It's not about being deep it's about psychology and automatic responses, people become happy when they see or hear happy people and it gives you an advantage.

So a kinda good example of this is canned or fake laughter in comedy shows, the audience tends to hate it and to be honest I don't think i know anyone who even likes it. But comedy shows put it in anyway, why? because it makes jokes funnier especially bad jokes, and if people think a show is funny they watch it more. I would give you evidence for this but i can't find it right now sorry. But it was brought to my attention via this book: https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/cka/Influence-Psychology-Persuasion-Robert-B-PhD-Cialdini/006124189X

(the audiobook is quite good too)

Often people find it easy to fake happy smiles, but the eyes require much more work and happy eyes are the key, in my opinion, to having a happy looking face. I try to think of something that makes me happy (my first kiss, maybe a good thing that's happened recently etc.) and that tends to take care of my eyes.

As in more defined vs more chubby but happy it depends, in a social situation more happy is better and in a situation where they can see by your body that you aren't fat then happy is better too. Only face close ups are when I'd think about maybe avoiding the round faced "issue". It's something you'll have to check in the mirror to see for yourself.

u/arrowbread · 7 pointsr/amiugly

The picture where you're smiling is wonderful! It makes such a difference to your face- I'm afraid you may have a case of RBF, but that doesn't mean you're condemned to a life of being unattractive or anything!

I definitely think the bangs are a good choice. Since you have a very long face, they balance you out wonderfully. Just make sure you style them every day- a round brush like this one and a blow dryer (even if your hair is already dry) are all you need to make them look really nice every day. It shouldn't take more than 3 minutes to do.

As for makeup, I'd recommend looking for an eyebrow brush that's close to your natural hair color that also has a spoolie (the thing that looks like a mascara wand) on the end. Use the spoolie first to clean up your brows and get the hairs in place, and then use the pencil to fill in the color. Any stylist at an eyebrow waxing place can give you some good tips.

With that, mascara, a bit of cream blush, and some natural-looking lipstick, you'll really frame your face and highlight your natural beauty! If you're looking to really step up your game, a good BB cream or light foundation will always help balance out your skin tone. But for ease and time's sake, stick with: brows, lashes, cheeks, and lips. I think that'll take you so far!

u/prairielily · 1 pointr/amiugly

Definitely follow the advice about your haircut! The shorter bangs looks much better on you. But please don't put giant clips in it anymore. Either cut your bangs so they stay out of your eyes, or use a small and discrete bobby pin.

Your hair looks like a finer version of mine - I've had good luck in the past with Aussie's Moist and with Yes to Carrots shampoos and conditioners. When I blowdry, I start by working a little bit of Biolage Thermal Active Repair Cream throughout and spritz a little bit of Rusk Thickr Myst on the top of my head because my hair's a little thinner there. You can dye your hair, by the way. Some brands, like Aveda, use dyes that aren't too bad for your hair, or you can try a henna-based dye that tells you that it's going to be dark. But only if you really want to try it!

I think lip gloss is more important for you than mascara, personally. A glossy pink shade would really light up your face. Your freckles are gorgeous, so don't try to cover them up or minimize them. I would suggest makeup that looks fairly natural.

For your eyebrows: go get them done professionally at a spa. It should cost less than $20, and it will make things much easier for you. Once they've done it, you can just inspect with a pair of tweezers every morning and remove the short little hairs that start growing back. To make it even easier, get a pair of really good quality tweezers made by Rubis or Tweezerman. It really makes a HUGE difference. So much easier than trying to figure out how to arch them yourself!

For mascara/eyeliner: waterproof mascara, like others have said. You might have to experiment with brands to see what works for you. When you buy something, ask if you can return it if you don't like it when you use it. For eyeliner, you can either get a pencil and practice, or you can get an angled eyeliner brush. With the brush, take some eyeshadow, and rub the end of the brush in it. Tap the excess off, and then use the brush to carefully line your eyes right next to the lash line. You can make it as thick or thin as you want depending on how you use the brush. Plus, you're only limited in terms of colours by the eyeshadows you have! Dark brown would be a good everyday colour for you, and purples look really good on brown-eyed girls.

When you want to get it all off, put a little bit of olive oil on a cotton pad, press it to your closed eye for a few seconds, and then gently wipe it off. Wash your face after to remove the oil residue.

Source: I'm really, really lazy about beauty, and my mother is a cosmetician. Put the two together, and my effort to results ratio is top-notch.

Edit: I think pink looks better on you than dark blue.

i definitely don't think you're ugly, you have a very pretty face! however, my main tips would be:

  1. you should tidy up your brows (i use this cos i hate the thought of plucking or waxing, but plucking and waxing are the more painful but long lasting solutions). once they're tidied up, use a brow pencil to fill them & a brow gel to keep them in place.
  2. do you brush your hair dry? i used to brush my hair when it was dry and it made it so frizzy and unmanageable. only brush your hair when it's wet, right out of the shower! if it's damaged and/or dry, i would invest in a moisturizing hair mask, or make one at home because there's plenty of tutorials online for a moisturizing hair mask.
  3. use moisturizer and primer, in that order, before you put on makeup! it'll make your skin look more youthful and less cakey when you put on foundation and concealer.
  4. speaking of skin, have a good skincare routine and drink lots of water! korean skincare is amazing, so here's a step-by-step for a korean skincare routine.
  5. a good natural makeup routine i always use is moisturizer -> primer -> concealer -> (optional) foundation -> (optional) contouring/highlight -> brow pencil & gel -> (optional) eyeliner -> white/nude eyeliner on bottom waterline -> mascara -> cherry chapstick -> clear lip gloss -> setting spray.
  6. drink lots of water, participate in at least mild exercise, take daily vitamins (i take these), and eat healthy! idk if you already do that, but a good diet, exercising and being hydrated can bring somebodies appearance up a whole point. a healthy lifestyle just makes you more attractive.

at some point this just turned into general tips, lol rip. but i do think you're very pretty! you've got gorgeous big eyes and a nice face and lip shape.

Ok here’s what’s up. I’m an Asian woman from the US so I’m speaking from personal experience.

Asian men have it really hard when it comes to dating. There’s stereotypes about small dicks and a lack of masculinity and being emotionally withdrawn that make shit really fucking hard for Asian men. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you this, but I just want to preface what I have to say with the sad and, frankly, disappointing truth.

Your look falls outside the realm of “average.” Your hair is long, which is usually a feminizing quality. You’re slender, you play an instrument, you wear a lot of black.

So, I could tell you to cut the hair, bulk up, and really emphasize your masculinity, but here’s where you have to make your choice. Would you rather find dating success as someone you are not or wait for someone to appreciate who you are?

There’s a few things you can do to enhance yourself now. Stand up straight, a slouch is not becoming on anyone. You can get a posture corrector online, they’re straps that go around your shoulders to help remind you to pull your shoulders back. That alone will impact your look dramatically. Always—yes, I mean always—have your shoulder blades pulled back.

You can clean up your hair a bit. If you wanted, you could get it cut just below your jawline. That’s a much more “acceptable” look these days (cc: Jon Snow).

You definitely have some great curl definition, but as a curly-haired Asian myself, it took me forever to find the right hair care regiment:

  1. I’m sure you know this, but don’t brush your hair except before a shower. Immediately before washing your hair, brush it out completely. Using a wide-tooth comb is preferred.
  2. Use a low-sulfate shampoo. These shampoos don’t bubble much, but they don’t coat your hair with gross chemicals, either.
  3. Use a hydrating conditioner. Put it in your hair, then get your whole head wet but don’t rinse it out. Do the rest of your shower regiment here what with the soap et al. Leave the conditioner in as long as you can, if it’s one minute or 20.
  4. Rinse out most of the conditioner. I actually prefer to rinse it all out, then add a tiny bit more.
  5. Get out of the shower, and squeeze your hair out gently using something like a cotton t-shirt. Terry cloth (towel material) creates mini tangles that result in frizz.
  6. Use a curl defining gel while your hair is wet and use the curl scrunch technique.
  7. You can let your hair air dry, or if you want to go all-out you can get a [cup diffuser](Conair Volumizing Diffuser https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000JQY6DM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_on.zDbH1D7ZQS) for a hair dryer. When you use the diffuser, you hold the hair dryer so it’s pointing straight up, and you just drop clumps of hair into the bowl of the diffuser. You then raise the hair dryer to cup as much of your hair as you can and you sit there. This allows your hair to curl as it would naturally.

Beyond that, I would suggest asking someone else for fashion advice because I’m not good at giving it, but I think your wardrobe could take an update if you’d like to give it one.

Also choose between clean shaven and not because the Asian fuzz isn’t flattering on anyone.

Let me end with this: you have a gorgeous face, you have gorgeous hair, and you are not undateable. If you feel as though you are, that may actually be the culprit. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy: “No one wants to date me, therefore I’m not going to go introduce myself to that person over there because I don’t want to be rejected.” Chin up (gorgeous chin), your time will come.

You could do with losing a little weight, I think the problem is you don't carry it with confidence. Sounds idiotic but most girls don't care about a guys weight if he is a charmer. To improve your confidence shift a few pounds, do it for you not for the bullies. http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diet-basics.html

You're pretty average looking, which is a good thing, its better to look average than look like a monster. You can improve with confidence and a little styling. Try getting some hair product and play around with your hair a little at the moment it looks a little flat.

A combination of /r/seduction, /r/dating_advice and /r/relationship_advice could help with your approach to women. I also recommend this book its not a dating books its effectively a profiling guide and it goes through the steps for reading body language really well.

hush you. Half of being attractive is confidence! Get some you pretty girl you! :P (I'm going to hold any stronger compliments for the next 4 months... :P)

I understand... when I was 17 I wore far too much make-up too. It's easy to confuse excess/over the top with dramatic. Maybe let her practice more on you so she can get better at making-up pale girls! Less is more and using the eyebrow as the stopping point generally looks streetwalker-ish (of course you still looked lovely!) :P (Full Disclosure: I'm the straight boy who works in fashion and the former goth who taught my mother how to apply make-up. Sigh. Anyways Making Faces is great reference for making dramatic the pro way...)

cliques. yes. that is the word I meant. :P

Ok; boxer/dancer/Doctor Who/firefly girl... All I can say is; Nrrrd Girl I don't diserve you.... (Sorry... been holding that in since last night...)

Ok, final breakdown. You are cute. REALLY cute. Pretty/Quirky/Cute to be specific. You will get lots of boys, just relax. You're probably too much one of the guys for your females friends to compliment you (perhaps they are afraid their boyfriend would rather hang with you than go out with them) and as per the guys; you said it yourself:

>I think my school is too small... I go to a professional school... where everyone knows everyone, in every grade.

I guess what I've been saying all along is; Let me know if you're ever 18+, Single, and in NYC! :)

Ok, so, initially, I had a bunch of advice I was going to give, since, as you may or may not know, girls are makeup/hair wizards, but instead, I thought I'd just show you:
http://i.imgur.com/idVkk.jpg

Created using this:
http://www.ivillage.com/virtual-makeover#

You don't need an account, and as their privacy note states, they won't share any pictures with the public unless you create an account/allow them to.

Also, have you thought about joining a running group/club? You have the perfect body type for it and you could meet some new people. If I ever run into you, trust me, I'll say hi and try to be friends. I think it takes a lot of courage to put your picture on the internet and ask people for advice.

If you make changes, do it for you, not for anyone else. Actually, I almost want to edit the hairstyle with that makeover thing again and give you an edgier look that says "hey, I look a little different, and do you know what? I own it, so don't waste your time pitying me, my life is awesome. You'd be lucky to be my friend."

Have you heard of this girl? Perhaps you could try to contact her, more than anyone else here, I think she'd know what you're going through.

Oh, and since you mentioned reading stuff to improve your social skills, I'd recommend starting with this, it really helped me:

That's all I can think of for now, I hope at least some of it was useful!

To be honest, you've got a good head and face-shape for shaving your hair completely. Get it clippered as short as possible, I'm not sure if there's anything shorter than 0.5, because fully bald would be in the realm of shaving, and that's going to result in an awful prickly feeling and maintaining a full shave is much more laborious than just a simple full clippering; I have a friend who looks similar.

Hats definitely work in your favour, because you obviously need to protect your scalp and your appearance and demeanor suits the style as it is, but don't be afraid of not wearing hats while in doors.

I'd definitely recommend to switching to flat-brim hats exclusively, like these: http://imgur.com/a/bd2Zo

For skincare, I generally like using Phisohex (https://www.priceline.com.au/phisohex-anti-bacterial-wash-200-ml) on a recently clippered scalp, mainly at the back, it will reduce redness and prevent foliculitis from having it clippered so short. If you're not Australian, and you're probably not, any sort of anti-bacterial face wash will also help.

For your face, I'd definitely recommend using something like this daily: in the morning or at night, but only once a day: http://www.amazon.com/LOreal-Expert-Energetic-X-Treme-Charcoal/dp/B006SXDA7S

After this, tone your face if you're worried about even skintone, some witchhazel is good for this. It's also great for treating minor knicks and scraps from shaving your face: http://www.amazon.com/Dickinsons-Astringent-Natural-Witch-Hazel/dp/B00016WW8Q/ref=sr_1_2_s_it?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1457657115&sr=1-2&keywords=witchhazel

After toning, if you want to, use a moisturiser, again something from the Loreal Men range, either for anti-aging or for sensitive skin, depending on your goals.

As for the sideburns, if you're going to keep them, you'd need to go for a full beard if you decide to clipper your head, since obviously sideburns can be attached from above or below, but I'd really recommend you clipper the top as short as possible.

You can't tell what you look like because you haven't put any thought into it, apparently, ever. Is pretty something you want? It's ok to answer no. Beauty doesn't have to define you. But if you want it, you'll have to work for it like everybody else.

Diet, watch some makeup tutorials on Youtube, get your hair did, get new glasses, and buy some new clothes - preferably in color. I know it sounds like a lot, but believe me. If you start now, you could have a full dance card a year from now. Even just working on the things you can change immediately (hair, clothes, makeup) will have an enormous effect.

Beauty isn't entirely superficial- at least, the consequences aren't. Attractive people get better jobs with better pay, are judged to be more competent, are judged to be morally better people... the list goes on. It really is a game-changer. I can't explain to you how different, how much easier, it is to be a pretty girl. Everyone takes you more seriously. Everyone wants to be nice to you. People go out of their way for you constantly. It comes with its own set of challenges, but it's quantifiably worth it.

If you have any female friends or relatives, I guarantee at least one of them has been dieing to give you a makeover for years. Let somebody teach you the girl stuff. Also, if you're serious, I can't recommend this book by Bobbi Brown enough. Taught me everything I know.

u/oppositeetisoppo · 0 pointsr/amiugly

Here is a good guide to help chose a new hair style. You’re not hopeless remember taking care of yourself, diet, working out eating right etc. does major changes to your body so it’s always good to try to work towards being your very best. For skin care I wouldn’t say my skin is sensitive but things like proactive really screwed my face up, so I was looking for a cleanser at Walmart when I came across this Nivea men sensitive cleanser. It smells wonderful leaves my skin nice and soft actually their whole line is great. Shower twice a day use your cleanser. Wash your face with exfoliating scrub.three times a week this is the scrub I use there are many from the same brand or other brands but read the skin type and chose what best works for your skin type. Again this is regular grooming stuff but I feel if we are talking about skin care as men we don’t really pay attention to black heads on the nose but believe me it bugs the hell out of girls remove any black heads. Best of luck! You’re ugly right now but things change definitely hit the gym and lean down if you’re looking for a better facial structure definition.

You have great potential, but you're not doing much with it. Some immediate thoughts:

  1. You need some color in your cheeks and lips to warm up your face.

This is a great everyday hit of lip color: http://www.amazon.com/Nivea-Kiss-Cherry-Flavored-Tinted/dp/B001LIHJ6I/ref=pd_sim_bt_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=0REPFZCKNJ79Z7PNVAXH

It's just tinted chapstick, so you don't have to apply it with any special care about lining your lips or filling them in neatly (just swipe it on and rub your lips together like normal chapstick), and the way it wears away looks really natural (it doesn't leave a line around your lips or get on your teeth or anything), so it doesn't have any fuss or upkeep when you are wearing it. Also, the color works on basically everybody.

    This is a really no-brainer blush: http://www.sephora.com/custom-color-blush-P269021

Use it SPARINGLY because a little goes a long way, but it changes colors to match your coloring after you put it on, so you don't have to search for a color that works for you. I know that sounds like bunk, but it actually works (takes about 15 minutes to change after you put it on).

Go to a Sephora and try both colors -- see if you like it. I'd guess the pink would work best for you.

  2. Try a side part instead and some layers. It will give your hair more body at the top of your head -- makes your hair look lush and bouncy.

Jealous you got to go to Japan! Tokyo is a travel goal.

Neogen's Bio-peel exfoliating pads are incredible, and I use them once to twice a week. I just finished my pack of the wine exfoliants, and purchased the green tea one as a replacement. The wine one contains antioxidants and seemed to be more of an anti-aging product, whereas the green tea one appears to be more of a cleanse and tone and neutralize type of effect. Both are great, although I've only used the green tea one twice thus far. The wine one really helped mitigate some acne scars I had on my cheek, and has the highest ratings on Amazon.

I follow the exfoliant with a quick wash (just normal Neutrogena face wash) and tone with Thayer's Rose Water Witch Hazel. It's a non-alcoholic toner that moisturizes while tightening up the pores and cleansing a little extra. Most drugstore toners contain alcohol, which serves the opposite purpose of drying your skin out, and accelerating oil production, thereby creating more acne. You can purchase Thayer's at CVS or most drugstores; there's several other witch hazel alternatives that seem to work fine as well. This one just smells extra nice.

After toning, I slather on some aloe vera gel. The one by Nature Republic is dirt cheap, gets the job done, and the tub lasted me like six months. Aloe Vera is a great moisturizer because it's all natural, contains little to no additives, and isn't oily so it won't clog up your pores. It also feels great on the skin, kind of a cool jelly feeling.

Once that's done, I put a small dab of Skinfood's Royal Honey Propolis Serum. This shit is pricey, but it's magic. This, paired with the Neogen exfoliator, really wiped out the acne scars. It doesn't have a smell, and the consistency is thick and syrupy, so just use a small drop and it goes a long way. Your skin will feel super glowy afterwards.

A few times a week, before bed I'll wrap up the above skincare routine with Etude House's Moistfull Collagen Sleeping Pack. Legit, the morning after wearing this, I won't put on makeup because my skin's so on healthy. If you exfoliate, do the whole aforementioned skincare shebang, and then sleep with this baby on your face, you will be RADIANT. The sleeping pack is a jelly-like cream that you slather over your face in a thin layer. I've had my pack of it for like two months and it's still more than half full. It dries up within about five minutes, and is barely visible. It rinses off easily the next morning, with a little soap and warm water.

Hope this helps!!! I freaking love skincare lmao, if you couldn't tell.
