First you have to have Windows 10 (NOT 'N' ... just in case you're in EU where I think that's the default version).

In addition to VR cover, a company called 'Studio Form Creative' makes a top head strap which helps with comfort. However these straps do the same thing for way cheaper.

You shouldn't *have* to have Bluetooth: I've actually turned off my Bluetooth radio because the built-in in the HMD works better, and the PC BT interferes with the tracking dongles for my hybrid tracking setup.

Speaking of that: you can use lighthouses for tracking, but need either Vive or Index controllers with them, as well as two steam controller dongles. The setup is simple but a bit involved. This is what I usually do these days, as Index controllers are amazing and the lighthouse tracking gets rid of the few tracking issues WMR has.

Revive works and you can play a good portion of Oculus games with it! There were a bunch of conflicting changes between steamVR and the OculusSDK a while back though, and the Revive author had to make some kind of hacky changes, so you either have to use the current version of Revive along with a really old version of SteamVR and some games are broken with that, or the 'preview' version of Revive with current steamVR but a couple different games are broken with that. The revive author is working to get everything meshed back together in a good working state so it should all work properly again at some point.

I've never used vorpX, but have used Virtual Desktop for playing flat games in a 'virtual monitor' in VR, and it works quite well.

Good luck! I agree that O+ isn't really entry level though you do have an 'upgrade path' of sorts with being able to use different tracking and controllers. :)

u/Grandmastersexsay69 · 3 pointsr/WindowsMR

My first run one has been great and problem free. From what I've heard from people with the newer headsets, is that they have indeed fixed the issues for the pro version from the HP store. I've heard of a person having to return two consumer versions to Amazon, so I don't know if they have the fixed units in yet. I'm glad other people are finally getting the experience what I've been having for months. Truly an amazing headset.

I would reccomend people upgrade the headphones. I paired my reverb with this;

https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M50x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR86/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=audiotechnica+ath+m50x&qid=1568148016&s=gateway&sprefix=audiot&sr=8-3

and it has made a massive difference in audio quality and immersion. The Reverb already has the best visual quality on the market, might as well give it the best audio quality too.

This item has definitely helped keep me in my place and I imagine it would be great for beginners. When you step off, it's easy to get right back in the middle without trying to manage the boundary lines. I love it.

Super cheap too

u/telos0 · 4 pointsr/WindowsMR

I bought a Vive Link Box to use as a signal/power booster in the middle, and it works great. This cured all my dropouts and audio glitches, as well as giving my system a Bluetooth radio.

This setup works great:

  1. Vive Link Box
  2. Vive Link Box Power Supply
  3. 12 ft Power cable extension for Vive Link Box
  4. 10 ft USB 3.0 extension cable
  5. 10 ft Amazon Basics HDMI cable
  6. Wire wrap to keep everything tidy

Make sure you power cycle the Vive Link Box whenever you plug or unplug anything into it to for it to reinitialize and detect the headset.

I really wish there was a more elegant solution, but so far this works the best for me.
u/takeshikun · 1 pointr/WindowsMR

Can't speak from experience but seems the biggest issue most people have is just the power component. Found this USB on Amazon that says it's been tested with a few headsets, then this HDMI repeater to boost the HDMI side, just need a cable for it as well. Like I said, haven't tried any of this myself, but Amazon returns are easy enough to be worth a shot if I was in your situation since they do flat out say VR headset names in the descriptions of each.

I have both and they are great batteries.

Extensions that work:

@OP, this is the best approach and what worked for me, I have an older USB extension cable (just a 3ft male-to-female USB cable, something like this... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NH11R3I/ref=sxts_k2p-hero-vn_tr_lp_2?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=8011851592090061987&pd_rd_wg=jCbR6&pf_rd_r=DVEH1AHD133DNTZW9REC&pf_rd_s=desktop-sx-top-slot&pf_rd_t=301&pd_rd_i=B00NH11R3I&pd_rd_w=JFXcW&pf_rd_i=usb+extension+cable+3ft&pd_rd_r=1270d36a-3c5b-405d-8fb3-2149487b3e33&ie=UTF8&qid=1526999446&sr=2)

My understanding is that the cable wiring is USB2.0 compliant and not USB3.0 and so physically limits the port to a USB2.0 connection effectively forcing the 3.0/2.0/1.1 capable port into 2.0 'backward compatibility mode'. As u/Vindalo0 said, it makes no performance difference if you use a USB2.0 extension cos it will be limited to 2.0 no matter what port you use (unless you can find a USB1.1!). You should pick the length of the extension cable run to allow you to move the adapter to the best location to pick up the BT radio signals from your controllers, line of sight would be ideal but just getting it away from the birds nest of wires behind the PC is a great start.

u/justPassingThrou64 · 1 pointr/WindowsMR

I haven't used anything where a mic improved the experience- I haven't seen Cortana be able to do anything truly useful yet. Regardless, I inline it with this, so that I have an ANALOG volume control as well. (Gotta love analog- it works with all of my accessories and sound sources. And there's two of them included).

> How reliable are the controllers compared to the Vive?

Fine, I've had no issues. Been playing Skyrim with my Odyssey+. Comfort wise about the same.

> Do you have a source for a cheap replacement controller?

Unfortunately the controllers aren't sold separately. Only option is new headset or eBay. YOu may be able to use standard WMR controllers, but same problem.

> Could you show me what extension cable I'll need to purchase?

You shouldn't need one, that said I've used these with my WMR headsets

> How about rechargeable batteries? Do you have a suggestion for a good set of rechargeable batteries and charger to use with the controllers?

Any AA batteries should do. I have no recommendations myself.

> Do you have a link for a reliable USB Bluetooth 4.0 that I should pickup?

Odyssey+ comes with built in BT. OG (Original Odyssey) does not, it will work with any dongle you have. Though its best to have it be line of side (and not under a desk or something. I used this dongle for my demo machines.

> I was told the Odyssey may require some kind of light blanket or cover??? What's the deal with this?

If its what I think you mean, there's a small gap on the side by your eyes for the O+. Which can let some light in. It's generally more noticable on the O+, the OG doesn't really have the gap. VR Cover makes face padding you can buy.

> Is there anything else I should know about this system prior to getting it?

In order to play SteamVR games you need the Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR pluggin. Make sure that where ever your play area is has some things for the tracking cameras to see, along with adequate lighting and nothing to reflective. (Don't try and play in an empty room with nothing but beige carpet and walls and no light).

u/mistrzuszabli · 2 pointsr/WindowsMR

> If your laptop has an internal bluetooth, we also recommend you to disable it and only use an external dongle. My personal setup also has a wireless keyboard/mouse with a separate receiver, and the two

I bought USB-BT400 and disabled internal bluetooth. Controllers work great now! Thanks! I also connected it as far as possible from my thunderbolt.

I'm glad I've asked around as I thought it's just how motion tracking works with headset driven tracking.

u/Lancks · 1 pointr/WindowsMR

USB is the harder one. You'll need a very good mobo or an extension card (at least PCIE x4 to support the needed bandwidth/power). For the cable, an active extension cable worked for me - a passive cable would not.

Edit: I used this cable, but it does still give me static if I try to use headphones. Otherwise it works great.

The best ones I've come across are these but if you can't get them from Amazon, I'm not sure how you'd get them. This is their website: Healing Shield. Good luck!

For the Samsung, we use the 49mm ones, I'm not sure which size the Lenovo would need.

u/Icebreaker808 · 1 pointr/WindowsMR

Hello,

So I think you are going to find it difficult to get anything over 6' to work.

I tried multiple setups finally getting something that worked. HDMI seems to be fine at any length extension, the USB cable seems to be the really tricky part.

I tried 3 different USB extension cables before finding one that worked, but only at 6'. Anything longer and would have issues.
This is the one that worked for me :
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NH134L6/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Someone had recommended using the VIVE link box to overcome this problem with longer USB extension cables. I think I remember in a few threads someone using 15' or 20' extension cables with the Vive link box.

It is expensive but I remember in a few threads I had started regarding Extension cables, that user have reported it alleviating issues with longer USB extension cables. May be worth a go.

hope that helps.

u/Volanir · 1 pointr/WindowsMR

Sounds like using an extension cable from a 2.0 port might take care of it for you then. Something like this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NH11R3I/ref=twister_B00SIT9PRO?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Though I haven't used that so I can't say it will definitely work.

u/Alundre · 2 pointsr/WindowsMR

If it helps you at all, I ordered a 6' AmazonBasics HDMI extension and a 6' AmazonBasics USB 3 extension and tried them last night and they work absolutely fine. I can literally walk anywhere in my room now and I didn't even have to move my PC :)

I also really like how these should now act as a quick release so if my kids were to pull on the cables too far or something, it should come apart there instead of pulling on my PC. Here are the links to the ones I ordered...

I have the Dell headset, so I'm not extreamly familiar with the Lenovo, but I'll still give you some input.

Glasses: Perfectly fine. No issues as long as you don't tighten the headset around your head to the point that your glasses rub against the lenses of the headset. (Though, doing that also cuts off a bit of circulation so don't do that period.)

Headphones: I have the Razor Man O' War wireless headset. It's... less than ideal. The headphones are wireless, which is the true plus, but they're big enough that they push the headset around if they aren't sitting just right. This causes you to need to adjust the headset/headphones often.

A good option is to buy these: https://www.amazon.com/Bionik-Mantis-Headphone-PlayStation-VR/dp/B0735X5M4X

They fit/work on most WMR headsets.

u/BluJayM · 3 pointsr/WindowsMR

I've been thinking about doing something like this.

As for the HDMI/USB extension, I have an Odyssey and have been using the 6 foot versions of these things with pretty great results so far:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A30FLE2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00C7S2FRE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

However, I've heard that going longer than something like 10 feet requires an active cable, but I don't know the specifics of it.

u/mwiemarc · 2 pointsr/WindowsMR

I've been using a DP to HDMI Converter in combination with an 1 meter HDMI extension cable and a 2 meter USB 3.0 extension cable.

I'm not sure about the HDMI cable it was laying around at home, i bought the DP->HDMI Converter and the USB extension on Amazon https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B01M8PXNP4, https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00NH134L6.

I use this to get the required connections on the front of my PC to remove the headset when i let my cat in xD and for more comfort :D

I don't see any changes in performace with the extensions used.

u/Nerdygamer · 1 pointr/WindowsMR

Not sure how true this is, but in another thread someone suggested getting batteries with 2500mAH + since it would make the lights brighter and track better.

I know you already have an extension cable, but when I switched out my old extender for one with a single booster it really improved my tracking: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0179MXKU8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I've read that certain motherboards work better than others for extensions without power. That being said, my Odyssey+ with an Asus H170 motherboard has worked fine with this 6ft HDMI extension and this 6ft USB extension.

u/Crashboy96 · 3 pointsr/WindowsMR

Sure.

This is the pack with the charger I purchased. The charger is normally $20 so I figured an extra ~$6 for 4 Eneloop Pros is a good deal.

For extra batteries, I just purchased these Amazon Basics high capacity AA rechargeable batteries as they have relatively similar MAh and are decently priced.

Edit: fixed second link

u/TheBoltUpright · 1 pointr/WindowsMR

Samsung O/O+ if you get it for $300 or less, Lenovo Explorer next best if the difference in price is a factor.

O+ has *slightly* more width if you wear glasses. If so, also look into the 49mm protection for the lenses so they don't get scratched by your glasses:

I can confirm that the AmazonBasics USB 3.0 6ft and HDMI 2.0 6ft extension cables work perfectly with my Acer headset and laptop.

u/kylebisme · 2 pointsr/WindowsMR

I'm pretty sure 3.5 x 1.35mm is just a hair too big for the power adapter as I ordered these extension cables the other day and the male end doesn't quite fit in the linkbox. I've borrowed a universal adapter from a friend which works but the plug size isn't labeled so I just ordered this one which is advertised for use with the linkbox but doesn't mention the plug size either.

Also, for USB I'm using this 15' cable, and for HDMI this 25' cable which I already had from a previous setup. And since it seems power from the USB port can be and issue, here's the powered USB card I'm using.

u/spacedog_at_home · 1 pointr/WindowsMR

I used this USB3 and this HDMI 2m extension cable, they work great on my Visor.

you can just use usb rechargable lithium ions which provide constant 1.5. They're great, or these, which provide 3.2...ish.

Yes the batteries that was packed with it last less than a day for me. Maybe I could have wait a bit more since the charge meter in the cliffhouse is not very accurate.

I bough Panasonic Eneloop Pro with their charger and they last very long. They worth the price.

Exactly. I'm using this 16ft cable along with an additional 1.5ft male to male cable (in order to have a male connecter on end to plug into vive link box):

Works flawlessly. No issues whatsoever. Only thing is you have to power cycle the link box after you plug the Odyssey in otherwise it won't be detected.

I use ATH M50x with Mod Mic 5 for VR Chat. Though that's pretty much the only game I play VR-wise at this point so I doubt it'll work for Pavlov since it's fast paced. You gotta get the USB Media adapter for Modmic though, since without it, it sounds like ass.

Any decent quality thick 6ft extension cables should work fine for most cases, but with longer cables there's might be problems. I use these (USB 6ft. and HDMI 6ft.) extension cables made by UGreen and they works great with my Lenovo Explorer.

At the time I got mine, people were recommending these Panasonic Eneloops: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JHKSL1O/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They've been good to me so far.

I've got these, they look similar to what OP has:

https://www.amazon.de/Orzero-Entwurfs-Lanyards-Adhesive-Virtual-Kabel-Management/dp/B06XFMY8G9/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1539383151&sr=8-2&keywords=vr+hook

US link: https://www.amazon.com/Retractable-Management-Headset-MDW-Adhesive/dp/B01M6EB8DM/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1539383439&sr=8-6&keywords=vr+cable

The thing applies to the ceiling with a very strong kind of sticky glue and applies to any surface (I thought it wouldn't apply to mine, since it's all rough, but it holds on fine). Then you can put that black part through the hook applied to the ceiling, which then has a retractable cable in it. Connect the black clip to the cable and put your vr cables through the black clip and you're done. So the only hing that is kind of hard/impossible to remove is the sticky part with the hook in it. The rest can be plug-and-play removed.

So I experienced this with my Samsung Odyssey+ even after purchasing a usb 3.0 10' repeater cable that was said to work well with the oculus. I ended up grabbing a usb 3.0 powered hub that i connected to the repeater cable and plugged the powered hub in to a regular power outlet and the issue was resolved. My current issue is that the HDMI cable I used to extend it by 10' caused severe signal disconnects and visual "noise".

Here is the equipment I used:

Repeater cable: https://www.amazon.com/CableCreation-Extension-Extender-Repeater-Booster/dp/B0179MXKU8/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=USB+3.0+REPEATER&qid=1549769397&s=gateway&sr=8-3

It comes with a HDMI and USB 3.0 permanently connected to it. If you're wanting extenders, I bought these off Amazon

AmazonBasics High-Speed Male to Female HDMI Extension Cable - 6 Feet https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01D5H90L4?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

AmazonBasics USB 3.0 Extension Cable - A-Male to A-Female - 6 Feet (2 Pack) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B014RWATK2?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

And I use this Bluetooth adapter Microsoft reccomends

Plugable USB Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy Micro Adapter (Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Raspberry Pi, Linux Compatible; Classic Bluetooth, and Stereo Headset Compatible) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009ZIILLI?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

Keep in mind you'll also need a USB 3.0 port. They're colored blue. The HMD also plugs into this, in addition to the HDMI.

I’m using something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Retractable-Management-Headset-MDW-Adhesive/dp/B01M6EB8DM/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1540916930&sr=8-4&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=vr+cable&dpPl=1&dpID=414oxYbQLfL&ref=plSrch

There are several of those on Amazon (search for VR cable management).

I’m only using two pulleys though but they come with a little hex wrench so you can set a stopper to give them a minimum length (so they don’t pull all the way to your high ceiling)

I use these with my Dell. Had to modify them a bit to get good fitment, but they work well! No mic though so I bought a passthrough lapel mic I have yet to try out.

Bioniks make a pair for the PSVR headset https://www.amazon.com/Bionik-Mantis-Headphone-PlayStation-VR/dp/B0735X5M4X
and I think I recall reading somewhere that someone has tried them on a wmr headset and they work fine.

PSVR headphones that work fine with my Lenovo Explorer

EDIT: I see above that you need a mic. Mantis doesn't have a mic.

u/Timboman2000 · 3 pointsr/WindowsMR

Powered extensions can, Passive ones usually don't.

This limits how far you can extend it (usually max 6-10ft depending on your HMD & GPU).

I use these with no notable issues with my Dell Visor: 6ft. USB Ext. 6ft. HDMI Ext.

You can get HDMI and USB 3.0 cable extensions that review well to work with WMR headsets, unless it's the overall weight you're worried about, in which case some hang it from the ceiling in retractable pulley system.

u/ScottySF · 1 pointr/WindowsMR

In my paranoia, I bought 6ft and 10ft versions of both, as it depends on your motherboard, BIOS settings, PSU, etc. 6ft is a standard I would expect most setups to work with. Here are the recommended products that I've seen posted around:

USB

HDMI
