Glad to see that the old CB2 is still in the game. I've had one myself for about 2 years now and it's still going strong, so it's definitely not obsolete (especially not for 90$). It can get slow sometimes, but hey, every laptop does. There is some creaking because the thing is plastic, and it has some dings and scratches because I didn't baby it, but it's a great collage machine.

OK, back again. Thought I'd start a new thread under your OP.

I took the liberty of looking on Amazon.ca.

Here is a 15" Chromebook that I own and recommend. It's is just a straight up laptop though; no 2-in-1 here. It does have a touchscreen, Android apps and Linux though.

https://www.amazon.ca/Acer-Chromebook-CB515-1HT-C82N-Celeron-Keyboard/dp/B07887NVLM/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=acer+15&qid=1575063084&sr=8-6

There's a used one within your budget, and a brand new one just outside of your budget.

Here's another decent one with a 14" display:

https://www.amazon.ca/Lenovo-Chromebook-MediaTek-Processor-81JW0000US/dp/B07GLV1VC7/ref=sr_1_31?keywords=chromebook%2Bblack%2Bfriday&qid=1575062931&sr=8-31&th=1

Here's another Chromebook I currently own and love:

https://www.amazon.ca/Asus-Chromebook-C213SA-YS02-Touchscreen-Convertible/dp/B06Y31BH12/ref=sr_1_28?keywords=chromebook+black+friday&qid=1575063401&smid=A3DWYIK6Y9EEQB&sr=8-28

(here my review of it too:

https://www.chromechronicle.co.uk/ode-to-my-humble-asus-chromebook-flip-c213/ )

With this Asus c213, you're getting a 2 in 1 device with Android apps and Linux, but it's not the fastest machine in the world with its budget Intel processor. But man, I tell you, I love the thing. Built like a tank, nice to use and runs forever.

__

So there's a few to pick over. Any of them float your boat? If not, there are plenty more fish in the sea. With a max budget of 300, you're going to be looking at a budget end of the scale Chromebook, but I'd much rather have a budget Chromebook than a budget Windows machine 😀

Happy to continue the discussion in any way if it helps.

Mine hasn't failed (thankfully) but I've recently learned of another SSD that might work.

I don't actually have this one and just heard about it in this sub so I would do more research to make sure that it does fit though Amazon has a pretty good return policy. Best of luck.

I have sleeves for my laptops, my Wacom, even for a Thinkpad keyboard and I have various kinds of bags/backpacks. The 13.3-Inch sleeve I use for the keyboard is bigger but can be used with the C302. While I prefer to keep my stuff organized and safe, I realized that it's counterproductive to have a very slim Chromebook and then buy a bulky case or sleeve for transportation. I looked through all the offers on Amazon and other stores and couldn't find a convincing product worth its money. Typical sleeves like the ones I already have make the device twice has thick, special laptop (bag) cases are the same just thicker and less useful (more useless pockets, carrying handles and/or shoulder straps) and then there are the pretentious overpriced felt sleeves. If you are worried about scratches get one of these protectors called "skins" or get crafty and creative yourself. Save the money and additional weight, just get a good bag or backpack from a company that also offers high quality travel, sports or fashion bags and gear instead of random computer bags and other stuff with typical out-of-place looks.

u/yoyodynes · 2 pointsr/chromeos

I can see your point, and I certainly don't expect it to run like a Slate or higher end Chromebook, it is what it is power wise. I like the form factor and size.

This is kind of where I am coming from as far as technology goes.

My last tablet was an LG G-Pad X2 10.1. Octa core, 2GB of ram, LTE, Android 6. I was REALLY happy with that even with it being a little older. I only paid about $100 for it until the kids took it's life. I don't think I'd even be looking at another tablet if I still had it. I can still get another one for $100 or so.

https://www.lg.com/us/tablets/lg-UK750-g-pad-x-2

We also have an HP Chromebook 11 G5 which we got for free through the public library system. This is what got me interested in Chromebooks. It sat around for a few months before I decided to see what it was like and I REALLY liked it. It can run Android apps, it can run Linux apps. It's limited, but it works. Running the full Chrome browser is great.

https://www.amazon.com/HP-Chromebook-11-6-Celeron-X9U02UT/dp/B01HHB8B9Q/

I have to think the Chromebook Tab 10 is more powerful than either of these two machines. If it is, this is why I think it's going to work for me. Maybe I can't run 2 external monitors, maybe 1 and then Chromecast media to the TV or something.

u/koji00 · 7 pointsr/chromeos

I've been using the X2 since the week it was released. At the time I was remaining hopeful about Nocturne and figured that I'd buy the X2 in the meantime and pass it down to the kids once Nocturne was out.

They will have to get by with the R11 I gave them.

No buyer's remorse after all. Everyone's talking about the ridiculous price of the Slate so I will save some keystrokes about that. Instead I'll give my opinion of the X2.

The screen on the X2 looks SHARP to me - don't forget that it's the same panel as the Pixelbook. So even though the Slate bumps it a bit further, I doubt you'd ever notice. Turns out that HP had the right idea regarding keyboard design - I'm using it right now to type this and it makes the X2 actually feels like a regular laptop, with regular, magnetically-attached hinges - plus somehow it is able to detect when you open the lid so it wakes just as a laptop should. Yes the weight is a bit lopsided with the display, but HP purposely made the keyboard on the heavy side to help to counterbalance that. That's a necessary evil and makes the overall laptop heavier than I'd like, but I realize that it works better than Google's wobbly solution. I often type while on the bus (as I'm doing right now), and I can't imagine having to balance a kickstand with my legs. And the Slate's third party solution makes it obvious that you are clumsily propping up a tablet - not so with the X2.

The X2 is able to drive 2 1080p monitors I own in addition to the native screen, or I can drive my 28-inch 4K monitor with the appropriate USB-C dongles (need display port for 4K at 60 fps). When I use it that way, I typically toss the keyboard aside and use my Logitech backlit keyboard and my Apple Magic Mouse. Sometimes I don't bother with the third screen and turn the brightness all the way off so it shuts off and the system only sees the monitor(s).

It's awkward to use it solely as a tablet on it's own. It feels premium, but only just so - The metal lining the side of the tablet feels much cheaper than you'd find on an iPad, and on it's own it feels like it would probably break horribly with even the slightest drop. And using the heavy keyboard as a tent or stand sorta defeats the purpose of using a tablet, IMO. Luckily someone here pointed me to [this leather case] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07F3Q3MZ8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) for the X2 tablet and it completely changed how I use it. Now I often just take the tablet in case with me when I take the bus to work and use it as a consumption device. ChromeOS 70 Beta really helps with that as well. It's awkward to have the case on and the keyboard attached so whenever I want to use it as a laptop I take the tablet out of the case before attaching the keyboard.

I'm not sure if the 4GB of RAM really hurts me, since I lean heavily on the Great Discarder extension so that only one tab is actually taking up CPU and memory. I've been satisfied with the Core M processor so far. Linux apps seem laggy, though - but so far Crostini does not support hardware acceleration so that is likely a factor. My only lament is the 32GB of storage. This really should have been priced at $499 with a 64GB option at $599. IT's nice that the X2 includes an SD card slot (unlike the Slate), but since Android and Linux apps still cannot be installed onto it, it's almost useless at the moment. And since Google doesn't even bother to include SD card slots on their own products, I don't have much hope that they will address this any time soon.

u/burkandcompany · 7 pointsr/chromeos

All three of those apps aren't available for ChromeOs natively (with the slight exception of an unsupported port of VS Code). For what you want, you'll probably be wanting to get a more supported Chromebook to get new features like everything Google is doing with Crostini. You need to be a able to run Linux apps after enabling the beta channel in settings. There are lots of great Chromebooks out there for what you want to do, but in your case I would probably suggest going with Google's Pixelbook. I know its pretty expensive for a Chromebook, but if you're interested in development, it might be worth it to invest in longevity, support, and a premium experience.

u/westdabestdb · 3 pointsr/chromeos

Hello, I am not a Chromebook user but I am very interested in them.

You can definitely go for any Chromebook around $500, they typically have 4gb ram, 32/64gb storage, and intel core m3 processor. If you are willing to pay few hundreds more, there's a discount on Amazon for Google Pixelbook, with i5 processor, 8gb ram and 128gb storage for $846. There's also one good thing about this device, you can install linux applications on it.

If you are not interested in paying that money for Google Pixelbook, you can go with ASUS C302CA-DHM4.

Enjoy it!!

The biggest issue I see with that plan is the docking needs to be something she's comfortable with. Have a good place for her to put it and have it automatically switch so that she can just plug one USB-C cable and close the chromebook and put it away so there's not so much going on in her workspace.

I know you mentioned she is older, does she need backlit keys/larger screen? Or does she prefer having a more mobile laptop when taking it around? This website is a good place to get comparisons by price/size/etc.

For actual hardware I'd probably recommend:

Acer Chromebook 15 - Something large, relatively budget friendly, but mid-range performance. You definitely would get more options going for smaller sizes, and probably without touch-screen.

Something like this dock - This one doesn't have a ton of reviews but it has all the display ports you might want, especially as I'd keep the current monitor unless she needs an upgrade. There are more budget friendly options, but I would probably mount the previous one in a spot where there'd be less chance of it moving/accidentally getting pulled out.

u/SharkFalcon · 2 pointsr/chromeos

I looked at the Samsung Plus/Pro Chromebook but I heard mixed reviews on the keyboard and travel distance between the keys. My currently Asus Tf700 with the keyboard has great travel and I love it, so I'm making a safe assumption that this one is good too.

As for writing on the screen on my current Asus TF700, I've learned to deal with lack of palm rejection. i bought a Meko Stylus on Amazon and it's worked very well so far. The only difficult thing is writing fast as I can't write fast since my wrist is floating. Otherwise, it's not too bad at all.

The Pixelbook does seem to be a price hike. I looked in their subreddit and I haven't seen too many controversial reviews but some have some bugs here and there. If it goes on special Black Friday I may consider the lower tier one as I don't need more than 128GB of storage.

a refurbished 4GB c740 celeron has been my ideal machine and it goes for $150 at amazon (refurbished) when available:

Here's the US Amazon link for Anker PowerPort+ 5.

It's great if you want to charge multiple USB devices at once. I think it's pretty clunky if all you want it for is charging a single device, but it fills the niche of providing a fairly high-power USB-C port at a lower price than other readily available laptop chargers like Apple's and Google's.

The USB PD market isn't really mature enough for there to be a lot of good alternatives for that need yet. A lot of chargers are flawed and poorly designed, a lot of them don't have widespread availability around the world, a lot of them aren't even sold standalone but instead are only bundled with a device.

I use my Chromebook Pixel 2 charger for all my USB-C stuff, but it costs more
at US$60 and it only charges one device at a time. I like the long cable and it works great with my Nexus 5X, XPS 13, and Nintendo Switch.

u/ElRed_ · 1 pointr/chromeos

I'm thinking about buying a Chromebook. Especially after Google I/O where they talking about Android apps being on the system and being able to have notifications show up as well as being able to use your Android screen from the laptop.

So, with all this in mind, I quite like this laptop: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Toshiba-Chromebook-13-3-inch-Celeron-Google/dp/B00HRUSWHY

What do you guys think? Will it have the latest stuff mentioned at I/O? I currently have one laptop for work and pissing about on so if I get a chromebook I can piss about on it, watch videos and browse as well as still be able to have my files with me with the SSD + Google Drive + USB/External HDD.

The Android stuff is really the key thing for me, quite like those features.

I have the option of four Chromebooks I think because the place I am getting it from will essentially give it to me for free. Out of the ones listed, I thought the Toshiba looked best stats wise but yeah, which one would you buy?

Acer C720 2GB RAM version. Couldn't find a link.

DELL 11-5544 CHROMEBOOK 11.6" 4GB RAM version.

u/LaughingMan11 · 2 pointsr/chromeos

DO NOT get the one you linked to. It's only got Type-A ports, it supports Qualcomm Quick Charge, which Chromebooks, because they follow the Type-C spec closely, will never support.

If you use that charger with your Chromebook, you'll likely only charge at 1.5A at 5V, or 7.5W, which is almost assuredly not enough to keep the battery charging while you are using the thing.

Buy USB Type-C and PD compliant chargers.

This one is pretty good, and charges the Asus at the same 45W like its included charger, plus gives you 4 other Type-A ports to charge your other things :

u/cd109876 · 6 pointsr/chromeos

Well, regular usb type-a ports cant deliver more than 5v 2.4a. I think it breaks USB regulations. However, usb-c can do a lot better. You would need a usb-c battery, like this: https://www.amazon.com/Anker-PowerCore-Ultra-High-Capacity-Portable/dp/B014ZO46LK

There aren’t many usb-c banks yet, so you might not be able to find a higher capacity one. The next thing that can provide more than 5v 2.4a that would work that isn't usb-c is just ac power itself, like this. https://www.amazon.com/Portable-Outlet-Battery-Pack-ChargeTech/dp/B0116BX968

Those two types will be your only options. Every other type of USB can't provide more than 2.4 amps. You might be able to find a few with higher capacities, because I didn't really look and just got some examples.

u/Grim-Sleeper · 1 pointr/chromeos

I am a big fan of this Anker's USB-C power supply. Works fine for all my legacy devices and also for my cell phone and Pixelbook.

And the best part is, while it comes with a power cord, you can install an adapter to turn it into a wall charger. I haven't tried yet, but I imagine this also works with European plugs.

I installed an extra long 10ft USB charging cable. That's the beauty of having a device that you can plug arbitrary cables into, rather than being limited by the power supply that came with your device.

u/efiggy · 1 pointr/chromeos

I have a CB3-111 and purchased an AmazonBasics case for around $12. The Chromebook fits snuggly in the case and I have my mouse and charger in there as needed. I'm pretty happy with it!

u/dragonflyzmaximize · 1 pointr/chromeos

There's a ton out there, it's difficult choosing. Someone posted on here recently that they got an R11 for like $130. Maybe try getting a decent one for cheaper to see if you like ChromeOS first? And honestly the R11 would probably handle anything you throw at it. I have a Acer C720 from like 5 years ago with 2gb RAM that still handles everything I do really well, that's the beauty of ChromeOS.

But yeah, I think this is a good first device for people: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Convertible-Chromebook-Touchscreen-Refurbished/dp/B06W57W6CX

4 gigs of RAM, convertable, not full HD but at 11.6 inches you won't notice, touch screen.

>I don't like the bulk of a folio case

I assume this might be on of the folio cases you're referring to, given that there aren't many options for the X2: https://www.amazon.com/Chromebook-LiuShan-Leather-Folding-12-f014dx/dp/B07F3Q3MZ8/ref=pd_sbs_147_6?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B07F3Q3MZ8&pd_rd_r=3010ef63-b884-11e8-87eb-1be919d0e38f&pd_rd_w=rtXBz&pd_rd_wg=aYtfz&pf_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=53dead45-2b3d-4b73-bafb-fe26a7f14aac&pf_rd_r=43SDDMJF0MQ4FB4S4ZFD&pf_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_t=40701&psc=1&refRID=43SDDMJF0MQ4FB4S4ZFD

Back when I was searching for a cover, I wasn't too keen on either the folio cover or the mCover. After going back and forth in my mind trying to decide which one to buy, I ultimately went with the folio cover. Back at that time, the mCover had worse reviews than the folio cover, and neither one had more than five or six reviews. I think the average rating for both items was 3 stars.

My review of the folio cover is the one with all the pictures from "Kindle Customer" dated Dec 8, 2018. After modifying the bottom strap (as explained in the review) and having it installed on my X2 for the past six months, I have gotten so used to it that I never take it off. It might be a bit bulkier than the mCover, but it definitely protects well.

In addition to the folio cover, I bought one of these (13.3 inch size) so I could also carry the charging block and a mouse along with the X2 for extended travel. The X2 will just fit inside the pouch with the folio cover attached. https://www.amazon.com/Lacdo-Shoulder-2012-2015-Chromebook-Notebook/dp/B078S3SDVV/ref=pd_cp_147_2?pd_rd_w=b6byN&pf_rd_p=ef4dc990-a9ca-4945-ae0b-f8d549198ed6&pf_rd_r=6XGPB7X2AP3BB3EVT8VJ&pd_rd_r=1a82a401-8229-11e9-9baa-1f33018cf24e&pd_rd_wg=DzClH&pd_rd_i=B078S3SDVV&psc=1&refRID=6XGPB7X2AP3BB3EVT8VJ

u/RedTopSR20 · 2 pointsr/chromeos

No, I understood you fine.

I do know that when using a USB-A to USB-C cable, the port that you're trying to charge from needs to be USB 3.0, otherwise you're not going to get much output. Probably the problem you're facing right now.

I have a portable battery that would probably work, it's got native USB-C output as well as "fast charge" USB-A ports, which are probably USB 3.0.

I love my portable battery, it's amazing. $65, though.

The OEM charger is 45watts. It will charge on anything less than that but just not as quickly. Right now its charging on 10watts (cell charger).

I was looking into this charger but its pretty pricey and I would have to get a USB C to USB C cable as well.

u/stylez89 · 3 pointsr/chromeos

u/entropy2421 · 1 pointr/chromeos

Personally, it looks a little fragile to me but i am pretty rough with my stuff.

After destroying many budget-priced laptops, here's what i've come to. I use one of these daily and treat it pretty rudely. Works great for me. Also have several of these which i abuse regularly. As far as build and durability go, the later are a little more solid but both are super burly compared to many of the other cheapy laptops i've owned and both seem as tough, maybe even tougher, then the 2000$ thinkpad my work gives me to destroy. Don't even get me started on the macbook they expect me to keep one piece. Had to buy a plastic protective shell to cover the dents and dings the thing picks up.

This is the one I have. I wasn’t aware there was more than one. I’m new to Chromebook. Would you mind linking me to the newest one or providing a model number?

Thanks a lot

Yup! I went with an Amazon merchant, Richmond Warehouses, I think? But check the merchant page, the prices fluctuate all the time. Just look for merchants that have 'International Shipping Rates'. I did the same for a Lumia 920, Polyscience Smoking Gun, and an immersion circulator.

ETA: IF you scroll down to the refurb section on this link
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B009LL9VDG/ref=dp_olp_all_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=all
There are two merchants who are selling between $199-239, both ship internationally. Beta Macs and Richmond Warehouses. I ended up going for the more expensive option because of the higher merchant rating and the more detailed description of the product.

FYI, the product I received has a healthy battery, with a few mild scratches on the lid. I was more disappointed that it didn't include the Chrome sticker :( Otherwise perfect!

I lost the charger for my Samsung Chromebook Pro. I ended up getting a 45w charger from Google during a sale. Works great and haven't had any issues with it.

In another thread a user purchased this one from Nekteck on Amazon.

Just purchased this last week. Highly recommend.

At least one seller lists it as in stock on Amazon, but that might just be a marketing gimmick as Amazon itself lists it as unreleased and the page does not appear in search results.

Kinda hard to really draw without a pressure-sensitive stylus and palm rejection, and the device has to be built for that (an extra layer on the display, I think), so your only option is an ordinary stylus. In that case, either get a really cheap one (I use AmazonBasics' $6 stylus for my phone. Nothing fancy, does the job) or dish out a little more ($15-$25) for an allegedly better experience (but I've never tried, so take my words with a grain of salt, here).

That said, do you never experience a limit? I've asked a friend, and he says his Note 7 also gets limited to a certain amount of layers in Sketchbook, an amount that scales with resolution.

Oh, and I'm retarded, so, by "OG", do you mean the original or the new one?

The amazonbasics 13in sleeve fits relatively well. However, it does have a little bit of wiggle room (~.5 in) near the zipper.

The Anker Powerport+ 5 might have been perfect for you as it has USB-C/PD and regular USB-A, but strangely Amazon doesn't sell it anymore and the product page has been pulled down.

https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Premium-Charger-PowerPort-Delivery/dp/B01D8C6ULO

Perhaps they will be releasing a replacement soon.

u/JimDantin3 · 0 pointsr/chromeos

What devices have you used it with? It can't be fully USB-IF certified because they hacked in QC2.0 and QC3.0.

I would look at this one instead -

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0719KV9PH/ref=psdc_2407761011_t1_B07KYLMQ2N

Note that it is USB-IF certified, which will ensure the best compatibility and protection for your devices. There are other similarly certified devices available.

The entire USB-C charger and cable marketplace is a real mess, with some highly questionable products out there. The only real certification os from USB-IF, which enforces full compliance with the USB-PD specifications.

I got a refurb from Amazon about two months ago, and it is a piece of shit. I got this one:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009LL9VDG/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The way I see it, the Chromebook (for me) has one job: browse the web. Thus far, it's done a pretty abysmal job of it. About 1/3 of the time, the websites that I want to go to will not load. I then have to wait for the Chrome error to pop up saying the page is unavailable. I can then reload and successfully get to the page. This isn't a Wifi issue-- the same pages will load just fine on my work computer, my phone, and my Kindle on the same network. There's something wrong with the Chromebook itself. I would NOT recommend this piece of crap.

The most fun times are when Google won't load for me. GOOGLE. Won't load. On the CHROMEBOOK. The irony. It hurts...

Well... this IS a low-power Type-C charger. Please see my comments to /u/IHaveAMilkshake here:

u/capast · 1 pointr/chromeos

This does 29W over USB-C:
http://www.amazon.com/Anker-Premium-Charger-PowerPort-Delivery/dp/B01D8C6ULO

On a side note, what Chromebook is that with the 47.5W charger? It seems that the Macbook 12 maxes out at 29W.

u/JimDantin · 1 pointr/chromeos

Your Anker charger will not have enough power output.

Think about a different approach -

Get a Chromebook that has a USB-C charger. Then build a travel kit around it. You will need a hub that uses your Chromebook charger as the power source, and includes multiple USB ports that can be used to charge your other devices.

This is one I found
https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Premium-Charger-PowerPort-Delivery/dp/B072K5ZJXF/ref=sr_1_10?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1511790995&sr=1-10&keywords=usb-c+power+delivery+charging

There are probably many other ones available.

Ordered one last night, so hopefully it works out!

So, I did not thoroughly do my research before purchasing the following charger as a spare for my Chromebook Pro
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072K5ZJXF/ref=ask_ql_qh_dp_hza

This charger only gives me the "Low-power Charger connected" notification even though the charger says 60W. There is a review from another purchaser that realized this after the fact, and Anker stated that the CBP required "at least 12V/3.33A input when powering it".

My question: Is there any recommended multi-port USB Charger that will put out the necessary input for the CBP? I'd prefer something trusted such as Anker, but if I have to go to other brands to cut down to carrying 1 charger I will consider it.

I believe there is a specific model of the 20100** with a USB-C port.

https://smile.amazon.com/Anker-PowerCore-Ultra-High-Capacity-VoltageBoost/dp/B014ZO46LK?sa-no-redirect=1

You just plug in the anker end, turn it on, and plug into the device.

Edit: Sorry, I have the 20100 not 2100.

This Powerport is the one I use with my C302. No issues, although I can't tell you if it charges slowly or not because I charge it overnight.

Correction: it isn't this one. I bought this:
USB Type-C, Anker Premium 5-Port 60W USB Wall Charger PowerPort+ 5 USB-C with Power Delivery for Apple MacBook, Nexus 5X / 6P and PowerIQ for iPhone, iPad, Samsung & More
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01D8C6ULO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_nMZVzbFDZSJP6

So, it's the first one mentioned in the thread. Charges at 30W over USB-C.
