I read a lot about separate amps and DACs but I wanted something portable and cheap and easy. I'd been looking at the the EarStudio ES100 which is $99 but while at the Brooklyn aloft hotel one night after getting tipped at King's Theater, my phone popped up that it was on special for $74.25 and I went ahead with the purchase

I hadn't realized this at the time the ES100 started as a kickstarter to have studio level quality and it exceeded my expectations. My only gripe is that every time I plug it in or unplug it, it turns on and I have to hold down a little button to turn it back off. I miss old fashioned on/off toggle switches

There's an iPhone app where I can EQ it to take advantage of my headphones (lots of BASS)

I still have a wire from my headphones to this little thing and I also have a conversion cable 1/4" to 3.5mm or whatever. Ideally a high quality bluetooth receiver like this would be built into my headphones but I'm guessing that professionals don't take headphones seriously if they come with bluetooth built in

anyway, I highly recommend if to anyone that loves music without any sound limitations

cheers

eargasm earplugs
Tell her to get a pair of these. They are a bit pricier than others but I’ve tried almost every other ear plug and these have the best fit and best sound in my opinion. I started wearing earplugs heavy after almost having hearing trouble from going to so many bass shows at loud clubs, etc. I don’t leave home without these now and they were the best investment for nectar sets that I could possibly find. I made all the homies get pairs and they love them.

I bought an Osprey and I seriously love it. The bladder and mouth piece are great, but the bag itself is the best part. It is pretty breathable and is very very comfortable to wear. 100% recommend.

That is the pack I have

u/Def_Your_Duck · 2 pointsr/bassnectar

I bought a pack for electric Forrest a month ago and was totally pleased. I wanted one so that if I wanted to put my jacket or something in it it would fit but also be light enough to rage all day lord willing. Well this one was perfect, If you synch it up it doesn't cary anything and feels like a much much smaller pack. If you don't synch it up you could probably carry 2 hoodies in it comfortably. Anyways I was super happy with it

People love the Mx40's. I got the Status Audio CB-1's for my gaming headset. If you're looking for an open back, people seem to really love the shp9500. Like i said, those are open back and are light on the bass. Another open back that people love in the price range are the HD 559. I've heard good things about the Massdrop x HiFiMAN HE-350.

Kind of depends on what you're looking for in terms of sound and where you're using them.

E: if you aren't dead set on new, i'd find something more expensive and check out /r/AVexchange. Really good deals and it's a bunch of people with headphone buying additctions. Just buy and sell constantly. I mentioned above, but i paid $350 for what would've cost me about $600 new after mods. I find that headphones is an area where people take care of their stuff because it takes a special kind of person to start dropping hundreds on headphones that aren't beats.

u/ReeferSutherland24 · 3 pointsr/bassnectar

Yeah, but you gotta spend a little to not ruin the sound quality.

These ones are supposed to be the best, according to this reddit thread. I am going to get some before the next show I go to.

Edit: they're $40 so they're not crazy expensive. I'd say it's worth the money to (a) not wreck your ears and (b) still hear that sweet, sweet nectar.

u/assfacefobbs · 5 pointsr/bassnectar

yo IDK who you are but I like to hope that your rig was inspired by what I use?

I've been recording with a zoom H1 on a monopod (pointing forward) for almost 2 years now, for outdoor/windy shows I would suggest getting this windscreen

Also I always have the lo cut filter off because it seems to make some bass sounds (especially drum samples and snares) sound distored as fuck, but it does reduce the bass levels which can be nice because Lo likes to crank that shit. Half of my recordings have been with the Lo Cut on and I don't like that anymore so i always keep it off.

As for the auto filter, yeah, always off. once you get used to recording you'll be able to recognize when the loud sounds/parts come and you can check the feedback to see if it's clipping and adjust accordingly. once you get the hang of it you only need to check on it a few times a set to make sure its all gravy. I don't have it down perfect, and my recordings always come out a little quiet in playback (which would be corrected by running an amplifier between the mic and the recorder which would require a standalone mic and the H1, which is way more gear than I want to mess with).

For me i turn the levels around 17-19 for the beginning of the show, and adjust from there. I like to have the highest "block" hit the 0 at the top only at the loudest parts, and then i turn it down one click, and if that top block at the 0 isnt lighthing up again then i turn it back up 1 (like going from 16 back up to 17). Basically you want that top 0 block lightning up but you want it to be at the lowest possible setting for that block to light up.

I've used an H1 like I said for 2 years, this is how I do it, and I'd love to hear some feedback if you find any better ways. also if you're curious www.tapersection.com has waaaaaay more info than you'd ever need

I like Decibullz. 25 bucks from Amazon for a really high level of protection (says 31dB). They work kind of like a mouthguard, where you put them in hot water and then press them into your ear and leave them there for a few minutes to harden. Mine are super comfortable, I've tried a lot of brands and find myself fucking around with them constantly, where the Decibullz I can put in and they stay in place perfectly.

I have a pair of skullcandy methods I wear at work/ out and about that are actually decent. A lot better than previous ink’d and other cheaper versions they had been making. But not as good as the old titans I had in 2011-14

https://www.amazon.com/Skullcandy-Method-Resistant-Sports-Earbud/dp/B00T2FPYCS

Then I have a pair of AKG K240 over ear headphones that sound amazing af. They are open air so they aren’t ridiculously bassy, but they just have so much room and depth to the sound. Its like a whole new level of experience. Unfortunately they work better with a headphone amp to really make them full powered. So i usually use them at home when I am chilling but its a great experience and worth the extra hassle. The link has an amp with them

These are what I got.. a little heavy but awesome and cheap. Worth it rather than $50+ gloFX ones that are pretty compatible

Ahh, you found my spread! So glad it resonated with another Basshead. This is my last weekend in Savannah, so my best friend and I paid tribute at the art tree. I will post some past art tree photos, so maybe others will keep up the tradition.

Much, much love.

Edit: Here is a link to the flag.

Hells yeah

Seconding the ear plugs, bass is gonna be massive, protect those little fibers! my favorites

If you value your hearing and expect to be coming back to shows like these do yourself a favour ppl!

Fugoo XL. It’s a great, fully waterproof, speaker. The UE Megaboom definitely has a plus side because it can pair with others (fugoo can’t), but the bass is very good on the Fugoo and gets loud enough that I can hear it while strapped on the front of my paddle board with waves splashing and wind blowing. Not sure about the UE Megaboom, but I can also use Siri through the mic on the Fugoo (pick up calls, search for songs, etc). That is very helpful for me, because I’m mainly using it on the water and it helps to keep me from having to take my phone out of the waterproof case. They also offer different ‘jackets’ that change the look and also help with durability.

Edit: I also screwed my first one up (plugged it in while it was still soaking wet - stupid) and was able to send it back and get a new one, with no questions asked.

I recently got the FiiO Fh1. Bass is absolutely insane, but the highs can be a little tinny, still great for a $75 earbud. Mids are great.

haha I like your style, if you need earplugs/are going to go a different route than the lawnmower edition I'd recommend these https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0044DEESS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Also, good ear plugs make the show more enjoyable. You still hear everything clearly, and feel all that wonderful bass, but it doesn't physically hurt.

I use these!

They work really well. I have even gotten a couple friends in my group buy them.

u/iOceanLab · 20 pointsr/bassnectar

Let's go! NYE is incredible! Pro tip: Get earplugs. It's going to be loud. [These High fidelity plugs from Etymotic] (https://www.amazon.com/ETY-Plugs-Fidelity-Earplugs-Standard-Frost/dp/B0015WJQ7A/ref=sr_1_2_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1480658288&sr=8-2&keywords=etymotic&th=1) will still allow you to hear the music perfectly while protecting your hearing from long-term damage.

u/electric__soul · 8 pointsr/bassnectar

Downbeats are another good, inexpensive option. They come with an aluminum keychain case and don't stick out of your ears, which seems to be a love/hate feature. $13.95 on Amazon

u/hclpfan · 4 pointsr/bassnectar

I use these which only cost $10-14 depending on the color you choose. Absolutely recommend them.

Here's a link to some ear plugs I use at every show. keeps the ear drum from rattling. I can hear all pitches and still able to carry conversations with these still in my ears when away from the music. Just thought I'd share

u/bonegatron · 5 pointsr/bassnectar

I have DownBeats and I know they're pretty-well regarded, and perform similarly to several ETY models.

Any worth/sense in switching it up?

u/wishyouwerebeer · 3 pointsr/bassnectar

I've been using these for many years now. Get the large size unless you have baby ears

kind of a bummer tho, I think earasers increased their price http://www.amazon.com/Earasers-M1-S-Musicians-Plugs-Small/dp/B00E2D9FHA I prefer them over the etymotics although I think the etys reduce the sound a bit more
