If you're into Middle Eastern food, Zahav is incredible. I'm biased because I'm in Philly but the restaurant has won James Beard awards for Outstanding Chef and Outstanding Restaurant, and the book has recipes for everything they serve and a lot more.

For a more general book, The Food Lab by J. Kenji Lopez-Alt is pretty great. Most of the recipes are on the Serious Eats website but it's nice to have the physical book.

gotcha, try and grab you one of these https://www.amazon.com/Etekcity-Lasergrip-774-Non-contact-Thermometer/dp/B00837ZGRY. it's an extra expense but it definitely makes all the difference in the world knowing what temp you are dabbing at so it's at optimal temp. are you just heating the nail and then ripping with no time in-between? I don't have much experience with nectar collectors but chances are you are dabbing it too hot. if you really want the best experience get an electric nail for cheap that you can get for like $80 that has a digital read-out of the temp you are dabbing at. sweet spot is anywhere between 500-650.

I don't want to turn the free talk into a yard sale but I won a super nice push cart at a golf outing this summer (longest drive nbd). Definitely never gonna use it. I know there are lots of golfers on here (or buy it for your dad for xmas). $83.99 retail. https://www.amazon.com/CaddyTek-SuperLite-Deluxe-Golf-Push/dp/B00CFGUL2E?th=1

I'll try not to write twenty pages but I usually look up or contact the venue just to double check their rules. Some venues, usually smaller ones, don't even require a pass and you can just bring a camera. In my experience tho the venue relies on the artist for a guest/press list.

I usually contact the artist's manager/tour manager - you can usually find that info on their website, facebook or just google it - and I do this 1-3 weeks out from the show. Also good to mention that if they're not the person to contact, if they could point you in the right direction that's great. Usually people will ignore you but I've accidentally contacted a marketing guy or an old manager that put me in touch with the right guy because of that.

You really don't need to say much. A basic template, and it can be even less, would be like:

> hi my name is eirtep. I am a [city]-based [music journalist/photographer whatever]. I am requesting a basic photo pass to [band's] [date] show at the [venue] in [city]. I've shot a number of shows at this location and I'm familiar with the layout and rules. I do not use a flash or lights and only seek access to the photo pit for photo/video.

> [optional sentence or about other relevant bands shot (related to band asking about or the venue or whatever you have + links to these examples, if possible, that they won't bother to look at]

> More examples of my work can be found at [website that they wont look at]

> [optional sentence asking if anyone would like a copy of the finished work in return for the press pass and proper credit - had a few IG and FB posts from this]

> Please let me know if I am contacting the wrong people.

as for #2, it's highly dependent on your budget. Youtube and subs like /r/videography and /r/filmmaking are helpful to learn. considering I shot my first show on a shitty old Canon T2i I think you'll be ok as long as you don't go too cheap. A fast lens, like f1.8 or ideally f1.4 is more important than the camera since it's probably dark in the venue. Plus lenses (usually) stay with you, I've been through multiple camera bodies but I've kept my lenses. I currently shoot on a Pansonic GH5 which is fairly cheap as far as cameras go. It's more of a video camera than a stills one, but I'm a more video-guy so that's fine for me. The Sony A7sii is a low light beast so I could see that being good.

No one's gonna judge you for your shitty camera, you have the pass so ppl assume you're supposed to be there, because you are.

All that being said you can also just shoot at more low key/local act venues to get a feel for shit and to have "examples." Also, once you should like 1 show you can automatically say you've shot like 4 bands because of the openers and shit. It helps you have a blog to say you're working for. Though maybe it's in my head, but I feel i've had better luck just using the word "photo" pass instead of "press." it's the same thing, but maybe they're worried about a bad review/write up? I dno.

hope that helps a bit.

Carhartt, hands down. Got one for christmas a few years back and I don't even work a manual labor job. Would have to find it on sale, but its both warmest and most comfortable.

Thanks. You still might want to read it just because Diamond's thesis is pretty unique so it's enjoyable to read.

It's quite a controversial book but if you want the opposite perspective of Diamond, Wade's "A Troublesome Inheritance" is among the best: https://www.amazon.com/Troublesome-Inheritance-Genes-Human-History/dp/1594204462. The other obvious contender is Charles Murray's The Bell Curve, though there's basically only chapter that's relevant to this discussion, and unsurprisingly it's the chapter that has gotten him the most praise and the most criticism: https://www.amazon.com/Bell-Curve-Intelligence-Structure-Paperbacks/dp/0684824299

For criticism of Diamond from someone opposed to Wade/Murray, try Wertheim's review in the Nation (it's short): http://www.columbia.edu/~saw2156/HunterBlatherer.pdf in which he argues that even Diamond is too deterministic.

If you listen to Russillos podcast he recommends books about history that he's been reading. The most recent one he mentioned was called Normandy 44, if you are interested in history, particularly military history, it sounds like it would be very interesting.

Asked this in the FT yesterday but wanted others opinions...

Going to Oktoberfest next month, and wants to buy Lederhosen. Don't want to spend a ton of money, but also don't want to get laughed at by the locals ... would something like this work?

on twitter ? The guys who run "chapo trap house" which is a socialist politics podcast. He converses with them a lot on twitter. I've been following him for a while, for a while he made fun of stupid criticisms of Obama , and even wrote a whole goddamn book about it

Obviously he's super smart enough to take all perspectives, but he comes off as pretty liberal, as do Big Cat and Chaps. We don't know his perspective on a ton of economics issues, but he strikes me as a pretty heavy liberal based on following him. Not that it matters

All you need is this and coffee grounds. Much cheaper and very easy to do. Just put the grounds and water in for hours at a time then you’re good.

Got this $20 Calvin Klein wallet from Amazon which I love. Lightweight black leather bifold which supposedly has RFID blocking technology in the lining.

Thinking about buying a used keyboard myself and trying to learn. Are these the books you're talking about? https://www.amazon.com/Suzuki-Piano-School-International-Vol/dp/0739054473/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1539302636&sr=8-1&keywords=suzuki+piano+book+1&dpID=51jf8cG3Q4L&preST=_SY344_BO1,204,203,200_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

Also, do you recommend getting the CD that comes with it or just the book?
