hi there!

i wanna start off by saying i had not idea what subreddit this was when i read the comments.
Just saw the keywords about the yeti and sound issues and dug deeper.
It could have been from r/youtube or r/twitch for all i knew.
I listened to you clip and it game me asmr tingles!
haha. it was after that i decided to see what sub i was in.

so as an asmr fan, you might just be being critical of yourself.
I've seen a lot of users here and on youtube say they prefer a more natural sound with the room tone included vs the unnatural silence between words.

that being said, i too have a yeti and could possibly offer some insight. chances are you've read or hear this eles where too.

the yeti is stupid sensitive.
when i first got it, i had my headphones and and was listening to things with the gain all way up.
i could hear my girlfriend come home, and put he keys into the door like the thing was on a megaphone.

so having your gain to about halfway is good. i keep mine there where i stream on twitch. if i put it all the way up, youll hear cars drive by and thats too much for me in that instance.

if you do wanna go for the more quite feel, on thing you can try is the "noise reduction" effect in audacity. (your post mentioend a "white noise reduction", but im not sure thats what youre talking about

i use that effect often, and haven't had issues.
so if we are talking about the same effect, you'll have to let me know your process.

on thing you can do with audacity (and other software like OBS studio) is setup a noise gate. this basically means if the sounds aren't within a certain db threshold, it wont come through.
tutorial here.

how you have your yeti placed can make a difference too.
so for example, if it's just sitting on your desk, it might pick up more noise from you interacting with things on the desk (of the desk itself) as opposed to the yeti being attached to one of those mic arms. a wind screen and pop filter could help too.
You might need an adapter to get the yeti to attach the yeti to the arm, so do your homework.

last thing I can think of is your space.
this guy has a good video about making your space nice for cheap.
noise panels help too if youre trying to spend some cash.

hopefully this helps.

I really like REAPER personally. While it's not technically free, the trial never expires. It also comes bundled with a bunch of basic-but-decent plugins that can do things like noise removal.

I have two suggestions regarding microphones - one "traditional" for asmr and the other less so. The "traditional" option is just buy a USB blue yeti mic, it's the simplest option that requires the least know-how.

The more flexible option is to buy a digital audio interface with at-least 2 XLR inputs (like a used scarlett 2i2), two xlr cables, some sort of mic stand, and a pair of cheap pencil condenser mics like the Behringer C-2 kit. The biggest reason I'd consider it better is that it lets you play around with different stereo mic setups, like AB, XY, ORTF, etc, all of which sound different for the purposes of ASMR (i.e. you can mimic some aspects of a binaural setup if you want to). That said, if you're not into learning more about mics and stuff, keeping it simple and enjoyable is likely going to be much better than getting burred in technical issues and lingo you don't care about. You want it to be a fun thing you can do easily, not an over-complicated thing you regret buying.

You're in luck V! There is an A/C Adapter available, Nikon did it kinda weird and didn't include a simple power port on the camera so you need two items. The first is an adapter that looks like your normal battery pack but has a cord off of it and the second is the actual power cord you plug into the wall. Connect those two together and you can record until the next ice age! I've double checked, both of these items are compatible with your model so you're good to go. $62 and free shipping sure beats buying a new camera! :)

Adapter:

Power Cord:

You also might want to throw in a larger SD card to give you more recording time, not sure what you have now but it has to be pretty small to only give you 20mins. This 16GB card should give you close to 4 hours and is only $13:

Just get some earbuds.

I occasionally sleep on my side, and I've found that wearing buds "backwards" (by putting the cord down my back instead of my front) is a bit more comfortable as the wires aren't brushing against my face.

These are super cheap and sound really, really good. I didn't really like how the tips felt but you can swap them out with tips from a lesser sound quality store-bought pair or buy the ones I got that are super comfortable.

As a side note, these earbuds also make a lot of noise when you move around, so if you do that while falling asleep they might not be the best. All around though, I think these are definitely the best bang for your buck, even if you do end up having to buy replacement tips.

I loved the glass/rhinestone noise so much I think I'm going to watch it again tonight!

I'd really like if you can get your hands on the big sheets of them..

Like this! I got some a while back to embelish my Nintendo DS. They were super cheap! Bending the sheet, running hands over it, applying to things would be lovely.

My earliest ASMR memories were from elementary school. There are plenty of videos in this theme, but I haven’t found vids with certain triggers.

The first “missing trigger” from when I was little was when the teacher used a chalkboard liner on the board. The teacher did it slowly, always smooth with none of those horrible “nail on a chalkboard” sounds. I’ve never seen one in an ASMR.

The next thing was the light clacking of the teachers shoes as they walked the room during tests. Very quiet and slow clacks from a pair of low heels. Sometimes I’ll hear that sound, but not necessarily in that context and usually not a focal point.

Weirdly, the last one was the lice lady. Something about the calming voice paired with the feeling of the long qtips on the scalp. I know there are a lot of cranial massage-type things, but I think I’d like to see more... localized style? Like I don’t necessarily want a literal lice check video, but maybe some type of scalp thing that uses more precise tools as triggers (as opposed to brushing and the like). I think I like the spatial aspect.

My headphone jack on my phone died, so I have to use bluetooth. Works out, since I use my phone for near everything. I bought these LG Headphones. They're not too bad for quality, pretty comfortable to wear, and great battery life. I can play sound through it constantly for 8 hours, but if its just a couple of times a day, one charge can last for 3 days.

I've used them over night as well. I'll say this; takes a little while to get used to them, but once you do it's like they're not even there.

Also, my laptop has bluetooth, and sound comes through great on it.

So for recommendations, I Beth Freschi is probably one of my all time favorites. Here's her [amazon page)]

Lisa Guyman is also pretty good, she has a few but this is my favorite)

You can also suggest she try some of the quick samples on amazon or other mediation sites - meditation is hit or miss, and what one person likes isn't the same for everyone (very much like ASMR videos) I don't like 90% of them out there, so it can take a bit to find what you like.

Another trick is to make a routine - I know everyone says that, but it does work. I was so skeptical and I would give up a few days into it because it wasn't working, but if you keep at it, it works. Something like have a cup of herbal tea before bed, brush teeth, get into bed, rub a bit of lavender oil on your face, take a few deep breaths, snuggle under the covers and listen to your meditations.

Thank you very much for your answer, very detailed and informative! I currently have my Yeti set to Stereo mode so according to the manual it came with it should be recording from the front and both sides without capturing much sounds coming from behind (but what do I know.. ) I also made sure to be speaking "at" the microphone and not into the top so I don't think this is a source for my problem.

I am in fact recording in my bedroom and have tried to listen for the littlest of sounds but I can't really hear anything particular. I do have the fan from the laptop I use to record the sounds running while I record so that may be it. I will try to move the laptop further away and lower the gain on my Yeti and see if it removes some of the white noise.

I'm also considering investing in some soundproofing foam for my room but I'd like your opinion on it? Is it actually useful? Would it make a difference?

I would play it safe and not irrigate your ear. It could potentially cause an ear infection. If you need to clean your ears out, I would recomend this. As it has a safety guard to prevent you from going too far into your ear.

Also, remember that earwax is your friend, it prevents infections as well as trapping dust and dirt, so unless its affecting your hearing id leave it in.

Lastly, if you just have to flush your ears, please use 2 cups distilled water with 1 tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide, this ensures that it is sanitary as possible. But I really really would not recommend it.

A ring light wouldn't work for you because it has to mount on a stand, which stands on the ground, and it is quite large. You can do what I do. I also have limited space.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HXTHPXU?psc=1

I purchased this. I think it might work for you in limited space, especially since you said you are close to your cam at your desk. It's VERY bright. It's cheap and can clip onto almost anything. It can also be recharged via usb and has multiple dimming settings. If you are able to be backlit by natural or artificial light like I am, you can use the clip on ring light to light your face pretty well.

Hope this helps!

I use ATH-M50x's with Brainwavz earpads

Literally the most comfortable you can get IMO, I mean it just feels like two pillows on your ears. It's amazing, completely wraps around your ears with more cushion than you could ever need

Here are pics of my headset (dBrand skin + Better earpads)

I use 2 different ear buds (boyfriend's bose/mine cheap) as well as three over-ear headphones (boyfriend's gaming, my gaming headphones, and my good headphones). My good headphones are the best, hands down. If I need to cancel noise I play white noise softly in the background.

I can absolutely recommend the audiobook version of Nelson Mandela's "Long Walk to Freedom" read by Danny Glover. Check out the following Amazon.com page...on the left-hand side of the page, beneath the picture of Nelson Mandela is an audio sample. Great stuff! http://www.amazon.com/Long-Walk-Freedom-Autobiography-Mandela/dp/1586216880

For ear to ear type things you're going to really want 2 separate mics, a normal stereo mic just won't give you really noticeable stereo sound.

Assuming that you're recording on a computer, something like 2 of these would be better in my opinion.

In the future, something like this would be good before stepping up into something more professional.

As far as output equipment: Any decent pair of closed / semi-closed headphones with some isolation, your choice. I'm currently wearing some of the cheapest semi-closed cans I've tried - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002GHIPYI/ .

For mastering very quiet audio, particularly binaural audio if you ever go that route, my understanding is that even the best speakers in a dedicated anechoic room just don't approach headphones.

u/Spurrow · 2 pointsr/asmr

I disagree completely. Ear buds are probably the worst thing for asmr videos. Open back or semi open over the year headphones are the best. If you're someone who listens to a lot of binaural videos there is no better option. The sound stage you get from a good pair of open back over the ear headphones is rivaled by nothing else. You don't get a sound stage with earbuds.

I would recommend these. You won't find a better pair of headphones at that price point. These are audiophile quality headphones at a bargain.
