Vive one and lasts twice as long. The only caveat is that it takes forever to charge. I typically charge it overnight.

u/ViciousMoth · 1 pointr/Vive

Thanks for letting me and thanks for the update. I was able to find a 3.5mm on Amazon. It even has a review from a Vive owner who uses it for his breakout box, so that's great! It doesn't fit perfect, they said "This metal plug is ever so slightly longer than the OEM cable's, but the important thing is the width, so I don't care." So this is probably as close as we'll get, I'm not able to find anything better.

Leaving the link for others that run into this thread: https://smile.amazon.com/12V1-5A-Supply-Adapter-Switching-Cameras/dp/B018JL0YIY

u/wescotte · 2 pointsr/Vive

Chances are you'll want to angle them down for optimal coverage. You can mount them directly into concrete/brick. Just drill with a masonry bit and use anchors.

However, as another user pointed out if you are putting up shelves and they are wood you could just attach the mounting bracket right to the shelving or purchase a clamp mount like this, this or this. The bolt size is a 1/4 20 which is the standard for consumer cameras tripod mounts so you can find tons of mounting options out there.

If you search a bit you can find tons of mounting alternative threads like this.

u/FumbledAgain · 1 pointr/Vive

I think they're priced relatively reasonably, with the exception of the Link Box. The base stations seem overpriced until you consider just how much R&D went into them. Consider further that Valve and HTC have promised support of third-party controllers and HMDs, and you're left with a scenario that the base stations are the only thing left that you have to buy from Valve, so it's fair to make a bit of profit on that.

The link boxes, however, aren't fairly priced. It's just a link box. It doesn't come with a male-to-male USB cable (something most folks don't have lying around), nor an HDMI cable (more common) or a power adapter (no one will have this!). You can't even buy it from HTC separately; you have to order one from Amazon. Considering that this and the other cables add $15-$20 more, and you have to source them separately, I think the link box is a bit of a rip-off.

I bought it anyway, of course, along with the cables and a pair of extra pair of base stations so that I can keep one set up at home and one in my studio. But it definitely sucked.

u/arnoldstrife · 1 pointr/Vive

I suggest replacing the bundle,

https://www.amazon.com/HTC-Vive-3-1-Cable-pc/dp/B01MQW49B3/

They have the actual OEM cable. Otherwise, it might be a tight fit to put in another cable. You'll need very thin connectors to fit in the slot on top of the headset.

https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=13590

Something like that would probably work, notice the very small head compared to the golden connector. But it becomes a durability issue. A general off the shelf cable isn't usually meant to be moved around and tug at all day.

u/BerZirx · 5 pointsr/Vive

I have my entire vive setup (both base stations and link box) connected to a remote outlet I bought on Amazon.

https://www.amazon.com/Etekcity-Wireless-Electrical-Household-Appliances/dp/B00DQELHBS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1504725565&sr=8-3&keywords=remote+outlet

I turn them on with a press of a button only when I use my vive. It works great! If you can, I recommend doing this so the stations and headset aren't always getting power.

u/Color_blinded · 1 pointr/Vive

I would not recommend the saitek if you want your joystick to last. You would be considered lucky if yours lasts an entire year. Instead, I would recommend getting two of these (using two joysticks is amazing), or one of these, or get a 16000M and buy a separate throttle (you can find the x52 throttle on ebay. The mouse nub on the throttle is worth having).

u/SergeS2K · 1 pointr/Vive

Depending on the length you need for running up the wall into the attic, here is what I got that works perfectly (As you need to be careful about which HDMI and USB cords you get).

u/Epsilon748 · 2 pointsr/Vive

Welcome! I have a few suggestions that might help you out

  • For you connectivity issues- you can get a cheap $10 displayport to mini displayport cable so your display can stay on HDMI. It seems you already know that, but hopefully you won't need your workaround very long

  • For the sickness, have you set the IPD (Inter pupillary distance) on your HMD? There's a small knob on the right. You can measure this yourself with a ruler and a mirror, or have your optician do it. I noticed when I didn't have mine right that I'd get a headache and nausea after exiting VR.
u/laserob · 1 pointr/Vive

Not sure about that one in particular but I much prefer the mini dp cable setup as was having connection issues with hdmi. I've used this one works great: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00YOQYQWY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_M5EyybE2C5469

u/glassdragon · 2 pointsr/Vive

I received this 15' displayport cable extension today and have tested it to my satisfaction that it works well (combined with the stock Pro displayport cable). I also use this 15' USB cable. If you would prefer to extend the power cord without having a giant junction visible of that big HTC wall plug to an extension cord, you can use this power plug, combined with this extender.

u/Droll_Papagiorgio · 13 pointsr/Vive

For folks who aren't interested in going the ethernet route (if you don't have to), I've been using these two cables since I got my vive on May 2nd. No issues and runs about 35-45 feet from my bedroom to my spare room.

USB: http://amzn.com/B0040IG1A6
HDMI: http://amzn.com/B008D5EUMS

I also bought a 2nd USB cable and an unpowered USB hub to extend my racing wheel and HOTAS stick to my spare room.

Works perfectly. I set-up my room-scale settings without leaving my room by using Chrome Remote Desktop on my computer and smart-phone. If you've got the space for it, a dedicated room for the Vive is so worth it.

u/JasonYaya · 1 pointr/Vive

I'm sure that will work fine. I and at least one other person have had good results with this one.

You don't want to use any type of adhesive, the lighthouses vibrate, which will make it fall much more easy. Not to mention the amount of torque they would have on the wall since they stick out from the wall. Maybe the extremely heavy duty adhesives will work, but they will definitely take the paint off of your wall.

I got this one for use with my HD558s. I'm then running a 30 ft long headphone extension (15ft from computer to link box, 15 ft for Vive cable) back to a Behringer headphone amp and then a DAC. I also have other 15 ft extensions (DisplayPort, USB, power) from the link box back to my PC.

The end result? 30 ft of Vive leash, headphone cable is cable-wrapped back to a proper headphone amp and DAC. No plugging/unplugging, and good sound quality to boot.

Granted, take everything I just said above with the understanding that I don't have a Vive yet, and it might work great...or not!

You'll notice the Amazon page says there is a newer version of the item available, but it's a suction cup mount - I wouldn't trust suction cups myself, however if you require suction cups (because the clamps won't work for you), the newer version might be what you're looking for.

I already had a shelf, and a door that always stays open, so I got a pair of these

Mine are on the celling but with wireless sockets. Make shure you don't move them while switching the modes or you'll have to recalibrate.

I use these but portable only in the sense that I go to my parents/friends/my home with it all. Not demoing everywhere.
