I have an TPLink Archer C8 and I can highly recommend it. It's an "AC 1750" class router (just the maximum theoretical speeds of the 2.4 and 5GHz added together) so it's not "cutting edge" but it has a decent dual core ARM CPU and a very nice antenna setup.

I use it with a 200 Mb Virgin service (I put the Virgin-provided "super" hub into modem only mode and feed it from that) and it covers the whole house with high quality signal.

I can get excellent 5 GHz coverage indoors with 40 MB/s to and from the server, which is more than 25% over the max speed from the internet.

The 2.4 network is also good enough to give us useful coverage in the garden (which is on the opposite side of the house from where the router is) without crowding from neighbouring wifi.

The other big bonus - it's great value.

Edit: I own this one, but it's out of stock, but there's an updated Archer C9 version here.

You really don't need the AC3200 ones - they're pretty expensive and are beyond what you need in terms of routing performance for a home setup, even with heavy Netflix, Steam, online gaming etc use. The AC1750-class is sort of the sweet spot of really solid performance to price ratio.

/u/The_Messiah is absolutely correct. I studied sociolinguistics is grad school (now my hearing is rubbish so it's no longer a career option). Many, or even most, people think the dictionary is a book which gives the language a guide to 'correct' words or 'correct' grammar or usage. The thinking seems to be that if it isn't in the dictionary but exists in usage, the word somehow isn't 'correct'. And then when the dictionary updates (see the literally kerfuffle), people get all upset that these 'incorrect' words and usages are being let in - as if the Oxford dictionary dictates what words should and should not exist and how words should and shouldn't be used.

I'm sorry to tell you prescriptivists this, but that's not actually what a dictionary does. 'Correct' usage or existence isn't determined by the dictionary. The existence or usage of a word - ANY WORD - is whether it is used, and how it is used. Language evolves all the time. If we use the word 'twerking' to describe that frightening butt grinding dance that Miley Cyrus did at the VMAs while sticking out her alarmingly large tongue, then that's what the word 'twerking' describes. And you know what's awesome about that? We have ONE WORD that perfectly conjures up the same image in your mind that my long explanation did. See how handy language is? Dictionaries cannot ever determine 'correct' usage. How would that work? Would they get every English speaker in Earth to vote? The impractical nature of that is why a dictionary's job is to describe how words are used, not to dictate.

My advice is to relax and stop looking to the dictionary to tell you what's 'correct' and what isn't. Maybe read this Stephen Pinker article. Language is beautifully complex and the fact that we have the ability to make up new words and add to our personal lexicon is mind-blowingly awesome. If you're curious about why linguists don't think English is 'going to the dogs', I really recommend Language Myths and I promise it's not full of linguistic jargon about isoglosses and whatnot. :)

I can only hope that's the case. Would you like me to destroy the rest of the email for you? In the mean time, here is the Russ Abbot tea towel

Edit: The reviews of the tea towel are pretty convincing: > "I love it!!!!! For years Ive searched for the perfect item to compliment my Les Dennis ovengloves and Dustin Gee kitchen roll holder and now Ive found this!!!! Im in light entertainment heaven"

IANADentist, I'm not sure if it applies to all electric toothbrushes, but for ultrasonic brushes like a Philips Sonicare you should gently move the brush back and forth and apply only light pressure instead of manically scrubbing back and forth as you might with a traditional toothbrush. Definitely don't just hold it in place and occasionally change position.

You can use the brush to clean your tongue which will help with bad breath, but I also recommend getting something like this - it's amazing the amount of crud this gets off of your tongue, which is usually the source of the bad smells.

yes sash are most common but you can definitely get a different type for push-out windows. not sure if links below will work but you either get a special one like this:

or you get a standing up one like the one shown in this photo and use a window seal:

Awww, spitting the dummy because you get called out on your whining to strangers on the Internet that Johnny Foreigner can buy his own pointless death cheaper than you? Go & have a fag, it'll stop you being tetchy until your blood/nicotine levels drop again. Interesting retort though- I particularly enjoyed the one lonely punctuation mark in the middle, missing all its mates. Bit like a lone smoker huddled in a windy doorway. As it happens I 'get my kicks' by responding to any false positivity around tobacco use by highlighting the pointlessness of smoking it in the hope that anyone who reads it is inspired to sort their shit out & stop supporting multinational drug dealing gangs whilst simultaneously & selfishly committing slow suicide to the detriment of themselves and everyone close to them. I read lots of books and need no encouragement whatsoever, but thanks anyway. Maybe I can recommend one for you to read? Not only is it really rather good (and short, with hardly any confusing 'long words') but the vast majority of people who read it find it incredibly effective.

Bought this for myself a few months ago and I love it. It's cheap but it looks super sleek and it's as simple as one switch that automatically shuts off with a nice blue indicator light all around the base to say when it's on or off

u/arandombritishguy · 8 pointsr/britishproblems

hahahaha some of those are absolute comedy gold!! thanks man. Link is here for anyone interested - one guy even writes a poem about it!! Also good luck in the African desert, whatever it is you are doing!

That sounds glorious, and I feel like I need to get this book for her. And yeah, I can imagine it'll throw you off-kilter a bit, but they do blend pretty well

Edit: Is it this one? http://www.amazon.co.uk/How-be-British-Collection/dp/0952287013/ref=sr_1_2/280-8945991-2670000?ie=UTF8&qid=1449418516&sr=8-2&keywords=how+to+be+british

DON'T bother with Gumtree. Before they were bought out by eBay, Gumtree were fairly decent but now it's a scammer's haven.

You're best off with Amazon or eBay. Amazon has a 16GB available for £150, a 64GB for £190 and a 128GB for £229. eBay has 16 to 128GB models for £179-£309.

> Easily is simply not true either. Needs to be kept air tight and at a cool, stable temperature.

Yeah you can literally do that by putting a lid over it. This: https://www.amazon.co.uk/KitchenCraft-Vintage-Style-Glass-Butter-Dish-x/dp/B00VLZTG1C is more than acceptable. Even when the surface is quite oxidised it really doesn't affect flavour significantly, and you can just cut the top off if you care.

Relatively expensive, this is very similar but Philips and not as expensive. I've had it for 6 or 7 years and it is very well used as Asian kitchens don't come with hot water as standard (I had a shower water heater put in a couple of years ago) and looks like it will last a lot more. Whilst searching I came across some with what appeared from the photo to be remote controls. Seen more basic ones (less pretty, only 4 settings) in UK for £40-ish.

You need to read Notes From a Small Island by Bill Bryson [1]. It's his impressions of the UK when he first arrived from the states. His observation of how we talk about the roads is spot on:

“If you mention in the pub that you intend to drive from, say, Surrey to Cornwall, a distance that most Americans would happily go to get a taco, your companions will puff their cheeks, look knowingly at each other, and blow out air as if to say, ‘Well, now that’s a bit of a tall order,’” writes Bryson. “‘There’s the Great West steam rally at Little Dribbling this weekend,’ somebody from across the room will add, strolling over to join you because it’s always pleasant to bring bad motoring news. ‘There’ll be 375,000 cars all converging on the Little Chef roundabout at Upton Dupton. We once spent 11 days in a tailback there, and that was just to get out of the car park. No, you want to have left when you were still in your mother’s womb, or preferably while you were spermatozoa, and even then you won’t find a parking space beyond Bodmin.’”

Managed to pick up all 3 original films plus 'A Matter of Loaf and Death' in one DVD boxset for £4.99 the other day. Unbelievable bargain.

edit: not where I got it, but here's the same set on Amazon for £5.75! It has loads of bonus features and commentaries as well.

Best purchase I ever made was a pair of sound isolating earbuds (Designed for use by drummers/musicians I think). They aren't difficult to cart around and don't get your ears sweaty like a big pair of closed back headphones, but are fantastic isolation from everyone else. Put on some comfortable level music and you are in your own little world of happyness.

On the motorbike, trains with loud kids, gym with pounding music... all are so much less irritating now!

These are the ones I use, but I'm sure there are alternative brands
