If you want to take a certain risk, you can get a cheap copy of windows on r/microsoftsoftwareswap :) hurry up if you do, upgrading to windows 10 is free until the 29th!

Also, I don't see a graphic card in your build, so do you intend to play on the integrated chip from the i3? The integrated HD 530 can do the job for games that don't need a lot of power, but if you plan to game on this desktop I strongly suggest to pick a dedicated card, there are some quite "cheap" (around 200$) that run extremely well a lot of game, even recent ones, at 60 fps ultra high setting 1080p. I picked a r9 380 XFX 2gb last week for 180$ on NCIX and I don't regret it at all!

And I should add that if you plan to play on a TV or something that need HDMI, that mobo only has a DVI-D output, so yeah all in all a graphic card would give you more connectivity options... and more freedom in the games you could play.

Other than that, the MOBO is great, I also bought it last week haha, it's a steal for the price :) I would also suggest picking a single 8gb stick of ram, that way your second slot on the MOBO can still be used in the future to upgrade your system with another 8gb stick. 8gb sticks were 36$ last week on directcanada (crucial).

Your case also come with only 1 fan. I bought this case last week for 30$ and it comes with 2 fan pre-installed, they work great and are quite quiet. https://www.amazon.com/Rosewill-Micro-Tower-Computer-FBM-05/dp/B0116TSWM6 It was pretty easy to setup my first ever build in this case and I recommend it to you if you are on a budget.

Edit: I would also invest 20$ more on a 240 gb SSD just to have more freedom on what I can save or not on it. Keep in mind that a 120gb SSD will be more like a 113-115gb in reality (I bought a 240gb and in reality there is only 222gb on it so yeah... just so you know)

Have a good night!

Hey, great parts list imo. Honestly, there really wasn't anything I could change. With that being said, I went ahead and put together an "alternate" build. Please read my notes before proceeding:

  • CPU: If you'd like, you can order your Ryzen 1600 from Amazon for the same price as from Newegg + Free Shipping (and one day with prime). For whatever reason Amazon's page for the 1600 is glitched and doesnt display the right price. To get the correct price ($265), go to this Amazon page, and then add to cart.
  • RAM: Your choice of RAM is definitely the best value, no doubt. Since I couldn't do anything here, I went and added the next best value. Its slightly quicker, has much better timings, and uses Samsung B-Die (best RAM die on the market).
  • CASES: I see that you wrote that you really like the Air 240! That's great, its an awesome case. Just for some alternatives, I'd suggest taking a look at the Fractal Design Define C ($95 w/ $5 coupon, awesome value) and the brand new Fractal Design Meshify C ($120+$20 S/H, sadly its a bit pricey). There's also the Corsair Carbide which is also very pricey, but I thought I'd throw it in there as it's similar looking to the Air 240.
  • PSU: The Rosewill Photon is a pretty good power supply, certainly no slouch if you get a working one. This series is hit or miss. I'd definitely recommend the EVGA 650W GQ primarily because it is more reliable, but also because it has an additional 100W overhead. The real steal is that it's only about $5 more once you've completed your $20 Mail-in rebate!
  • WIFI: Admittedly my knowledge regarding this category and the following are rather limited. All I know is that the AC1900 is a super well respected wifi card and it's on sale for $72 on Amazon, in your position I'd pick this one up.
  • MOUSE, KEYBOARD, AND HEADPHONES: I threw in a bunch of different alternatives in here since a lot of it is definitely personal preference. The mouse and keyboard you selected would definitely be fantastic, especially if you get the charging pad for your G403. I really like the G502 at its current Amazon price though ($90), and for the keyboards any of them would be fantastic (I'd lean towards the G610). For the headphones I have even less knowledge, but I have the HyperX Cloud and I love it. It's currently on sale for $98 on Amazon.

Here's the pcpartpicker list for those items that I mentioned above, be sure to remove the extra keyboards and mice I threw in for reference. When you do that (and -$20 for the MIR on the Power Supply), this build comes to about $90 more. Like I said before I just wanted to show you some alternatives (what you've selected is already great).

The Gigabyte Z370 Gaming 7 is still available (albeit very low stock from stores) for $280 on MemoryExpress, so better be quick, just write in the special request to have them ship from the store or contact their online sale manager for that request, they've done that before when online stock are out.

Otherwise the ASUS ROG Z370-E is also a good board with all the high end bells and whistles with pretty good power delivery and VRMs. But here's the thing, if you're going to OC, do it now, so many times I've seen people said "I want/plan to OC in the future" but they never end up doing it, they just chose to upgrade when they need the performance boost. So think about it, if you truly don't need to OC, go with a sub $200/$220 board and save a bit of money.

The Dell S2417DG monitor is sitting at an insane price right now for what it offers. I suggest you snatch it right away before it is gone.

Good luck on your build!

So if you have put some thoughts into the OC situation I mentioned earlier, and decided to go with my advice, here are some good sub $220 boards you can go with.

MSI Z370-A Pro ($125 on NewEgg) is a very "all-you-need necessity" entry board, it has everything you need, and still allow for some light OC.

Gigabyte Z370XP SLI ($150 on Amazon) is a good entry board as well with a bit more bells and whistles when it comes to the back IO, although I've heard VRMs on the entry/lower end boards from Gigabyte for the Z370 chipets aren't exactly idea or the best for OC, so take your pick. It does have a good aesthetic appeal to it though.

MSI Z370 Tomahawk ($190 on Amazon). Ah, where do I start with this one? It's basically a go to board if you have no clue where to start. Lots of good recommendation for this one, great all-rounder board, decent OC as well, and it looks great, can't go wrong with this.

MSI Z370 KRAIT ($185 on Amazon). This is a great board, it is comparable to the Tomahawk in terms of bells and whistles, with the notable exception of the onboard audio chipset, this one has a newer, more updated audio chipset.

And last but not least, the big boy ASUS ROG Z370-H ($213 on PC-Canada). This board is basically the baby brother of the Z370-E I mentioned above, but with less power delivery phases, so less head room for OC, but still a good option.

This is the base build you want to work from?

why do you feel you need to upgrade? what are your current limitation and wants?

Sure you have an old build but do you really require anything more at this stage? For 2013 that is an outstanding budget build and something I would stick with today.

I think I have a good idea of where you are coming from/what you need so I will do my best to explain. I'm going to guess here that you are experiencing less than stellar gameplay on new titles and want to play on smoothly on high settings.

Assuming the 960 is a 2GB card; CS:GO and other esports titles will see very minimal difference with any upgrades, reason being that do not require or utilize any of the extra VRAM memory on the GPU. Your core clock and cuda cores are fine, better than my PC so I do not see any reason for complaints here.

When it comes to newer titles like Dark Souls 3 which you mentioned you will need to either turn the settings down or replace your gpu with a 4GB card. That will allow you to turn up the setting and maintain solid framrate, the problem with the newer, bigger games is that they have more in the environment to load.

Your GPU is still great and high valued and you do not need any PC upgrades. However if what I said above holds true I would recommend the following moving forward.

Your CPU and Mobo are fine and not worth replacing, I wouldn't worry about the ram either, 8gb is fine and you don't need anymore than 12. You can add an SSD at anytime but that will just make loading faster, it would just be to install windows and run csgo off of which is not going to be worth it.

If I were you I would sell that oversized power supply to replace with a corsair 450w, and sell the gpu for a 1050ti. EVGA comes highly recommended

I just picked up a Zotac because it was cheaper in my area but for extra $ I would stick with EVGA they have solid manufacturing, and driver support.

So your options for upgrading are pretty limited. Not much has come out in the CPU market until recently so not many people would advise you jump into Ryzen or any of the new stuff now, and your anything else in your build is fine and would costs a lot to upgrade. IF you have a 2GB card your only problem is higher settings on new games

notice your build only consumes 300w~ yet they sold you on a 700w psu. im sure if you research a bit you will find other glaring abnormalities and unnecessary choices in your build like what is your ram speed and how many sticks do you have... if you have one one 8gb you will enjoy throwing in another, twox4gb would be fine to leave

I would call myself a moderate audiophile but I'm also not willing to spend >$200 on headphones. I currently have a pair of kingston hyperx cloud IIs and they are the best headphones by far for the price. Sound great and extremely comfy. They are also currently on sale for $120. A slightly cheaper option is the cloud core at $100, which is the exact same headphone, just without anything extra. The cloud II has a usb control box for volume, mute, and simulated 7.1. They have a new model, the cloud alphas at $142, which I want to buy. Sound better, has better inline controls, and a removable cord.

They will work with anything that has a headphone jack. The mic boom is removable and has a small plug to cover the hole when it's out. As for sound quality, the bass is loud and clear, even at high levels. The mids are a little weak but if you have access to an equalizer you can make the headphones sound all around awesome. Mids sound better on the alphas because of the dual chamber audio. They sound very good on my phone using poweramp's equilizer. I use them basically exactly how it sounds like you plan on using them, except with a bit of metal and rap mixed in.

So my recommendation is alpha if you want the best for under $150, cloud II if you want something cheaper with inline controls on pc, or the core if you don't need any of the extras.

First things first- a Solid State Drive(From now on referred to as SSD) is a storage device with relatively high speeds and lower potential storage capacity for the price, compared to a Hard Disc Drive(Now on referred to as HDD).

You’re generally not going to need an SSD for most games, as the speed of storage isn’t really dependant on your storage. Most data used by programs is loaded into RAM, which is much faster. The only benefits are cases where you may have a game with long loading times because there’s a lot of content to load into the RAM. This is fine though, sometimes it’s nice to have those short loading times for multiplayer games. In actuality, it’s best to have an SSD for operating system storage, so instead of a computer taking a few minutes to start up, it only takes a few seconds.

There are two product types of SSD you can purchase, and two form factors (sizes) you can purchase. If you can update with which case and motherboard you have(and also any other storage that’s coming with the computer, I could have a better idea of what you have to work with, however you’re probably looking for something along the lines of SATA, 2.5” and around 500gb. This is a good option if you have one(or more) HDDs to store pictures, videos, documents, etc.

If you don’t have other storage devices, a 1tb equivalent would be preferable. Alternatively, you could purchase the 500gb SSD and some HDDs to back it up. Or even go a bit further and only purchase a 250gb SSD to hold ONLY your OS and a couple other things.

In terms of price, keep in mind that price for digital storage(SSD) has dropped significantly in the last year, and is forecasted to drop another 10% this year possibly.

TL;DR: Search “500gb SATA 2.5 SSD” online and buy anything from Samsung, Western Digital, Crucial or ADATA.

Hope this helps!

I would recommend intel i7 8700 processor for your build. This will give you better multi-tasking and longevity.

The 3 fans you've selected are good. I have my own preferences:

Kingston 8GB 3000MHz DDR4 CL15 - https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0151PXW9E/?tag=pcp0f-20

u/maybepants · 2 pointsr/bapccanada

https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/QHFRnH

The Deepcool Tesseract has 2 fans, and is a bit cheaper than the Corsair. I've built in it, and it's a solid budget case.

The EVGA - BQ 500W is perfectly fine for your build - it's even a bit overkill if you're not using a dedicated GPU.

I removed the keyboard from your list just because.

Your #1 priority upgrade should be a SSD boot drive. Smallish SSDs which are perfect for Windows boots drives are cheap and plentiful. You can get a 120GB SSD for under $40, or a 240GB drive for $55 or so.

Well, if you want a recommendation, I'd say this one. It's a bit on the pricey side, but it's also extremely good quality, and should last you for quite some time.

But really, anything 550W+ with at least one 8-Pin PCIe power connector should work fine.

You'll have to dig hard for a pre-built with a 1060, but this is the best I found for your budget:

https://www.amazon.ca/CYBERPOWERPC-GXIVR8020A4-Desktop-i5-7400-7200RPM/dp/B0747W15QL/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1519686839&sr=8-1&keywords=cyberpowerpc

It's equivalent to a 3GB/6GB and you might be able to get 60+ FPS on medium-high settings for 1080p gaming (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAM12OI0Sqw).

A used one is $850 CAD.

Is this the one? https://www.amazon.ca/TUF-Gaming-X570-Plus-Motherboard-Lighting/dp/B07SXF8GY3/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=Asus+TUF+GAMING+X570-PLUS&qid=1574970593&sr=8-3 Might switch it out if you think it's the better choice.

I'm biased towards Nvidia as I've always had GPU's from them and I'm only now warming up to AMD's CPUs, but I'll keep it mind. Thank you.
