Hey dude, love the look of these. I currently rock these (currently $90, I bought mine on amazon for $43!) many hours a day and love em, except for a few things which I hope you might be able to answer. They're all related so I won't do a list per se.

They cannot play music & be charged at the same time. One can physically plug in the charger and wear it (somewhat uncomfortably!) but the software doesn't allow it. I spoke to LG and they said that they have no ability to discuss this with their manufacturing team, i.e. "we make them, but we have nothing to do with making them so tough". To let you know they're running low on battery they start beeping, once every... 15 seconds? Which is a pretty reasonable thing but it would be nice to be able to tweak it. So: do you think you'll make the firmware flashable so if you make improvements, early adopters can upgrade?

The other thing is: what are you doing about USB Type C? It'll have launched early 2015 so assumedly new products will start coming out with that format instead. Just something you should probably be thinking about. Because I'm the dullest man alive I even started some discussion about this here.

Finally, since I'm on a roll, earbud comfort. I've found the LGs to be AMAZING for fit, sliding in nicely and forming a great seal for bass. BUT, I'm aware that people's ears are different. Because of the rave reviews I recently bought some Xaomai Piston Mk IIs, which come with 4 earbud tip sizes. But the problem is that the thick noise pipe within the tip, and the shallow pipe with wide headphone body, means that I can't manage to get them to get a deep seal, and attempting to do so means forcing them into my skull. I don't know how constructive this feedback is, but just thought it might be worth you guys picking up a pair of both of these sets and playing around with the differences?

Best of luck with everything, looks like an awesome project.
Oh, and one last thing, I know you said about the battery; for someone who's unlikely to do much recording but likes the form factor and the noise cancelling and the ability to records in 3D occasionally, pretty much my whole usage will be listening to music. Any idea how long you might expect to get out of the battery in that case, vs your current test cases of listening AND recording?

Cheers!

Hey /u/QuestionSleep - Nice work on the sounds for your video! It looks like everyone is giving you a bit of a hard time about the video quality though. So I'm here to help! :)

Here's a couple of super basic things to help you:

  • Light is EVERYTHING! Having lights behind you (like your window) makes any camera have to lower the gain and exposure (fancy words for the way the image sensor takes in information which requires light). The best thing you can do with what you have right now is turn around so all the lights are behind the camera. That way the exposure and gain will come down and your framerate will go up. If you want to really help your videos get a simple table lamp and have it pointing at your face without getting in the shot, super cheap lighting!

  • If you can afford it, a new camera would be great! Decent webcams can be cheaper than you think too! I'm guessing you are American so head over to here for something to put on Santa's list! http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Webcam-Widescreen-Calling-Recording/dp/B006JH8T3S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1416858979&sr=8-1&keywords=logitech+c920

That webcam will film at a good frame rate automatically in 1080p. Problem solved!

Other than that, keep it up! Us ASMRtists have to keep working. Let me know if I can help you any more. And awesome Power Rangers top! :D

I agree with what is said here. I think switching to Mac is a must for any serious audio/visual work. I use iMovie and Final Cut Pro but I think iMovie (free for mac users) is fantastic and still choose to use it over final cut for some projects because of speed and ease of use. I also use logic audio but garageband comes free with mac too and these are both better than audacity.

It is not hard to get a binaural mic setup, you already have a recorder, 2 mics and a dummy head won't set you back much (see my video about it posted here today). The mics I show you in the video are these - http://www.amazon.co.uk/APEX-185-PAIRE-Stereo-stereo/dp/B000S5MW7Q
*edit - I am not sure the Zoom H1 can accommodate 2 active mics, you may need a cheap AI (audio interface) or I suggest the Tascam DR-40 over the Zoom H4N. The industry hates the H4N as it takes ages to turn on and eats batteries.

You will also need to think about upgrading your camera - the iPhone has a variable capture rate over long recordings and this will mean you can't sync sound and video easily. I think this is the problem you are currently having. The best camera option on a budget I found is this http://www.goodluckbuy.com/sj6000-hd-2-0-hd-12mp-dv-outdoor-sport-wifi-camera-170-degree-wide-angle-30m-waterproof.html - basically an original GoPro 1 for a great price. This will fit easily to a dummy head too.

This is the cheapest set up I can think up. Of course, if money is no object, there are better mics/cameras but then there is a lot of choice out there and different pros/cons.

As for a green screen, iMovie can handle the editing work really easily. You just need a cheap green screen (check amazon) or a roll of paper or even a tin of paint. The important thing is you select 'chroma green' (or blue) - I use a roll of paper. It is cheap and versatile. You can get these from photographic or A/V stockists.

I use photoshop to make thumbnails.

With all technical questions, always check out the discussions on https://www.gearslutz.com/board/ for reviews, opinions and answers. They cater for the high end and the entry level too.

I was fortunate enough to take a foundation degree in media studies and I think that the thing most ASMR artists miss at first is that weather it is ASMR or a cooking show, we are in media production. Low budget bedroom production, sure, but still media production. Any courses, learning or information you can gather about this field, from lighting, shot composition, light temperature, to editing techniques or audio treatment will be invaluable.

Hope this helps.

Scott

Pseudoscience fascinates me, not least because of the ASMR, but also the idea that someone could believe this claptrap. I mean, EFT...holy god what boldfaced abominable bullshit that is! But it has still managed to develop a decent following. There are people out there who swear it's helped change their lives. That is amazing to me.

Reading was my first experience of ASMR. Not until youtube did I realize that I could get it by visual stimuli. There's a scene in the Star Trek novel Unification in which Picard gets a haircut. I would read and reread that scene over and over. It got to the point that I knew the scene too well and would anticipate the next sentence, and in my experience, this kills the ASMR. I had to ration my reading.

I also get significant ASMR triggers from reading about massage therapy, which has lead to me building a small library of massage books. This has the added benefit of making me rather knowledgeable in the ways of bodywork. I give pretty awesome massage if I do say so myself. This was the first book that brought the correlation to my attention, and it's a great trigger even today, because it's a first-person description of what it's like to receive certain kinds of massages. I highly recommend it to anyone who triggers from reading.

Wow, thank you so much for the quick reply, Griseus! Your uploads are superb!

> There are ways to solve that though.

Are you rocking this foam windscreen as a solution? It seems to be doing a great job all by itself, from what I can see in your videos. Do you also use a traditional pop filter like this one for an extra layer of filtering or would that be redundant in this case?

> I suggest you put the pc or laptop as far as you can from the mic

Would buying an extension cord of sorts remedy this issue? Or could that introduce mild to moderate distortion?

On a related note, do you use a sound card or preamp for your recordings? Those cost a pretty penny and might just push me into sticking with the best bang for my buck, the Blue Yeti, while I spend the remaining funds on an audio interface if that helps a ton.

Thanks again for your input, and I, too, am psyched to get this project started asap!

u/TheGoreyDetails · 3 pointsr/asmr

hi there!

i wanna start off by saying i had not idea what subreddit this was when i read the comments.
Just saw the keywords about the yeti and sound issues and dug deeper.
It could have been from r/youtube or r/twitch for all i knew.
I listened to you clip and it game me asmr tingles!
haha. it was after that i decided to see what sub i was in.

so as an asmr fan, you might just be being critical of yourself.
I've seen a lot of users here and on youtube say they prefer a more natural sound with the room tone included vs the unnatural silence between words.

that being said, i too have a yeti and could possibly offer some insight. chances are you've read or hear this eles where too.

the yeti is stupid sensitive.
when i first got it, i had my headphones and and was listening to things with the gain all way up.
i could hear my girlfriend come home, and put he keys into the door like the thing was on a megaphone.

so having your gain to about halfway is good. i keep mine there where i stream on twitch. if i put it all the way up, youll hear cars drive by and thats too much for me in that instance.

if you do wanna go for the more quite feel, on thing you can try is the "noise reduction" effect in audacity. (your post mentioend a "white noise reduction", but im not sure thats what youre talking about

i use that effect often, and haven't had issues.
so if we are talking about the same effect, you'll have to let me know your process.

on thing you can do with audacity (and other software like OBS studio) is setup a noise gate. this basically means if the sounds aren't within a certain db threshold, it wont come through.
tutorial here.

how you have your yeti placed can make a difference too.
so for example, if it's just sitting on your desk, it might pick up more noise from you interacting with things on the desk (of the desk itself) as opposed to the yeti being attached to one of those mic arms. a wind screen and pop filter could help too.
You might need an adapter to get the yeti to attach the yeti to the arm, so do your homework.

last thing I can think of is your space.
this guy has a good video about making your space nice for cheap.
noise panels help too if youre trying to spend some cash.

hopefully this helps.

I'm a side sleeper, and I've had great success with these JVC's

Super comfortable, excellent audio quality. They sit pretty much flush with my ear. they've also taken a hell of a beating over the last 8 months and show no signs of wear.

u/zimm3rmann · 1 pointr/asmr

This mic is $38 and sounds really good. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001R76D42?cache=977889b6f18ef3176ad30f7d387b9e6c&dpID=41PnZwr0rWL&dpPl=1&dpPlWS=1&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70&qid=1413528106&ref=plSrch&sr=8-4#ref=mp_s_a_1_4

I'm pretty sure it's what Northern Whisper uses and his audio is very clean. You're not going to get binaural for cheap, but a mono mic like this should work fine for whispering, crinkling, role plays, etc.

u/nsdjoe · 4 pointsr/asmr

These are good for side sleeping, but not wireless.

It's kind of on my to-do list to order a pair of these and test them out for ASMR. The concept is great I'm just not sure how well the actual product works.

Until I try those, however, I alternate between playing the videos out loud with my phone speakers and using Sennheiser CX 150 earbuds. These earbuds work the best for me because they have a small driver and they fit right into my ear. I'm not a fan of laying on my side for the earbuds to drill into my ears throughout the night, though, so I either lay on my back or pull the earbuds out right as I'm about to fall asleep.

My recommendation? Find some earbuds with small (9mm) drivers that have either either rubber or memory foam tips. If you look for earbuds with small, round housing they shouldn't be too uncomfortable because they'll be able to fit right in your ear.

I wouldn't recommend laying on your side with earbuds in no matter what kind you're using, though. Unless you have a really soft pillow that kind of forms around your ear instead of pressing up against it, your ears will more than likely be a little sore when you wake up. If you can get in the habit of pulling your earbuds out right before you fall asleep (unless that doesn't work for you) you'll be able to fall asleep to ASMR without sacrificing comfort.

u/Bheckler · 1 pointr/asmr

If you like listening in bed, I highly recommend SleepPhones. Super comfy, good quality (sadly not the same as earbuds), and non-tangle cord.

If you have loud neighbors / roommates however, these won't be good enough to block that sound because they're not in-ear

u/NBKFrost · 3 pointsr/asmr

Have a look at this it might be just what your looking for. Spring made a video on it and they look really good.

As far as how i listen to ASMR, i just sit at my desk doing my thing but have a playlist that cycles through all my favourite artists. I use these for audio :P

I like to concentrate on a video its self just before i go to bed but i don't listen to it while sleeping as i like to sleep on my side and with headphones that's just not gonna work.

u/yeezy__taught_me · 1 pointr/asmr

Pretty much the most popular mic on this sub is the 3dio but it's not really cheap, something like $300 if I remember correctly. I'd have to do a bit more research to find any binaural mics for less

edit: http://www.amazon.com/TASCAM-DR-05-Portable-Digital-Recorder/dp/B004OU2IQG/ref=sr_1_2?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1427410163&sr=1-2&keywords=binaural+microphone

u/chalks777 · 10 pointsr/asmr

yup. The reason anybody buys this at all is because the ice that it forms is completely clear. The cheap molds always end up cloudy. Also, buying the press is cheaper than buying a month's worth of pre-formed spheres. It also looks cool.

u/kpajamas · 4 pointsr/asmr

I've heard the headband ones are not good; I forget why but the Amazon reviews motivated me to buy this one instead. I found it to be extremely comfortable to wear even while lying on my side because the bud part is almost completely soft, no hard part. The sound quality was good enough for asmr. The downside is that mine stopped working for no reason after a year or so, so it was not that long lasting. I'm okay with that since it's relatively inexpensive and easy to replace.

u/YoseFuiCide · 2 pointsr/asmr

I use these. Super small, they never bother my ears, unless I've been in bed for 14+ hours.

Do you know those head massage things? Get one of those and use it on on them. It works for most people even if they don't experience ASMR.
